Hi everyone , Ive come to the forum looking for some encouragement from all my fellow scientists. Im a university Microbiology honours student that has been having a few troubles with her project. Every time i try to do an experiment, it fails and i have to do it again and again to get it to work. I tend to make allot of stupid mistakes and ask allot of stupid questions and at the moment i feel like a real idiot . Im really afraid that i wont get my project done in time for me to write my thesis as i am hoping to get a 1st class honours so that i can apply for a PhD scholarship. I was just looking for some words of encouragement and/or advice to help me get throu…

i have never read kuhn, so i probably should do, but i am hoping my questions can be answered in this forum, if not would you please direct me to where i could get it answered. here goes: my questions are these. 1. in kuhn's theory of paradigms, what does he mean by paradigms? in his theory are the paradigms meant to be an observation of how scientific theories have been accepted in the past, or are they meant as an applied philosophy, to which science should be subjected, for future theories to survive? what does he man by dogma, and how is this related to his theory of paradigms

Hi im in my early 20's. I left my liberal arts college a while ago and now im planning on returning to study physics or astronomy. I have traveled and lived in many places all over the world. I don't have a lot of money so i need to find a good school in the 6000 dollar range. I've been thinking about the university of cape town because it seems to have a good program and the exchange rates make it fairly cheap. I also like the idea of experiencing the world in yet another way. Does anyone know if it would be more difficult to apply to a good US grad school with a degree from a south African school?

I am a senior in high school, and I have a gigantic interest in everything associated with biology. There really is nothing that interests me more than the study of life. However, I really am not that knowledgeable on the subject. Compared to other biology students, I probably have no more than basic knowledge. This is where my worry comes in....Is it really the choice for me in college? I am trying my best to learn more, and I have started taking an AP course this year. But everything about me seems to contradict with my interests. Despite the interest, my brain doesn't seem to be able to think like a "science" student, which is very depressing. I have taken various care…

So I am starting my 3rd year of college, but I am only going part time, as I work full time. I am 20 years old. I have struggled long and hard about what I want to get my degree in, "what I want to be when I grow up," etc. I have always been interested in the health care profession (my mom was a paramedic), and I am currently getting my EMT. From here I need some help with where to go. I have thought strongly about becoming a PA, but I need some help with what will be the best way? 1. Should I finish my EMT, and work as such while I get a BA/BS in something else, (currently I am a family studies major). more/higher education 2. Or should I continue with my EM…

I have been struggling with a major choice for years now. I love physics with a passion and orriginally wanted to make that my major focus. I got through calc I, II, and III, dif.e.q., and general physics, but each successive semester Im becoming even more disinterested and overwhelmed with the math. (I got a B in calc, C in calc 2, D in calc 3..) Still I love the physics. So I found geophysics and seismology-volcanism and I can really picture myself in that career. Problem arises because I would like to go for my masters in geophysics so I can eventually teach at highschool or college level. Would this qualifiy me for teaching physics? Or would I be stuck in g…

Among the great ironies of our culture is that science, a fundamentally open-ended and exploratory activity, is frequently taught so much as a body of "facts" that many students become estranged from science, and most are deprived of an opportunity to have experiences which strengthen and reinforce their own inclination to experiment, question, and explore ... both the world outside and themselves. Materials presented here are aimed at finding ways to make science education, and education in general, more exploratory, and more fun. ------------------- MADELYN

I'm posting this thread in the hopes that the word will spread faster on my ideas on how to help us become more green in the fight on global warming. firstly global warming is upon us whether you would believe it or not. One of my ideas would be to harness the power of the sea to produce electricity. Would this be feasable? If the ocean's natural high-low tides can be used to fill a large pool and simply drain back out into the ocean safely. the ocean has enormous potential. how about if we can use the ocean to fill a large cylinder that could push a vehicle inside a tube that spans an entire continent. perhaps even use that same energy to vacuum th…

