Let's say I find a science article that is written in a foreign language. How do I go about getting it translated to a decent amount? I found one recently that involved the metabolism of puffer fish in relation to TTX. I am not adept in the language it was written in, so I could not read it. I am assuming there would be difficulties with using a simple online translator. Perhaps there would be jargon that would not easily translate, and perhaps key details would not be brought out from such an electronic translator. Furthermore, I'm assuming that even a native in the language might not be able to bring out all of the details, unless he or she has a general bac…

Hi, I thought that people in this forum (especially the ones with kids) might be interested to hear about Camp Quest UK. Camp Quest UK are Britain's premier religion-free science and philosophy camp for kids. Our volunteers are dedicated to providing a “godless alternative” for atheists, agnostics and anyone who is bringing up their children in a non-religious household. We want our campers to have a fun, challenging and inspiring time at summer camp, in the company of their peers; without the need for an allegiance to a particular tradition or ideology. Camp A – Kilve Court, Somerset The first camp will be held from Monday 26th July to Friday 31st July 201…

Hey guys I need some help with science fair. I know how to do it but I need this for the conclusions and data. Do liquids with lower viscosity freeze faster than those with a higher one? P.S like why does this happen.

Been searching for the proper place to submit this post, seems to be in this section. Soz if not. So 2010 has come along, with it implications for my future, i.e. which discipline i'm to follow in post grad. Desperately in need of some advice. I've been accepted for mathematics, physics and statistics post grad courses at my uni. Problem is, ideally i'd like to pursue mathematics (number theory, modern algebras, that sort of thing) but i'm not sure if i'd be able to get a job within an industry with these disciplines. Seems as if (in my country, South Africa, at least) companies favour a financial based mathematics qualification, in which i suppose i'm competent e…

i've got my genetics master degree, but i really don't want to follow the Phd in this subject, for the reasons that, for myself actually i'm not very interested in it, Second, based on the many surveys that the salary of Phd of biology is ranked as one of the lowest in a variety of subjects, further more after the graduation there would be several years of post-doctoral life waiting for you. some of my friends told me that if you don't like it, change as soon as possible, it's better to change when it gets too late, and i do want have a Phd degree, but i'm confused about what to continue. So my question is that can i switch to some other subjects? how about switch to…

Hi, I am an Electronics and Communication Engineer. However now I am planning to pursue a higher education in Physics (rather it would be great if inter-disciplinary opportunities exist with Biology- not mentioning BioPhysics alone here, but like major in Physics with minor in Biology). I have excellent grades at the university but I finished my Bachelors in Engineering around 8 years ago. I have studied advanced topics in Physics like relativity and quantum mechanics on my own from textbooks. So I have good background in Physics & required mathematics. Now I wish to get some advice on the best schools I can look out for.. My countries of choice are US, UK &a…

Hi all, I would like to get my 6 1/2 year daughter a microscope. She loves science and nature and I want to nurture the same love of science in her that I had at that age. Given all the info available on the Internet I am of course over analyzing the whole concept of getting a microscope for a little kid however many of the brands sold as kid's scopes are junk that fall apart based on customer reviews.. When I was six (early 60's) I had a plastic Skil Craft that kept me going for years A few years later I got a much nicer TASCO. I have been looking 3 AMSCOPES: Model M200 40 -400 x fine tuning builit in lighting Model M200A up to 640 x Model M130C-LED up to 100x L…

I apologize for the very similar thread to the one below me, but after explanation they are rather different. If one were to look at my post history, they'd find my own threads to be rather repetitive, but I need to post this. I am a freshman biology major at a state university. Since I was young, I had always been interested in biology. That's my issue though: Always been interested in biology. In high school, I disliked math, chemistry and never took physics. I took AP Biology last year and it was the best thing I ever did. I proved to myself that I did in fact enjoy biology, studied my ass off, and wound up getting a 5 on the exam. My attention never shifted during…

