I'm a junior in high school planning to major in neuroscience and am trying to get into the best college possible. I know I would increase my chances of getting in if I demonstrated a passion for neuroscience, so I'm trying find activities that would do this. The only thing I can come up with is to start a Cognitive Science Club at my high school. Any other ideas?

Apprently these experiments were indeed carried out in USSR in the 40's, and there are some journal articles in regards to those, however, I'm not sure if the real experiment is what's shown in this video, check it: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=rSrIkUXwsNk If anyone has other videos or articles about similar experiments please post here. Also, a question: would similar experimentation with regular lab mice for instance be illegal these days?

How far can neuronal axons reach within the brain? For example, have there been found single neurons that stretch from the occipital lobe all the way to the prefrontal cortex? Or maybe from the rightmost edge of the right temporal lobe to the leftmost edge of the left temporal lobe? I'm asking because I'm wonder if any arbitrary brain center can potentially stimulate (or inhibit) any other arbitrary brain center (by "arbitrary", I mean given that one doesn't know - not that everyone's brain is different).

I don't know if this is the right place to post; I actually just registered in hopes of finding someone who might know this. I asked to do research in a lab on molecular operations of astrocyte ion channels and transporters, and cytokines and gp120 in AIDS dementia complex. The thing is, I didn't know I had to come up with the project myself. I thought I would basically be assisting the professor with his own research, but I'm pretty sure now I have to come up with something to do on my own, with him supervising. I have to make an appt. to meet him (I just emailed him), but I want to have some idea of what I want to do before then. The advisor told me to find some…

Hey guys I need some help. So I have science fair on thursday, (and it's due by tuesday..eek) so i'm researching on how drugs may induce/cause schizophrenia, and how they(drugs) affect the brain. I'm kind of going with the whole overreacting dopamine theory, and i'm wondering how some drugs may affect the dopamine levels in the brain, and what happens. I've been researching a lot and it's been hard to find some pretty recent information. Maybe I should change my topic and narrow it down to some other point? Oh yeah, and I would've just done schizophrenia in general but some girls took my idea so I wanted to change mine a bit so that I can beat them ! sor…

All these threads in Anatomy, Physiology and Neuroscience about itching have gotten me curious. When a stimulus causes an itch, what will happen if we never respond to it? Aside from the intense frustration and annoyance of having a perpetual itch. Will it cause any after-effects if you don't itch? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just started thinking about it when I was getting my hair cut and some hair landed on my nose, and it started itching.

Hi all at SFN I'm a classic ectomorph at the moment, but ectomorphs are suppose to be born skinny and have super fast metabolisms. Thing is, I'm going through the prime of puberty at the moment, which means I get a major boost in metabolism. In my elementary years, I was very much an endomorph, but in my teens, I am very much an ectomorph. My question is this: Is it my metabolism boost that has helped me to become an ectomorph, or is it that I am a true ectomorph ('cause I look like it)? For those of us that don't know about somatotypes: Ectomorphs are thin and lanky, have super-fast metabolism and find it difficult to gain muscle. Endomorphs are ro…

I recently read this article and got me wondering; could we be thinking about doing one thing, and then do another? or would it be all planned out in our subconscious so that we can't really do anything 'spontaneously'? Sorry if it's a little vague, I'll try and clarify if someone (or everyone) is confused.

I've got limited knowledge on human physiology. Given that there must be calibrations for individuals etc, does anyone know what the typical variability of the LVET(left ventricular ejection time) is as a function of the relevant variables. I guess assuming normal heart function. I presume LVET = f(HR,...?) with some calibration paramters HR = heart rate. I'm working on a bioimpediance application to do a non-invasive estimate cardiac output, and the standard prescription is to put in a typical fixed LVET. But I am doubtful how sensible that is. Should I at minimum include a linear correction vs bpm? There will be simultanous ECG measurement too. Any "…

I’m interested in experiments that allege to show that ‘decisions’ are made before people are ‘consciously’ aware they’ve made them. I vaguely recall Californian experiments in the 70’s that showed this, and more recently in London. If anyone has links? (Specific to the above). But also, any criticisms of these results or methods. Because the implications are profound. Should I believe that ‘consciousness’ plays no role in our day to day lives? That it’s a back-seat driver to ‘intelligence’. Our consciousness retro-justifies our actions, after they’ve been made? What do these experiments really show? Data first.

