this is a modification of this thread:http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5017&highlight=enterprise with modern/theoretical physics, we could create a cruiser with nearly the same capabilities as the Enterprise NX-01(less capable than NCC-1701[insert letter here]). how would it work(please, no startrek technobabble. (ex. heisenburg compensators))? i was thinking that for propulsion, it could modify the higgs field in the back of the ship(in such a way that it would have enough negative pressure to make repulsive gravity) and have some sort of graviton exchange in the front.

The above page is from a book I have from 1945 called "The Wonders of Science." Below the picture it reads: What surprised me so much was not that they had the 4 million years ago completely wrong, but that it was from 1945. Maybe 100 years prior I would have expected such a far off measurement, but this was less 60 years ago. The page got me thinking about what we are taught today in school about science and the natural world; how things are. If 60 years ago they were teaching children that dinosaurs were alive 4 million years ago, what parallels are there today? What are we being taught that is completely and utterly wrong? Of course, we will not know until the…

Hi, I just had a question in my mind, What creates Deja Vu? We we know a couple things. Many have speculated different theories on the subject (e.g, There's a delay in data modelling images from 1 eye to thr next giving a 'Memory' type feeling of what your seeing). But not all of the Daja Vu can really be explained. Michio Kaku even has his own theory here: My hypothesis: The Brains attempt to succesfully make a datamodel of the future (Much like when someone makes a data model of a pants color, and they expect to see that color again when they see the pants) When the brain makes a succesful data model of a image, the Designer (Beholder) typically…

A freind wants me to ask this.... He was told by a freind who works inthe science field that the fifth dimension is created by lightning. Lightning traveling in a straight line would reach the ground in the same time it takes a bolt traveling in the well-know, less than direct routes. If the lightning traveling in a straight line travels at the speed of light, the one not traveling in a straight line would have to exceed the universal speed limit, thus requiring a new "fifth" dimension. I have never heard this but my friend is pretty sure. I am looking for any quick posts that could help us out.

I suppose that modern sciences as the ethology and the game theory and can reduce the number of divorces in our society. The reason for this is that many divorces are caused by the everyday egoism of spouses, and modern sciences (their philosophycal aspect) promote a more critical attitude towards egoism. To illustrate my idea, I suggest reading about the Axelrod's experiment and the game "Evolution of Trust": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Evolution_of_Cooperation https://www.clearerthinking.org/post/evolution-of-trust-game I will give one example to clarify my idea. Let's assume that a husband and wife dec…

I believe that the game theory can be useful for improving relationships in families. Here is a simple analogy: A husband and wife are deciding how to spend their time together. If they both go to watch football, the husband gets two "units of pleasure", the wife one. If they go to the theater, the husband gets one "unit of pleasure", the wife two. If they are inclined to compromise, they can agree to go there and there alternately, then each gets an average of 1.5 units of pleasure. But if the wife is selfish and has more patience, she can make her husband choose either to go only to the theater or not to go anywhere. The husband acceps this and the wife gets 2 units o…

Is there anybody who is interested in discussing the Global Brain idea? I am surprised not to see a discussion here, considering that this is one of the most important developments in the history of mankind. Or maybe there was a discussion here already and I missed it? See this: http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/SUPORGLI.html A Russian billionaire has just given 5 million to a university, in order to set up the first academic Global Brain Institute. Do you agree with this idea?

Do you seriously mean that Science isn't about trying to get to the bottom of things. It's only about explaining the phenomena, by making "models". And these "models" needn't be logical They can even be in blatant defiance of logic The "models" don't have to be considered as "true" or "false". As long as the "models" are "accurate" - ie they work out mathematically - that's all that matters? This disastrous line of reasoning was unfortunately followed by the Ancient Greeks. They famously called it "saving the phenomena". Which is probably why they didn't progress very far in Science.

