I've recently been awarded a 1-year scholarship in an independent UK school. When asked, I opted for IB curriculum - though I might not attend this curriculum as the number places offered is limited. I would like to know anything about this programme especially the general impression and experience of teachers and/or students involved in this. Thanks

I'm studying at a Canadian University in my second year undergraduate studies. I have gotten myself into a position where there is almost no way out without consequence in regards to my academic record. Last semester, I ended up with a 3.6/4.0 which I was extremely proud of considering the general belief at my university that second year is the hardest year for science students. I was hoping to improve for this semester as I am aiming for pharmacy and/or med school (I have an extensive extracurricular profile to support my future application!). Anyways, I'm currently taking this introductory cell biology course, which is causing me SO MUCH grief. I honestly believe t…

In the top right corner of the forum screen, there is a drop-down menu that tells the number of post that quoted you since your last visit. Once you click it, the number resets to zero. Why isn't it like an inbox where it only resets the number to reflect the number of unread posts on the list? Wouldn't that make it easier to reply to all your replies without necessarily doing it all at once?

Today, I was once again reminded that most people don't actually know all the required information to have a driver's license. This time, it was because a motorist almost ran me off the road and then honked at me like I was a jerk. Ran you off the road; what were you doing riding your bike in the road? Good(actually bad, since you're supposed to know this to get a license) question! Most states require adult cyclists to operate bicycles using what is called vehicular cycling. That basically means you drive your bicycle exactly like you would a car: drive on the correct side of the street, obey all traffic signs/lights, use proper signaling, use a headlight at nig…

  14. Hi Folks, Newbie here, sitting in sunny South Africa. As usual, whenever I try to write something, I get hung up on getting started. I have a tendency to bog myself down with unnecessary trivia, or "deeper and deeper research" - good old Procrastination 101. So, who can comment here to give me a kick-start to beak my deadlock. What's the correct or accepted scientific term or language to use when putting forward a What if ? question. My approach will be: What if : ( a speculation / hypothesis / conjecture ) I state or pose a fundamental question about space. ( One I have pondered, deliberated/teased and tortured myself with for over 15 years.…

Just wondering, what are people's favorite writing implements? Do you prefer pen or pencil, or perhaps prefer to type? Certainly some are better than others, do you have a preference for one type or or even a particular model? I do quite a bit of both writing on paper and typing, and so I'm wondering if I could get a better implement. For some reason when I go to Walmart I'm always drawn to the lane with all the pens and pencils -- despite the fact that for the most part I hate shopping. My favorites: I like 0.5 mm mechanical pencils, and especially the ones that are largely metal. The two models I liked best were the Zebra M-301 and the Papermate G-Force. The G-for…

I need something that will give me the ability to read and run track at the same time. I really thought that this being 2011 google would pull something up that would, even in the worst case, just suck. I can't find anything??? Did I miss something?? It really sucks running on a tread mill at the gym and sweating on the text book. Having to find the optimal seating arrangement so that the page is legible and not at an angle to my vision is usually not possible and I'm left holding down the page. I need to do more exercising but I can't give up study time, I have very little time for either. I have searched out other options in the past including text to speech. …

I have electric heat, and this time of year it's always on. I also have two lights (florescent) a computer and two monitors that my roommate suggests I turn off more to save electricity. In the summer I'd agree, but all energy "wasted" becomes heat - light bounces around the room (a small amount escapes, but the blinds are always closed) and creates background heat, and all the electrical devices just create excess heat - and since we don't have gas for heat, electric heat is just as efficient (cost wise) when produced by lights/cpus/etc as from electric heaters, right? If anything, having my lights or computer on should just lower the amount of heat the heater has …

I was reading the topic title to, http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/55130-does-a-black-hole-singularity-have-size-within-the-black-holes-event-horizon/ Which was, "Does a black hole singularity have size within the black hole's event horizon?" This inspired my intrest as a question to the topic title itself. Does a black hole's singularity have size? I know that there is the type of black hole singulartiy where it is a one dimensional ring within the black holes inner event horizon. How do we describe the one dimension singularity in a three dimensional world? could you in fact pass through the event horizon by traveling along a perticular x,y,z path? Or be…

  24. Hi Folks, Another language question. Which is generally preferred or considered more acceptable: "We consider a space alpha ..." or simply: "Consider a space alpha ..." Should I try to avoid the use of personal pronouns 'as a rule' or it really just a matter of 'use whatever language aids the communication process best' ? I find that using the personal pronouns sometimes comes more naturally as I write. I know that i've seen this style used often before in maths & science texts - but I'm a bit worried that I'm recalling it from my University "teaching/student books" and that it may not be as well accepted at a higher level. Comments & o…

Greetz, What is the correct term for "pairs of opposites" that "cancel to zero". For example: 7 and -7 cancel to zero if added identical rising and falling waves cancel to zero if they interfere at a point where their amplitude is precisely the same a particle and an antiparticle cancel each other out if they interact The word complementary seems to describe the relationship quite well, but there are (many) very specific uses in Maths & Physics. So we'd hit some confusion there. The word symmetry also seems to describe the relationship quite well since we could say: 7 and -7 lie symmetrically opposite from each other in equal distance from …
