I'd like to share a bit of a psychological case study and then a dream that this particular patient had. Then I thought it would be fun for some of you psycho analytical - modern day Freud’s to take a stab at interpreting it! A man in his early thirty visits his psychologist for the first time. The man is about 35 years old, and a catholic priest. He has never been in a sexual relationship ever in his life, partly because he was raised by his mother to believe that sex was an awful and disgusting act that totally degraded women. Which you could argue the fact that his relationship with his mother drove him to become a priest. The man had been struggling with thou…

I will admit at first that i know very limited information about nero-linguistic programming, simply that those who believe in it think that they understand the 'system' that the brain uses in common occurences and deliberately tries to use this to change yourself or the actions of others. That was actually a pretty awfull deffinition, but no worries because this is mainly to those who already have an understanding of this pseudo-science. What are the common arguments against NLP? is this really as far out an idea as many skeptic comments seem to believe it is? how grounded is it in actual science? Thanks in advance

There are two orientations by which one focuses consciousness, with are extroversion and introversion. An extroverted orientation has the current behind consciousness flowing into the vocal cords and body. While an introverted orientation has the same current flowing into the imagination. Most people can use both orientations, although most people usually are born with one of the other as their primary orientation.

I would like to begin a post to get everyone's opinion as to what constitutes natural human instinct and behavior. Humans are different than animals in that we can act both inside and outside the range of observed animal instinct and behavior. Some of this extended behavior may be natural human, while other aspects of this extended hehavior might be unnatural human behavior.

Hello there, Has anyone found some proper medical proof that "Mental Disorders" exist other than in ones own mind. I haven't seen anything that convinces me to believe that high Dopermine levels cause Schizophrenia or low Seratonin causes Depression. If it were true altering these levels would cure the problem. But in reality it is obvious that it doesn't.

There was a comedy variety show back in the 60's, which is still around in reruns, led by the comedian Flip Wilson. One of his characters had the explain-all line "the Devil made me do it!". No matter what the character did inappropriately for laughs, the "Devil made me do it", explanation shifted all the responsibility to a third party, so the character could get away with anything for laughs. It is funny. The modern psycho-science uses a line very similar to Flip Wilson, "genetics made me do it!" The question I have is, with psycho science unable to define consciousness in any consensus way, how can they extrapolate genes into an output behavior, without any valid…

Does anyone have any good IQ tests to take? I've always been curious about my IQ, and those crappy ones from the book store are obviously not good. If I can get a near perfect score on the adult one, odds are it's false. anyway, I'd like to take one that's at least half-decent, if one exists.

hello when people claim they are hearing voices, or seeing things, i've come to the conclusion they really are. why, because of the brain being wired incorrectly or a chemical imbalance causing incorrect functionality. what they are experiencing are auditory and vision playbacks of images and sounds stored in the brain. most people reading this will have heard a train whistle as it was coming towards you in your life. just bring it up in your mind, can you heard it. now imagine do to physical or enviormental damage to your mind you loose the ability to control when that sound memory is called up. you could be at work or school or walking down the street …

I am currently studying educational psychology, and have just covered a study by Mellanby et al. which suggests that the reason for girls exceeding boys academically is due to the curricula and the schooling being more suited to girls. What exactly is meant by this, and how is it possible to actually scientifically prove this?

Conservatives would argue that pornography is morally wrong and psychologically harmful, while liberals would say that porn relieves stress and sexual tensions. Some believe that pornography is degrading to women, while others can argue that most women engage in sexually explicit activity by their own free will. You can also see those religious billboards on the highway that say "PORN DESTROYS SOULS." Is there any evidence that pornography is actually psychologically detrimental? Does porn afect one's social life. Are MEN the ONLY ones who look view porn? I realize the awkward subject matter, and only ask that it be addressed professionally and seriously.

As I understand it the concepts of the Ego and Id were introduced by Freud. These terms have croped up on a number of threads in both the psychology and neuroscience forums here recently. To what extent are these concepts actually used in modern cognitive psychology? Are they used by phychiatrists? Is there any value in their use at all? I was under the impression that they were basically outdated.

When suffering from depression, could periods of feeling in a good mood, being quite friendly and "benign" (for lack of a better word) be classed as hypomania, or simply as state of temporary respite from the symptoms of depression? If these periods of feeling benign are actually hypomania and not temporary lack of depression (as in feeling "neutral"), could this be symptomatic of bi-polar disorder?

This is an observation that anyone who has had or will have a kitten can observe. Even though the kitten was removed from its mother quite early, and may have only lived with its siblings in cage, once it gets home and comfortable, it is very common for them to play imaginary chase games. It is almost like internal brain software is projecting practice data through their eyes, into the environment, helping them to practice stalking, hunting and tracking skills. When they go into the environment they are already trained and prepared. Does basic collective human propensity also work via ingrained personality software and maybe projection?

It is rather quite bizarre, when I imagine running my teeth against sandy concrete my neck tightens up and I pull my head back to relieve the strange uneasy feeling I get. I can resist it but doing so just makes me feel more strange (cant quite think of a word to best describe the feeling). This happens every single time I think about it, even now as I type. I do not experience this feeling for any other thoughts. Is this experience common? Does it have a name?