Has anyone considered how much of what is usually regarded as science fiction or godlike powers, is a fact or a possibility at our current level of development. Let me take some examples: - Precognition, prophecy, the ability to foresee the future, is often regarded as unachievable but in fact it is the purpose of all science. Without precognition (essentially, nothing more than the knowledge of causal relation) human civilization could not exist since it is required for the simplest tasks such as agriculture. The history of humanity is the history of the expansion of precognition. There is the classic example of the Victorian Englishmen who travel to Darkest Africa a…

For lack of a better suited forum (and not wishing to couch this discussion in religious terms only) I posted this here instead. I have just read this very interesting discussion about dating systems. http://studentsfriend.com/feed/topic11.html For myself, if we are to abandon the traditional designations of Before Christ and Anno Domini, then I would favour the use of the same letters (BC and AD) to mean Before Commong Dating and After Common Dating, perhaps going so far as to use BCD and ACD. Failing that, the use of + and - dates seems overall to be a simple and elegant solution, but perhaps only as a form of shorthand. What's your take?

ok so we`ve had the Battery/LED challenge, now for something to REALLY get you all thinking! the challenge is to make your own Lightbulb, it must be a Filament type bulb and use no more than 12 volts! the current (amperage) is entirely up to you it must involve no electronics other than the power supply unit of 12v, and can be whatever weight you want it to be (theres no restriction of weight in this challenge). HOWEVER!!!! (here`s the hard part), it must be bright enough for you to read a book in a totaly dark room! the winner is the one who`s bulb lasts the longest! so stopwatches at the ready, and Good Luck to you ALL! ) send pictures in here where p…

due to popular demand and emails about where to obtain this or that chemical from, I present you all with an Idea the next time your in Wallmart or a pharmacy or gardening center or ANY place that sells things (OTC) Over The Counter, that may be of some use. let us know what it is and where personaly I can`t walk into any store and see a new product and NOT at least have a look to see what`s in it I can`t say "keep the lame stuff out of here" as not every one knows whats maybe good or lame, but use your own discretion and lets see if we can`t come up all that you`de need for a reasonable Lab, made from OTC stuff good luck and happy hunting

In my zealous fanatical attempt to undersand science/knowledge it would have to be observable and analytical science. I am also leaning toward analytical philosophy. Any help with this opinion would be greatfully appreciated. pljames

It first seems to me pretty chaotic. Flowers before winter and after the winter again flowers but other forms. The seasons seem pretty intricately formed. I do not know how the science of this is named. Ideally there will be a book so that I can connect the existent formations with a perhaps subjective screen.

I would like to see some responses on this topic....it seems most people assume their thoughts and emotions and don't know that they can actually change them on command once they learn it is possible. But some people are not capable of this. Do you understand what awareness and direction of thought is? Would be interesting to see what you think it is....without Googling it. Thanks A wise man seeks wisdom....a fool thinks he knows enough

I think this comes under the subject cognitive science but I guess it falls into neuroscience and philosophy as well... As I understand it, the Libet experiments seemed to show that people begin to do things before they have decided to do them. These experiments and others since have been debated hotly in terms of what they mean for free will. In essence, evidence for the brain initiating a voluntary movement of the hand before the conscious decision to do so rests with neurological tests that show that preparation for the movement ('Readiness Potential') is registered several tenths of a second before the conscious decision is made. Libet himself claimed that the…

Will science ever come to and end? or will it continue infinately? By definition, we cannot know about what we do not know about! Science might eventually dwindle as all the "low hanging apples" currently accessable to humans run out. This is not to say that humans will have discovered all natural phenomena, simply that it may be increasingly difficult for them to make additional discoveries. Alternatively, there may be unexpected new discoveries, or ways of understanding natural phenomena, that may greatly expand the abilitity of humans to discover new things. By 1900, most scientists believed that almost all scientific principles had already been discovere…

The word philosophy also disturbs me. We all seem to be searching for somthing, the list is long. Can anyone give me a few names meaning science. For example "the love of wisdom" the two words are "love and wisdom" which one word describes science and has many names as does science. curiousone

This morning I woke up wondering: Where does the force come from that splits trees in two and can 'blow' poeple away. -about the tree: The tree is an conductor and the gas of water creates the pressure that causes the damage. But why nicely split up, shouldn't the whole tree have equal damage? (current spread over the full diameter of the trunk) maybe some electromagnetical forces? -about the body: (not necessary lightning) The muscles of the body are triggered and you are actually throwing yourself away? and some help from wind due to the heated air? any more thoughts?

I am trying desperately to try and figure out anti-gravity as I'm sure many of you are so we're trying to figure out ways to spin Mercury because we've heard all about the Nazi Bell and mercury and it's mysterious properties. Sew-in short because I have little experience with this I will be doing everything I can to search the forums and starting this discussion of course to find out as much information as I can I do have a theory and a design but any information on this would be helpful. For instance does mercury need to be made into a ferrofluid in order to be rotated sufficiently the generator magnetic field. I have an idea using a sphere with a certain placement neody…
