I am a student who is studying at one of US community colleges who wants to go to UC-Berkely. I heard you got to pass certain levels or math to do that, right? I only passed Trigonometry, but I am thinking about using other courses to make up my superiority, is that working? i mean I hate math, but I am good at other aspects--biology, and English. Can I get into Berkely with only Trigonometry passed as C and other courses with A++?

I know this is more of a sociological question, but has fear of knowledge or of the knowledgable been a constant in the world or is it getting worse? As we collectively accumulate more and more knowledge it becomes increasingly apparent that in order to 'survive' and prosper in the economically geared western world, one needs to specialise, to a level that to me, seems illogical and unnatural. The good old days of being a 'Jack of all trades' seems to hold little value in todays world and people who are knowledgable in more than one field are often greeted with skepticism rather than heralded as an asset. Is this seemingly increasing trend going to impact on our abil…

High school can be slow. Completely, utterly, dreadfully, mind-numbingly slow - and as a freshman, I've got firsthand experience in this matter. Some teachers are better than others, but even then the quality of the class depends on funding, time, the brilliance/idiocy of fellow students, and a whole slew of other issues. So: what are some of the better online resources for learning the basics (and/or more) outside of school? Uber Spiffy experiment sites, eTexts, organizations - any good resources are welcome.

This thread is here to vent teacher frustration, to make complaints about teachers, or against school in general. If you think the topic is large enough and has enough appeal, you might make another thread. My Frustration- Being forcefed liberal crap. I am sick and tired of teachers trying to force their values(and political ideologies) on students. I find it disgusting and a gross misuse of public resources. I don't think I should get points deducted because I don't agree with the teacher's philosophy. If teaching people a political ideology and a particular person's values is something supported by the American people, and thus public resources should be…

Wow. One of my drunk neighbors just came down, knocked on my door, decided to hang out for awhile, then proceeded to tell me I wasn't "smart enough" to help out with the biomedical side of computing. Needless to say, I ripped him a new one, and told him to stop telling people that they are not "smart enough" to attempt to advance the state of the human condition. What the? Has anyone else here been attacked by people that claim to know the inner workings of everyone else's mind? I couldn't believe it. After knowing me for 5 minutes, he seemed to know how far I could possibly go with my interest in science. Mind boggling. I promptly kicked him out. …

I live in Canada and I am in highschool. My problem is that my math teacher is biased. I include every single details in a math fair journal yet I get 7/10. My friend was exactly the same and got 9 except it had... "I learnd that in math proposals, the choice in project is more important than the people who you work with." This isn't the first time; she does this all the time. I got frustrated after she simply told me to go back to my sit. And when she wrote, "simplify" on the board, I said, "the word is expand," she kicked me out of the class. I am having a meeting with all the biased teachers who scratch each others back. This is an impossible mee…

I've been so far gotten pissed off at every single teacher at my high school. Why? Because they mostly almost always follow a textbook approach towards teaching. This usually involves dishing out tons of overhead notes, homework and more importantly they are teaching facts, not ideas. For example, my Biology teacher was voted one of the best teachers in the state, yet I have an insane animosity towards him. For one, I can never ever have an intellectual debate with him, for example when I asked him about the possible divergence of telomerase into reverse transcriptase, he simply just gave me the cold shoulder and said "OK. Hm... can't say i know much about that…