Hello. I have spent two years at a public university in a biology program. At first I was BS, then changed to BA. Now, I don't know what I want to do anymore. I feel disillusioned with biology and the sciences now. I have decided to take a year off before returning to university next year to complete my bachelors (maybe in another field). This year I am taking some community college courses before I return next fall. I was thinking that maybe I should change my major or try for another career? Everytime I try to get advice, people come up with this weird mystical mumbo-jumbo (do what you want to do, never give up, is money the only thing to consider in life, etc.)…

Ok, for my Science in society coursework we he have been asked to read a book on science. This could be fiction or non-fiction. The book i am currently reading is called: "Beggars in Spain" by Nancy Kress (fiction). In this book it goes over the story of a group of children called "Sleepless". The Sleepless whilst in the womb were genetically modified to have the ability to not need any form of sleep. The book goes into the children having higher intelligence than ordinary children and most adults. This book has made me want to know more about this kind of genetic testing. So i want to ask you all: What would your opinion be on having your chi…

Okay, I don't really know where to go so I'm just going to give the lowdown. I'm just a guy who's interested in science. I'm only in high school. I'm only in grade 10. Seems so young compared to the rest of the forum... but I don't see how it should be a damper on my interest in science. I have a few questions. 1) How do I know I have any sort of talent/ability for science/mathematics? I mean I've gotten good marks in high school so far (general science: 95ish, Math, 90ish) but I mean I doubt those are good indicators. It's more a matter of working hard than having any innate ability. Whatever I do I like to challenge myself, achieve something that would be difficult …

During 2001/2 a file for ARCHITECTURE, SCIENCE AND HEALTH was opened in my study as part of my independent scholarship as a retired teacher. The material in that file was collected, for the most part, after my retirement from teaching and full-time work in the years 1999 to 2002. I have never had files for these subjects before although, in the 1980s, while writing articles on various Baha'i buildings, I did open a file on architecture(31/8/’03). In 2008 I opened a separate file on science and its many sub-disciplines in the physical and biological sciences. My life story, life narrative, life experience with these disciplines goes back, as far as I can remember, t…

Hi, I am really looking into some input from you. I am trying to figure out the best way to reach my goals. I want to be involved in the environmental field, and probably working on the negotiations side (international level agreements, etc). It is just because, I know it is something I will enjoy and do well (I have a feeling about it!). The problem is I have merely no background in the field. I am a graduate from the technical university (telecommunications) with 2.5 years of expereince in software qa. To be able to do what I want, I believe, I will need a PhD from a respected school (Berkeley probably the best choice here). But with my background it will be i…

I did a lab and my results showed some inconsistencies. My concentration of 100 units/ml of catalase in H2O2 gave me a slower rated than the 80units/ml. I performed many tests so I don't understand where it could have gone wrong. Any ideas. The 100 units/ml concentration was obtained using 20mls of yeast and the 80 was obtained using 12mls of yeast with 3ml of distilled water. Any hypotheses?

I need some help finding a great magazine to subscribe to. I think a magazine geared towards biotechnology would be the most helpful, but biology in general would be fine. I also have interests in physics, so suggestions in that direction would be fine as well. I know there are lots of great science magazines to subscribe to, and I'll pick up an issue here and there of Scientific American or Discover, and others. But I was more wondering if there is ones that have less fluff pieces and are more like unofficial science journals. More like how the Economist is pretty much a journal in magazine form, but still looking for one that is geared towards science in gene…

As an Engineering major, physics courses aren't really a focus for me, though I wish they were. I know a lot of what is considered "classical physics" as that is obviously very important in engineering. But I don't know what "time dilation" is, or what "self-consisting solutions" are, or what the heck String Theory is even talking about. Could anyone recommend a good introductory book on these matters? I have looked online for some material, but it all seems to require a degree in Physics just to look at it. Anything on the level of "educated laymen" would be preferable. I'm thinking of a style like that of Michio Kaku, whose "Physics of the Impossible" book was …
