I'm sorry for my english, I'm working on solving this problem My knowledge level in physics is about zero. There are a lot of books, what to choose? There are a lot of formulas in school course ( I count about 600 ), should I know them all and remember very well? And how to remember them? May be you will ask, why I want to learn physics? In the future, I would like to work with soldering-iron, printed circuit boards, I want to know how to fix broken electrical appliances etc. On the other hand I want to write any very simple 2D games by using knowledge of classical mechanics. Also, I would like to get acquainted with more complex things, like quantum mechanics e…

I'm applying for the Molecular and Cellular Biology concentration at my university. We had to write two essays. The first was our career goals (this one) and the second was what we hope to get out of the honors concentration. The essays had a 250 word limit and the person in charge of the program said to make it interesting, instead of the usual "I want to go to medical school. I want to be a doctor", etc. Please read mine over and tell me what you think. --- In 250 words or less, please describe your future career goals. Ever since the first day the words 'I want to study biology'escaped from my mouth, I've gotten pointed question asking why not'engineeri…

  3. Hi and thanks for reading my thread. I'm a 14 year old student in Wales, UK. I am currently doing my GCSEs and am interested in maths, chemistry and physics. I'm really looking to expand my knowledge on the subjects as I find school pretty easy and boring. I was really hoping someone would have some good sources they could suggest to me. Thanks alot!

I'd like to learn about this, but the wiki page is incomprehensible to me. From my understanding, this explains how energy can exert a gravitational pull (along with a lot of other factors). Can someone explain how that works to me? I'm currently learning AS physics so I don't have much of an understanding of any complex ideas... keeping that in mind please don't overcomplicate it, or introduce any theories I won't understand without explanation. Thanks in advance!

I graduated with my BS in Biology about 5 years ago and have been working an Environmental Health position that's a nice blend of environmental science and engineering/planning. It has been a good resume builder, but I am now looking to advance my career and am looking at grad school. In terms of programs I don't know which would benefit me more. I am looking at a MS in Natural Resources and Env. Science or an MBA with a concentration in Sustainability and Environmental Compliance. I was thinking that the MBA could open some doors still keep me in the science realm of things. The MS would keep me much more based in science, but will take me a little longer and I'm …

  7. In my university (for the biology program), I keep noticing the general trend that there are many more female research assistants in the labs than male research assistants. I've read that there is about a 1:1 ratio for male:female Ph.D graduates in US biology programs. But when I look around, I keep seeing a large number of female research assistants. I've been around these labs plenty of times before, too. The situation is often like this: A professor who has more than two research assistants has more women than men. Most of the time, it would appear to be a 4:1 female:male ratio. I know it's not significant, but what if you see it around in the various labs …

SPM(O-level equivalent) has 9 subject, archieving 8A+ and above guaranteed a place of scholarship by government where A+ > 89% for every subject. k, I'm trying to archieve good result so that I can get scholarship to continue my studies for A-level(which considered to be expensive here) rather than going for STPM(A-level equivalent) with less than 10% cost, but "General Paper" is compulsory in exam, I hate being forced to learn anymore, enough at SPM already(5 subject compulsory) but on my current condition now, time is very demanding, (should not waste my time anymore T_T) so, yeah, need learning source other than Khan Academy , that effective to learn chem…

I need it for subjects math, physics and electrical engineering. On my university calculators aren't allowed on some exams, and on some are there is no restriction for specific model of calculator ... I am currently 1st year , and i'd like to be able to use this calculator for quite some time. So what are your experiences and opinions ?

here's my situation: I want/need to learn more about modern physics. Until recently I was planning on studying this in college. My parents, however, that this is a stupid ambition...stupid enough for them not to fund my education in that feild. I am, however, allowed to study biology and chemistry, since then i'll have the potential to make money in pharmaceuticals. I'm happy enough to do that, but I still want an education in physics. I love thinking about, and the fundemental nature of the subject appeals to me. My only option, therefor, is to teach myself. so can anyone who's been in my situation recommend any books/online courses for me? my education in…

Let’s have a game. For this trick, secretly write 73 on a piece of paper, fold it up, and give to an unsuspecting friend. Now have your friend select a four-digit number whatever (say, 3125) and enter it twice into a calculator. (31253125) Announce that the number is divisible by 137 and have him verify it on his calculator. Next, announce that he can now divide by his original four-digit number. After he has done so, dramatically command him to look at your prediction on the paper. It will match his calculator display: 73! Want to know the simple math behind this "TRICK"?

