Philosophy and Religion Rules

Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.

Philosophy/religion forum rules:

  1. Never make it personal.
    1. Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
    2. Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
  2. Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
  3. Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.

Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.

These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

I was watching a program on the BBC yesterday where a coupple were looking at various houses to buy. They wanted to spend about £500,000 and get somthing with a few acres of grounds to live there high quality life in a village. I on the other hand have a nice flat, with a bed, desk, lamp, bathroom, comfy chair but no sofa. All clean, tidy, nicely furnished, tuned to perfection and well cared for. Of all the things I have those that are only my own are stored there. This place has just one room and this is on purpose. Sometimes I go into one of my many kitchins in the city center to eat, or walk in my extensive gardens full of parks and other recreational green are…

Which kind of universe would people prefer to live in, one which has freedom to choose (free will) or one that is set and determined? Is it better to find yourself in a universe with free will or a universe with out it?

Inner ears balanced put the eyes parallel to the horizon, truing us, to the earth. The nose, and toes forward, the back and butt, back and behind. The head up, the feet firmly on the ground. We are built to comprehend 3 dimensional space. Left and right, foward and back, up and down. In- through the eyes and nose and mouth and ears and skin Out- through the nose and mouth and voice and pores and waste channels We are built to know self and other. Okay im looking for a word that represents a beginning in time, but not the creation of time itself just a pivotal point in time whereby everything after it is relative to it, such moments can be defined in terms of the big bang, the death of christ, the renaissance and many more. It could be defined as a moment in time whereby everything after it will be seen or judged by it, i think the word starts with a "C" but im not 100% sure. I dont think it necessarily has to be a HUGE part of time either, for example it could be used to describe the moment in time a good football player came to your club and your club became european champions because of it. So to me this isn…

Hi all, What would you do to make society better? I've always thought it's crazy to pay footballers £1000's ( or more) every week to do something that A) They love, and B) Does not benefit society when the people that do benefit society are often underpaid - doctors and refuse collectors (without which we would be knee deep in filth and disease within a month) spring to mind What about fair distribution of wealth/work? Any ideas?

If you take a thing literally, and explain it figuratively. And you take a thing figuratively and explain it literally. And you look at both of your explanations and find a thing that is the same from both perspectives, don't you then "know" that thing that is the same? And would that thing, not have to be true?

  8. The following is my theory on what my existence is and what it means: There are an infinite number of universes with an infinite number of possibilities. Each universe is a closed system, and it's virtually impossible to move from one to another. It may be impossible to even detect the existence of other universes, because they exist in a world with different laws than ours and in a place that can't even be quantified. There is no "distance" between universes, because there isn't a medium or dimensional fabric between them. Our Universe, like all universes, is fundamentally nothing. Matter balances with anti-matter; electrons balance with protons; even good…

According to the True principles of Nature, the entire universe is created by two forces: One of which was defined (by Latins ?) as, "Unus", while the other was defined as, "Versus". And thus the word "universe" became coined out of these two nouns. What this clearly means is that the Latins ? or whoever spoke that language first, they knew the truth about nature in all respects, since the word "universe" clearly refers to the actual manner of how the two forces operate with one another in nature. Therefore, this is not accidental for the word universe to be such as it is. Furthermore, the Latins ? also had a specific definitions for the two poles of the Earth, the no…

  10. Over the past couple of months my life has seemed to lack direction and no matter what i did things became no clearer until an idea regarding the age old theory of destiny came into my head. I was wondering if we could all have a set destiny laid out for us, but not by a god or any other spiritual force but by scientific reason. If my life, for example, were to be lived out a thousand times to the same exact beginning specifications then surely all instances would be exactly the same. I came onto this idea by wondering how i would do things differently and if we really have any choices to make or does the chemical make up of our brain and everything around us mean that we…

Hi all, Descartes said "cogito ergo sum" or "I think therefore I am" Isn't this a cop out? Picture the scene: The existentially challenged Descartes is pondering his existence, is it real or some illusion/dream. It becomes a bit difficult and he thinks "well, if I'm thinking about it then I must be real otherwise I couldn't think at all", job done off he goes. Isn't this a perfect example of circular reasoning? A self fulfilling prophesy of sorts? Why not say "I have legs therefore I am" or "I can see things so they must be real" or "I have a hammer therefore I must be a builder". It seems a bit weak to me... Surely just the ability to th…