Hey! New member here, and I need some advice and/or encouragement. I've had a passion for a certain branch of science since I was three and half or so, and I've always wanted to pursue it as a career. In some ways, things have worked out well. I became an expert (not a real expert, but you get my meaning) in the field at a young age. By the time I was thirteen I was enjoying the primary literature and trying to write a book. However, school has not been my strong point for a couple of reasons. For one, I found it intolerably boring and irrelevent to my specific interests. Another thing, I suffered from adult-onset ADD (or I guess they call ADD ADHD-PI now) untreated u…

I'm a junior in undergrad, considering applying to PhD programs next year in Microbiology and/or Immunology. There are two Biochem courses at my undergrad, the "easier" one-term class, and the "harder" 3 term sequence. I'd like to take the 3 term sequence to gain a deeper understanding of the area, but here are the prereqs: Quantitative Analysis (1 term) Calculus-Based Physics (3 terms) Physical Chemistry for the Biosciences (2 terms) Organic Chemistry (3 terms) As a Molecular/Microbiology major, I don't know if I can fit all of them in. I know I'm taking the Ochem sequence, but out of QA, physics, and Pchem, which would you say is the LEAST essential for do…

I'm out at my girlfriends parents house relaxing for the weekend. It's a quiet farm outside the city and is really nice and peacful. While flipping through the channels this morning, I stumbed across a channel I don't get at my house called "Link." On it, they were showing a film called, "Nobelity." I decided to leave it on when I saw Steven Weinberg speaking, as he's someone whose voice I've learned to trust through the years. It's amazing. Very well done, and eye opening. Here is the trailer: I searched for the full film online, but did not find it. The closest I could find was this (where each Laureates discussion is available and…

Hi everyone, nice to find a forum like this. I hope it is alright to ask for help on these boards because I really need it! I'm a university student in Australia completing an Arts degree, but I'm looking to move into either a pure science degree (after I graduate) or shift to a dual science/arts degree very soon. Now, this is hard to explain without going on for 3 pages but I've done science at uni before and been 'floored' by it. I was forced into doing it, I hated the uni I was at/areas I was studying and I had no grounding in physics, math or chem from highschool so I failed a lot of it and left. The thing is, now that I've been doing other things for a lo…

I've taken one term of Algebra based Physics, and have considered starting over with the calculus based sequence. However, I've heard you barely use any calculus in the first term (classical mechanics), so would it be just as effective to start in on the calculus physics 2nd term? I'm wanting to switch for a couple reasons: a) Have a better background/knowledge of "real" physics b) Have better credentials for applying to graduate schools c) Calc Physics is a pre-req for Biochemistry (see other thread I made) Any advice is much appreciated.

Hey it's Jules, I am a secondary science school science teacher and love making my classes exciting and interesting. Boring, mundane teachers quite upset me as I believe it imerative students learn to love all aspects of science. Has anyone got any good ideas for group or co-operative learning activities relating to chemistry - eg bonding, cations, anions, acids and bases - pretty basic stuff (ideas other than the usal lab experiemnts would be hugely appreciated). Cheers, Jules

Synthetic inorganic pigments are mineral compounds created through chemical manufacturing rather than by grinding and washing clays or minerals taken directly from the earth. The techniques for producing these substances on an industrial scale were developed after 1800, making them the first modern synthetic pigments of importance to artists. Nearly all synthetic inorganic pigments were discovered or identified in the grand European flowering of inorganic chemistry that occurred in the century after 1750, when European industries sponsored intensive mineralogical and metallurgical research, and early chemists isolated and identified many new metallic elements — cadmium…

Just wondering if anyone knew of any good online degrees that I could get in Canada? Accredited and recognized by any future employers of course. Something nice in biology or computer science/programming would be great, or bioinformatics or something.

Hey there, I have a BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology and am preparing for the GRE and GRE BMCB but am interested in obtaining a PhD in Australia. I am hoping someone on the boards here can help with some infromation. 1 Do you have to have a master's before being accepting into a PhD program? 2 As an international student are there stipends set up like there is over here for the biological sciences? 3 Are there any grants by the US gov that apply to this sort of application. I can't think of anything else at the moment but any other information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
