Crew members of space shuttle Atlantis flew to NASA's Kennedy Space Center on Sept. 5, 2008 to check out the payload carriers, new science instruments and tools they'll be using to repair the Hubble Space Telescope and enhance its ability and functionality. This hands-on preflight exercise is called a crew familiarization, or Payload Crew Equipment Interface Test. Check it out.

Hello, I teach 6ht grade science in a small southeastern Illinois community. My students wanted me to post a question and see what kind of responses we could get. In our science class we cover such topics as cells, atoms, physical and chemical properties, simple machines, and the scientific method. They were wondering is this is typical of all 6th grade science. If not, what kind on topics do you cover in your 6th grade science classes? They would be happy to get as many responses as possible. Thanks

Has anyone ever come across any studies as to the impact the 6-sided die's introduction had on preexisting games and/or cultures? Became curious after looking into Senet with its uneven probability distribution(throwing sticks).

  13. An investigation of the effects of the blade camber_direction and the pitch_angle on the performance of the vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) by using Gurney flaps shows the inward Gurney_flap is superior at a pitch angle of less than 10 degrees, while the outward Gurney flap is effective at a pitch angle of more than 10 degrees. I get bored easily. Any way I can extract gasses from the air or extract sizeable quantities of metal from ordinary sources? As far as I know, you can pass a magnet over fortified breakfast cereal and collect some fine grains of iron. It's not enough though.

I was thinking.. (very little) and just wondered if the earth and its magnetic poles could be used to make an electric generator.. like, something that never needs to be charged.. that just generates electricity =/

The reason there's color is because of different wavelengths of light, right? Does that mean if there's no light at all, then things are actually colorless? Like if a there's a red box in a room with no windows, and you turn the lights off, then does that mean the red box isn't really red anymore? Or is it still red?

  17. Started by Athena,

I am wanting the details for constructing "Su Sung's clock tower". Ideally the details would be good enough for me to reconstruct the tower. This was a mechanism for measuring time, using dripping water, but also had an observation tower and model of the heavens. Of course such a creation would involve knowledge of math, so whatever is known of the math used at the time would be appreciated. Is there a relationship between Su Sung's clock tower and the Mayan calander, other than a shared interest in the moverments of heaven? I have read, the Chinese I Ching fits perfectly in the middle of the Mayan matrix, and can be used for showing the location of 52 ene…

Those readers who routinely read research journals for their studies or work will be aware of the sub-text that is sometimes present. Such sub-text may subtly question current paradigms, or be a veiled attack on other researchers, or hint at deeper implications of the research, or place caveats on the findings of the paper. Perhaps the most famous example is Darwin’s single line in On the Origin of Species: “Much light will be thrown on the origin of man and his history.” That is not so much a tangled bank, as the seeds of a tangled web whose tendrils still extend today towards the light. What started me on this line of thought was stumbling on this brill…

answering a question in the "pre-echo" thread, I came upon an interesting idea/invention, allow me to try it out on ya`ll have you ever been driving down a Motorway/highway/Autoban an encountered those rumble strips, like mini speed bumps that vibrate the hell out of your car? well applying the same principal as used in the grooves of a record, these strips could be lain in such a way so as to not only just vibrate, but give an audible/vocal message as well! the closer the strips the higher the pitch and furter appart the lower the pitch and so on. a "STAY AWAKE" or "Sharp bend approaching" etc.. message could be embeded into these bumps, a bit like a bar cod…

I thought these lonely forums could use some traffic. In Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History resides the largest, best-preserved T-Rex skeleton ever found., named Sue. The restoration was done just off the main lobby so that visitors could see, which was kind of cool (I was there). When I went back in Nov. 2001, she was standing up at full height on exhibit. Check it out: http://www.fmnh.org/sue/default.htm Tom

(2) Absolute Time : Measured from extrapolated start of the Big Bang event. (3) Relative time : Measured from an arbitrary occurrence. (4) Units of Time : Defined arbitrarily, per Universe spatial locations and circumstances. DH

  25. I was wondering if any of you guys knew of any books that focus on the best ways to teach children about critical thinking, the scientific method, etc. Not books that focus on teaching specific things, or forcing your child to learn or memorize, but just a general kind for the best approaches to basically equipping a young child (4-5 years old) with the kind of mindset that will allow him to think, develop ideas and hypotheses, investigate things, etc. I already do things like this with my nephew, so he can have a good foundation in critical thinking, but I didn't know if maybe there were other ways I can try, or games or experiments I could do to show him these thing…