Hi, everyone out there, please help!! Over a year ago, my ex-fiance and I started to feel like bugs crawling on our body. We first thought we had ticks, fleas, bed bugs etc etc. But we checked everything we could with doctors, onlilne...but nothing came up. Then we thought back the timing and remembered our landlord cleaned the carpet stain with some chemicals so maybe we were allergic to that. But the weird thing is: it's been a year and we have gone our separate ways, we still feel it occasionally. And the last time it happened to me was when I vistied my folks in Asia and I was using my mom's computer. I started to feel those "phantom bugs" again! And now that I had t…

Hi, I am in school and am doing a presentation on Kuru disease, or anything about the Fore tribe of New Guniea. What I would really like is to talk with someone who lived through the ritual of cannabalism after a loved one died, it was out of respect that they had these ceremonies of cannabalism. Does anyone have any answers for me, I would greatly appriciate it. Thank you

Someone told me once that you could kill yourself using just your mind. I think there could be some truth to this, there are people who can control their heartbeats. What do you think? How much power does the mind have?

Can a living brain have a sense of anything when the 5 sense organs are removed from it? Is there any experiment that shows a brain's activity with the 5 senses removed? Is there any activity? What is it doing?

Hello, I think that the mind is not other thing that us. All of the synapses are we. A lot of people dream with eternity ( all of religions) and It's comprensible because nobody wants to die usually, not? So I look for eternity also, but... not like religions, with science. My idea is that, if we got to make a machine that it can copy identically our memories (We would be like plants without memory) We would live more years... We must study the brain, and when we understand it completely, We will near the eternity:rolleyes: What do you think? Do you like eternity? Would you like to be immortal? P.d.: I speak a little english. If you don't understand my m…

Hi, I need help in understanding why defibrillation is unlikely to be successful in VT associated with Tricyclic antidepressant overdose. It has to so with the block in the fast sodium channels, I know, but what happens if you do defibrillate anyway.

have you ever had an itch, gave it a quick rub/scratch only to find it`s Still there? Unlike an ordinary itch where you Hit-The-Spot instantly and it`s gone, these are really Odd! and after some considerable minutes it`s STILL THERE! so you you wriggle about a bit and find that the itch that you Thought was on you thigh or elbow, was Actualy in reality on your ankle or shoulder or even your Back! somewhere along the line the signal gets mixed up, and the irritation is not in the place the brain "sees" it. I`m 100% sure I`m not the only one this happens too as I`ve asked others and they get the same at times. so what`s Actualy going on here?

I was just wondering if any neuro grad students can share their experiences with us. I am thinking of going into grad school for neuro and was wondering about... -pros/cons -daily activities -favorite parts/worst parts -how you chose your research field -why you went into the field -masters or Ph.D student -plans for after grad school -any advice for prospective grad students ...I know there are other ways to find this information out, however I want to hear everyones personal experience and besides people tend to be more realistic/honest online than in person.

Does the brain impose principles and values to intergrate information to learn from experience! is it first concious then subconcious if so how do i unlearn old intergrated behaviour patterns.if i hold a hot cup my reactive reponse would probably be to drop it, is this subconcious ...how does the nervous system come into play here! Please excuse me if my question is not precise , if there is any websites that anyone can recommend on intergrating of information, behavioural patterns, nervous system ect and how that work together !

If a person was prevented from seeing or knowing about a certain colour until they were an adult and then that colour was revealed to them, what do you think would happen? Do you think they would go insane? How would your mind cope with that?
