  1. I have a crystalline organometallic material that is mostly non-polar (cobalt carbonyl). I have been trying to find a suitable solvent for it. So far I used Hexane which reached a solubility of ~10 mg of solute per mL, and Methanol which had a slightly lower solubility. I am aiming to get the solubility up to about 25 mg of solute per mL. Any suggestions for possible solvents or mixture of solvents will be appreciated.
  2. I disagree. You will find that in industry often an engineer or scientist works on projects relating to areas outside of his/her expertise. In that situation, the engineer/scientist utilizes intuition developed during studies to learn about this new field. The learning process becomes much easier when the engineer works in a group of differing knowledge and skill since each member can contribute insight to the overall understanding of the group. Interdisciplinary teams are the best for performing complex projects requiring wide range of knowledge and experience.
  3. What are some good solvents for cobalt carbonyl (at least in theory)? Would Methanol work? or maybe hexane?
  4. That is exactly the answer I was hoping to hear. Thank you very much! By the way, do you know if the oxygen from CO is likely to get free and form cobalt oxide, without oxygen in the environment.
  5. I have an organometallic substance made from cobalt and carbonyls. What are some possible decomposition products when the substance is irradiated with a lot of energy (photons or electrons)?
