  1. Hi ,which textbook would you recommend to someone who wants to self educate himself with the basics of o-chem?(i have my first course of o-chem this october ,but i want to learn the theory in advance , on my own! ) So any recommendations could help me (Anything but the mcmurry's textbook ,cause that one is used in my class ,so i want something different) Thanks! Also some recommendations for analytical chem would be nice!

  2. I'm reading through a couple analytical chemistry books. They look awfully similar to first-year chemistry books. I don't understand where the difference is. Supposedly, analytical chemistry can be like a third-year university course, but somehow the book material is the same as a first-year chemistry course. Is there something I'm not understanding here? Because it looks like nothing new is really learned.

  5. I'm 33 and have always wanted to study Biology. Back in 2004, I was enrolled in a Biology degree program back in the UK (Where I'm from originally), but had to drop out due to some family issues. Life, up until now, has prevented me from getting back into the sciences. I have a wonderful wife and daughter that have given me their blessings to pursue this. So far I've got the following sorted: - I need to complete my GED (now living in the US) because I didn't technically complete high school. - Have sent emails to the program heads of the courses I'm interested in (Biology BS courses) - Been reading a whole load of journals and magazines to make sure I'm…

  6. The SET awards are held each year in london ,and i noticed that >95% of the winners are from uk universities. Why is that? In the entry section , they clearly say that students from all over europe can participate. So there are two possibilities.Either there is bias against non uk students or most of the participants are actually from the uk(which means that the competition is not well known in other Eu countries). I sent an email to the organization about this but they did not reply, so iam asking you for your opinion

For a couple of years I have had my mind set on what exactly my plan is for college, I am a senior in high school. I want to go to college for Nano Systems Engineering. Should I do just that, or enter a interdisciplinary field and get a Minore or later masters in NanoTech based field?

  9. The reason I have created this topic is because I was recently recruited for this program that allows you to attend college early, more specifically, three years early. I am very interested in a wide-range of scientifc topics to pursue for a career from cosmology to philosophy, however, the more I think about it, the more I realize I might be way out of my league. Eventhough I am passionate about different sciences, I am not entirely sure that I am intelligent enough in this field to seek a career in it. I don't want to wake up one day and realize that I didn't try to achieve my dream career because i was intimidated, but I also don't want to invest time in something that…

Hi all, Ive a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering. I happened to take it because I did not take education seriously that time. After taking engg, I realised that I'm not good at maths or physics. I now have an interest in studying further. I find Biology very interesting and am very good at it. Could you please tell me if I can take up any post graduate course in pure biology after an undergraduation in chem. E? Thanks. -Namita.

  12. Hi all! Pretty much what the question says ^. I'm studying for a MSc in a genetic subject, primarily with model organisms like in developmental biology. I was wondering whether I would still be considered competitively for a PhD in, say, an immunology type PhD? Or whether I am sure to be brushed aside by applicants with an Immunology MSc? Thanks, Big Tom

Our education must make big reform. The aim of reform must be to make geniuses. For me everybody has a talent and potential to be genius but the problem is how to find it.The problem is that pupil can not make proper decision what to learn in higher education. The problem is that good knowledge in nature science do not mean that the pupil will be good if the pupil learn nature science in higher education.Contrary i think that he can make big achievement in humanitarian science even the pupil have no idea of them.Having no idea of humanitarian science will make pupil more critical to what teachers will teach him.I say that pupil make wrong decisions learning what they think…

It is not a secret that the teaching of scientific lessons at schools is at a very low level. In my country, we're really advanced in mathematics, but in physics, we're hardly scientifically litterate; most of the students nowadays don't even know the Earth completes a revolution around itself every 24 hours or that we belong in the milky way galaxy. Actually, I'm not even sure the students know what a galaxy is. From what I've heard from my friends from other countries, things are the same everywhere. Students learn the foil method in their senior year, astronomy doesn't even exist in schools and experiments is an unknown word. Being scientifically litterate is …

  15. Hello everyone, In 2003 I received my A+ Certification and worked as a computer technician for a couple of years. I loved it, but for reasons I don't want to talk about, I've been away from the Computer World and have plans to get a BS in either Business Administration with concentration in Information Systems or a BS in Computer Science. I'm not very confident about the programming part, but maybe it will grow on me as I go. I am at a point where I need to choose a path to take. But my main question is, even though I've been superficially aware of where technology today is, and tried to learn a thing here and there about it with personal use, I feel that I have f…

  16. I am a college student planning on double-majoring in computer science and philosophy. At the school I am planning on attending, the philosophy major has enough electives to allow for a second major, and there's a B.A. program for computer science (school website claims job prospects for this program are similar to job prospects for B.S. program) that allows for a second major. It seems like a good idea to me, but when I tell people, they look at me like I'm an idiot and don't say anything. I don't think those people realize that I've actually thought about it quite a bit. But MAYBE I'm just an idiot. Help me out, here. Here are my reasons: I'm interested in bot…

  17. Hello, I'm currently taking a multivariable calculus course. While my professor is quite good at what he does, I find the textbook I'm currently using to be too easy. I just took the first of three exams yesterday and found myself overwhelmed with the difficulty considering that I've never had any difficulty solving the problems in the textbook. So in short, I'm looking for either difficult problems somewhere on the Internet or recommendations to a textbook that has them. I am not looking to 'learn' from the book exactly, as I feel that I understand the material somewhat well. Simply put, I ask for suggestions of anywhere that has good problems to do without…

I have recently been employed as a science technician since I finished sixth form. I know very little, such as making up solutions and gases, and knowing what most of the equipment is that the teachers want! I dont like feeling hopeless in a job, and I have a lot of fun when I actually find something I can do! The other science technician isnt much good at teaching me all this stuff and I dont think he should be expected to, so I dont want to be having to tell other staff members that I need help! Does anyone have any knowledge in this proffession that they are able to teach me anything or give me any advice? Thanks!!!

Hi, we just got done covering "reaction kinetics" and equilibrium but when I tried talking to my physics teacher about when matter starts from a non-equilibrium state in an isolated system, it spontaneously moves towards its own state of equilibrium, he didn't feel the need to tell me. I asked him about reactions always finding equilibrium except for the universe. Because I remember my chemistry teacher telling us the universe is the only isolated system technically. When I tried to ask him why we spend time calculating equilibrium when the only true example of an isolated system isn't in equilibrium? How can the laws of the universe hold everything in equilibrium except …

I have such a passion for this subject but i cant pass the exams. I am in the UK but i really dont know what to do. I did my double award GCSE exams last mount and i am constantly thinking about how i did if i will get a B to get onto the A-level course. Hey there all! I'm sure you get a lot of these topics however at the current moment I don't have the time to search through pages to find them so just throwing this up. Lately I've taken an increasing interest in Physics and was wondering if there's any recommended starting points to learn as a base before moving onto a more specific field, perhaps some good books explaining the fundamentals? I would have started this a few years ago (I'm currently studying an undergrad in ethical hacking) but I allowed good opportunities to pass me by, something I regret, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

Hi guys I'm new to this forum and wanted a bit of help on a project I have started. I'm very passionate about every field of science, but I find Astrophysics particularly fascinating. After nearly a year of watching inspiring YouTubers, such as Vsauce, SciShow, MinutePhysics, etc, I've decided to make a YouTube channel dedicated to Astrophysics. I personally don't have a lot of experience in making videos, however, I have had experience in presenting and educating. I have done many presentations at college, mainly about topics like Space Travel, Colonization of Mars, etc. I thoroughly enjoy sharing knowledge and want to help educate the general public. So I'…