I would like to know if any of you have ever been there, your opinions about the center and the quality of the program. I'm also applying to join the PhD program at the Neuroscience Center of Zurich. I'm checking everything a I can (like publications, lines of investigation an so on), but I would like to know how it is doing the programs and living in those cities. I would appreciate if any of you could help me with this. I'm finding so hard to make a choice... and I wa…

So I'm attempting to see if I can do some volunteering in lab. I have a degree already and some research experience. Someone said visit them in person but another says they'll get annoyed if you don't email them first and find out if its okay. Different things annoy different people but I assume that overall its safer to email first. The problem is I email profs and I get no response over and over again. Yeah they're busy, but when I was still in the research scene that was never an excuse for me and I'd get raked over the coals for even appearing to take to long to reply, plus the professors back then got back to me. I sent to the account of a student friend an…

I am interested in a career in drug design and drug develoment, so i am wondering whether the pharmaceuticals or chemistry department is the best choice. Some tell me that pharmaceutical chemisty courses are necessary from this early stage.Others insist, that most of the scientists working in the particular field are organic chemists and not pharmaceutical chemists.Every information or opinion whould help.Thank you for your time.

I am looking around for graduate programs to plan my Master's / PhD. My interest is space research, and I'm still getting my bearings in it. I'm thinking exoplanetary research is really interesting, but so is radio astronomy and/or instrument design. What I noticed, however, is that schools offer two types of degrees in general: Astronomy and Astrophysics. It seems to me that astrophysics is "categorized" under "Physics" while astronomy is its own category. When I asked some professors about the difference, it struck me that the answer depends on their orientation. Physicists tended to lower the value of the astronomy degree(s) and astronomers told me the differe…

  19. So basically I have my undergraduate degree in math and I have the option to spend another two years getting a masters degree at the same school in computational science (also through the math dept.). I would probably make my interdisciplinary emphasis physics so it would be like a math modeling / computational physics masters degree. Does anyone think this is a wise or unwise decision? I have done some extensive searching online and basically every job post in modeling and comp. sci requires a phd and they all seem to be connected to universities, can someone enlighten me on my likely prospects with this type of degree, as of right now it seems like a pretty bad idea …

Now that the application process is almost finished for graduate programs, I thought it would be a nice idea to have a place to share advice and tips about graduate programs (regardless of the application itself.) There are quite a lot of people in this forum with graduate-degrees in the sciences -- how was grad school for you? Do you have any tips or advice for new students going through the process? What would you recommend a student would consider when picking a program in case they received multiple affirmative responses to their application? Let's share our experience!

  21. I am currently a chemistry major in my junior year. I have a 3.95 overall GPA (one B freshman year) and a 4.0 in chemistry. I have been doing undergrad research since the beginning of my sophomore year. Last summer I did an REU (if you don't know, it is a 10 week long research program for undergrads). Hopefully I will be doing another REU or internship this coming summer. I have already taken one graduate level chemistry class and got an A. I have my name in one published paper so far (not first author). I feel like I am doing everything that I can possibly do to bolster my chances for getting into a great PhD program, but part of my is really worried that it isn't…

So now I am in my senior year in high school and I have pretty good grades (I can make it in both majors), but I am not quite sure of what to major in... I have 2 things in mind right now: pharmacy and biomedical engineering People who actually told my pharmacy is a good major for later on, were actually from an older generation (50-60 yrs old). the ones who thought engineering in general (not necessarily biomedical) were in their 20s-30s. That's why i've come here to ask your opinion, the opinion of people who majored in one of those areas, and your thoughts about each one, as well as the working fields. I would prefer to know about the situation on a …
