i was wondering.. if there is a limit to how old you could be.. if u altered your genetics.. cant you live forever? cells die after they reproduce.. but why do "people" die, is there suddenly a mechanism that goes "okay, thats enough life for every single cell..., lets all now form a circle and decompose! woot!" .. i know this is another stupid question, but im 15 and curious

Can someone please describe a simple (or kindof simple) process for obtaining magnetite in powder or rock, solid, whatever form. Is it true that if I take a magnet and move it around in dark sand from most beaches on the east coast of the U.S., I will have magnetite on the magnet? If so, wouldn't there be other magnetic metals on the magnet, like hematite, etc., and how could I purify this magnetite? Your imput will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

What is the highest(heat) possible temperature? It's interesting that while the lowest possible temp has a value(absolute zero) even though it has never yet been reached. What about the highest or hottest temp possible. The biggest number I've seen is 100Million degrees C, or are there even higher temps?

Hello forum; I am interested in learning more about the universe and science in general on my own time. I read A Brief History Of Time recently and I couldn't grasp for example the importance of spin particles. I went only as far as highschool physics. I am thinking maybe low level college texts. Are there any books you can recomend? Thank you.

This has and still is a very long and old debate and I didn't see that this was covered here(yet), so what do you think(and in hopefully more than a few words): Tyrannosaurus Rex - aka - the Tyrant Lizard King. Predator or Scavenger? If for some reason, you might deem him/her(I like to give things a personality and 'It' simply does not work ) a Scavenger, why, and is he still a "Tyrant Lizard King"? This may be a wild shot as I haven't seen anyone here either contemplating about future professional expansion into Paleontology or is currently studying it. But, what do you think about the rest of the Tyrannasauria's(Family group in which T-Rex belongs)? …

Question for Sayonara or anyone else with lab access. I'm looking for a ballpark figure on how much does it cost your lab to extract, replicate and analyze a short section of DNA(mtDNA really) - not counting the man-hours? I have an idea for a project, but the Uni. deemed it inappropriate or at least not a good enough reason to proceed. I'm trying to see if it may be cheaper/easier to go with this company's services and or why will my Uni not allow me to use it's gear. (Even though a sample of 500 will get extremely expensive with these guys.)

I've heard poor Luis de Broglie's name pronounced more ways than I care to think of. Does anyone know the correct pronunciation? I have always thought that the g is pretty much silent, and the lie part has a "yeh" sound to it. As in : " de Broh-yeh " Also, when I see "Euler" I want to say "you-ler", but I've heard someone say "oiler" before, is this right?

Does anyone know about the conditions and mechanisms that would be involved in the formation and duration of a nuclear winter, of the kind caused by a massive impact? I am not interested in supposition, I am interested in things like: - Relationship between impact force and period taken for dust to fill the atmosphere, - Relationship between impact force and mass of dust/debris lifted, - The mass of dust required to block out all light from the sun, - Any information related to dissipation of the dust, - Information on surface and atmospheric conditions, E.G. how fast does the surface temperature of the planet drop, does convection in the upper atmosphere caus…

I know that long wavelength radio frequencies go through most objects simply because the objects arent longer than the wavelength. But it is saidf that they tend to follow the countour of the earth. Does this mean the same thing or is it something else?..If so why do they do this?... Also why arent eh yused in comkputer network communication??

With regard to Wigner's paradox, that shows how mind can affect matter, how many of you believe that it is in fact mind that creates reality? And that the 'real' world does not actually exists.

My last thread here warrants this one. I find myself in a state with mixed feelings about these two journals. Both are excellent and very reputable, but a dual subscription is not likely(least not in my case or not now), even with a student's discount - especially for a long term subscription(probably permanent). So, I need to subscribe to either one or the other and I need your opinions. Leaving out the political boundaries(Science - USA / Nature - UK), which journal do you think/ feel / know would provide me with what I need, more so, then the other. (Taking into account that both journals cover these things) With my field of study(Physical Anthropol…

We've all seen the slump in the computing sector in the past few years, and yet there are still several sectors whoes IT demands have not been met fully. The best example of which is Life sciences. Although, many research and phramaceutical organisations utilise computing technologies for advanced research managment rather than just word processing and checking e-mails, more organisations are calling for more IT products for the life sciences. Most of the big names, including IBM, SGI and HP and many more, have already started focusing on the Life science sector and see it as a great opportunity for investment. What I find confusing is that Universities haven't pi…

This site is a fairly cool idea. Basically, companies post chemistry and biology problems they have and offer money for people to solve them. The prizes offered are mostly around $5,000 - 50,000, and so the questions aren't easy. Nice to dream about anyway. http://www.innocentive.com/

My brother and I built a spud canoon this past week, but we're having trouble finding a reliable means of igniting the fuel. We're using common aerosol hairspray as the propellent, but we can't seem to find a good way to spark it inside the chamber. We started out using a flint lantern lighter, but that only worked a few times before it was so coated with hairspray and other crap that it wouldn't spark anymore. I just tried using a BBQ lighter, but it only worked one or two times. I'm looking for a CHEAP and RELIABLE way to spark in a low-oxygen environment. Any ideas?

I dunno if anybody had a chance to see the set(let alone buy it), but the idea is very intriguing. However, my question is, since they include sample elements(including the radioactive one/s), what about the gasses? since there's no picture on their site, I guess that I'll look like an empty bottle then, or is there a way to stain these things? http://www.element-collection.com/ and more specifically this is what i'm talking about: http://www.element-collection.com/index2.htm

I just want to clarify this. What is casues deafness? Below are the reasons which I have been told, but, which one is it? I am talking about permanent deafness! 1.Exposure to a loud sound (let's say 20 minutes), not on a frequent basis 2.Exposure to a loud sound (let's say 8 hours), not on a frequent basis 3.Exposure to a loud sound (let's say 20 minutes), on a frequent basis 4.Exposure to a loud sound (let's say 8 hours), on a frequent basis The loud sound is not something like a jet fighter taking off a foot away from you Its like loud music at a disco or somthing! Which one is it? {edit} Could this thread be moved to a biology forum or gen…

When you have two magnets next to each other with opposite poles closest to each other, are you feeling the elctromagnet force, or are you feeling the electrons being transfered from the negative pole to the positive pole? I am trying to understnad what a magnet is on the molecular scale. Thanks.
