Hi, I graduated with a BS in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh last spring. Now, I am working on my masters in education. I am not sure if I want to teach anymore, and the uncertainty of finding a job in education is scaring me. So, I was looking at some other possible career routes that I could take, and I came across pharmaceutical sales. I was wondering if any of you are pharmaceutical sales representatives, and if you wouldn’t mind filling me in what I need to do to prepare for interviews for this position. (The company that I am looking to apply to is Glaxo Smith Kline.) Thanks!

A new study suggests that prayer actually does give a positive effect. Of course, I still remember the last study, which suggested that prayer on behalf of a patient was ineffective, and even a bad thing when the patient was aware of it. And so now I have to wait to see what the reaction to the latest one is. What's your take?

Vitamin B17 was the topic of great controversy over 30 or so years ago when some of the worlds top scientists claimed that when consumed the components of the seed make it 100 % impossible to develop cancer and will kill existing cancer in the most cases. Who here heard about this? As you may know Vitamin BH17 is found in most fruit seeds, manely Apricot seeds. The pharmacuticals companies together with the medical establishments pushed the FDA into making it ilegal to sell 'raw' apricot seeds or vitamin B17 with information about it's effects on cancer. Even to this day you cant get raw apricot seeds in your health food store only the sun dried ones which have all t…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6517645.stm What a break through. Read the article. Scientists have actually grown heart valve tissue. I think it's supposed to be coming into use over the next decade. Hopefully when it comes in it will relieve some of the pressure on organ donation. With an aging population, I guess the demand for organ transplant increases; so it may come at just the right time.

I was reading this article the other day: http://www.motogp.com/en/motogp/motogp_news.htm?menu=news&news_id=19275&championship_id=2&section=1 which is regarding the condition of a motorcycle racer who suffered some really serious injury's in a practice session on saturday. Anyway, the doctors put him into a coma - I was wondering why this was so, and what they would use to put someone in a coma? I've always thought that a coma would be best avoided? Thanks, Matt

Hi! I've been asking people about the major that should be taken to pursue a career in Medicine - specifically, doctor in medicine (family doctor, or surgeon, etc.). My classmates tells me that I should take Kinesiology major since it is the easiest. It deals with the anatomy of the human body. Others say that I should take Biochemistry major, which is a lot harder than any other subjects (probably, the hardest major). So, the Biochemistry major, as I know, will help the student to prepare for the MCAT test. Recently, I was told by my mother that I shouldn't take the Kineosology major, as was adviced by her doctor. The reason is this major do not give a wide var…

Hey guys. I've been told to take this to aid me in my hyperhidrosis. I went to a doctor and he prescribed me neurotonin which contains something called gabapentin. I'm not sure if it's the same GABA I looked up on the internet that comes in pills and powder form like some sort of supplement (vitamin packaging and whatnot). Can someone aid me on this? And what would be better, powder or pill form if I want to order some online? Much thanks.

So I've been having a problem for about 4 months now with my head. I'm asking about it here because I'm not sure what the problem is, and I would appreciate some educated opinions on the matter. It began with a tender feeling in the upper-left-backhand corner of my head, the sort of feeling being it felt a bit bruised to the touch. I had pulled muscles in my shoulder blade (nothing all that serious) 4 years earlier and had been popping my back since, as it would get stiff from time to time. I took the tenderness in my head as being a result of me popping my back and somehow effecting the muscles in my head. Well that tenderness stopped for the most part a few m…

I need help with a problem, I thought I got rid of it, but it's back and it seems worse. It's gonna mess with my life if I can't cure it In 1997, I bought a game for the Playstation 1 called Alien Trilogy, I started to play it, I loved the gameplay and the graphics and I knew from a magazine that there's over 30 levels in the game. So This game was actually great and I was ready to go through this brilliant game, I started to destroy the big black aliens first and went thru parts of the level, then came little creatures called face huggers. Because of Alien Trilogy being a first person shooter and if you watched the Alien films, you'll no that the face huggers of caus…

First, some background: My Grandmother suffered from osteoporosis, among other things which were mostly related to radiation poisoning (she took part in early medical trials involving X-rays). For the last ten years of her life she required nursing home care, and over that period became increasingly bed bound. Due to the osteoporosis, her spine began to crumble until she stood at less than half her original height. It was in a sense fortunate that she had previously had one lung and half of the other removed due to tuberculosis, as this was what essentially "made space" within the chest cavity for this degree of "crumpling" to occur without destroying any organs…

Hi, new to the forum. I have a question for you pharmacological types out there… When you use the term “half-life”, as it relates to an organisms ability to remove a chemical, does the given half-life incorporate all of the secondary metabolites associated with the chemical? As an example, the given half-life of morphine is 2-3 hours. Morphine is metabolized mostly in the liver by glucuronidation to various other morphine analogues (M3G, M6G…) Does this half life value incorporate the time needed to remove these chemical as well? Also, how does HL (half-life) relate to physiological activity? The HL for some benzodiazepines is in excess of 100 hours, yet their effects w…

Lack of exposure to sunlight can result in vitamin D deficiencies, which can lead to osteoporosis down the track. It is suggested that people who do not expose themselves to much sunlight supplement vitamind D levels with their diet. What I want to know is what types of food has much vitamin D and whether or not all dairy products (such as milk) are vitamin D rich or only specific ones?

How can we stop the terror that is immoral doctors? Too many immoral doctors have access to a lethal combination of dangerous drugs and vulnerable patients. Can we weed them out at medical school. I set up a small website to give some examples. Can we stop the Harold Shipman's (of Hyde) and Dr David Armstrong (of Edinburgh) of the world?

I want to start off by saying this is a completely serious thread... First off... Lately I've been have umm.... For lack of a better term: "unbearably smelly flatulence"... And small amounts of diarrhea. I haven't been eating anything out of the ordinary except for juice... I NEVER drink juice (Ever.) but for the last two weeks (around the time this "issue" started occurring...) I started drinking a lot of juice, mostly cranberry, because I decided to give up soda and I had to replace it with something. My mom suggested that my body was doing a major system clean up. Is that possible? Or do I have some sort of crazy intestinal problem? My second question is: What's t…

My dad is 66 years old and very active and young. An hour before he goes to bed he takes three Benadryl tablets totalling 75mg. He has been doing this every night for at least five years because he said if he doesn't he can't get to sleep. With them, he sleeps soundly. I love him and I'm worried that long term usage might harm him.... Please let me know if I have to worry or not. Bettina

A friend of mine is having a bit of trouble, and the first thing I think most people will say will be that she needs to go to the hospital, but I am having a bit of trouble convincing her to go. Last Feb, she starting having episodes where she'd pass out and when she came to she'd have severe muscle weakness and things of that nature, and a few other symptoms. She spent about 50k of her own money and lost her job while in the hospital, but none of the doctors in the large city she lived in could find anything wrong. The symptoms went away, and she moved to this rural area for a good job (in the medical industry) which went sour, but she managed to get on her feet…

Hi, My school recently hired a new gifted teacher and well, she wants people in gifted club to do something as "individual project." I'm pretty busy but I want to do something that deals with medicine since that's where I plan to go. What would be a good project that is not TOO MUCH time consuming? I have to take SAT and other extracurriculum activities as well. Thank you! P.S. If anyone recommends job shadowing, that's my senior project so that's not allowed.