Can fate and free will work together. I always wondered if maybe fate is the door presented to you and free will is your option to walk through it. Or is fate something different alltogether? Do we stumble through life or are we guided by some plan from a supreme being? If fate does exsist and is not just a door of oportunity, then what wold be the point of doing anything at all? And if you did nothing, would it be able to be called fate or would we always wonder if we had an oportunity to do something. Do we guide our own fate? Or is it guided for us? The real thing I want to ask is what exactly is fate or free will? And can we tell for sure which one we are participatin…

The true concept of God is as follow; God if a three quantitative reality; Two of which are scalar in character, and one of which is a vector quantity. The three quantities may be best described as; Numbers, Space, and Light. However each quantity has a multiple variety of different meanings, but all closely related to one another. And here are some examples of their meanings; Numbers for example may indicate an amount of; mass, matter, energy, molecules, atoms, particles e.t.c. Space may relate to; a volume, an area, a domain, a sphere, a length, a distance, a diameter, or a radius e.t.c. Light on the other hand as a vector quantity has some extra ordinary cha…

  16. A human is in and of reality. We experience a "here and now". We internalize the outside world and build an analog model of it. When our model fits the actual world that we have a model of, it makes us feel good. When the actual world does not fit our model, we adjust our model to fit, or when within our power, we adjust the world to fit. When things do not fit, it makes us feel bad. We have hunger, thirst, and other "feelings" of emptiness or lack that "need" to be fulfilled for things to be right. We are born, we grow, we learn about the world, we explore the world, we share our experience of it with others, and try to fix what is "wrong" and enjoy what is …

I am at the stage in the life where I have not specialised and am thinking about a career in a scientific field, most likely in biology. However, I have always found thinking about future life choices difficult. I might describe myself as nihlistic, the fact that my lifespan is so short and how the human race will eventually die out is often on my mind. Truth be told, I dislike my existence as a human -- to live for such short a time and to be controlled by so many instincts and requirements is something I'd rather be without. During the course of my existentialist musings, I often think about ways in which I could provide a permanent assistance to mankind -- to me this …

All stars and planets are limiter in their proportions. However they are all divided into seven layers, both inside and outside. Although none of these layers is visible (with the exception of outer ones which are very hard to distinguish). But they do exist, and are somewhat similar to electron shells, and most of the layers are divided into two equal halves. The first innermost layer (1) which represents the nucleus of a star or a planet, is the densest in mass, and so it follows, second layer is the second densest, and so on. However it is the innermost layer (1) where neutrons are being formed and transformed (fused and fission) into the protons. And then they join t…

Howdy all I remember years ago when I was working in a new IT job I read some literature from a computer company (in the US I think). They were putting out stuff like the early Microsoft Co did like database, spreadsheet and wordprocessing software ( for CP/M systems if I remember correctly ) etc.. Basically someone high up in the company was making a commentary on the companys' products and their utility and usefullness. The guy was saying that technology was now leading us into a new age of Wisdom (which is perfectly OK to say). I thought his statements though were a bit over the top (just like when we are informed of new technical breakthroughs wh…

Imagine your life as a river. The river will always travel in the same general direction. It will always begin in the same place, and it will always end in the same general location. This is how fate may be represented. Now imagine the journey of all of the water that flows in that same river. Imagine all the bends and turns and consequences for every nuance that exists as a result of the formation of this river. The starting and ending points remain the same yet the journey is what makes the river distinct; even it's very condition as it defines itself utterly throughout the course of it's formation. This is how free will may be represented. How you st…

Hello everyone. I wish everyone well. This is my first posting in a forum. I am of the view that argument is a form of conversation that should be avoided all of the time. This means if I want to say something I am to say it in a manner that is not arguable. If I cannot achieve this I am not entitled to say it. It is important to understand that if I make a statement that is arguable then the person receiving the statement will in all likelihood respond by argument. For example, if we are trying workout is something is concious or not it is important that before stating the word concious its definition be clear and understood or I cannot use the term. I know I am concio…

So I was wondering if immoral people typically win their battles and I came to the conclusion that there are a lot of factors to consider. I would have to say that money and power are always big factors in the potential for somebody to be corrupt, coverup, and make some people give up. Where the law doesn't control a given issue, society tends to provide a check to control peoples' abuses. But in this day and age of self-righteous society, there is plenty of occasion for things to fall through the cracks. What's your take on this falling in society?

From the beginning it was God who first turned into light (motion), and he thus transformed in the so called "Spirit"(a breath like motion that is). And then...God separated the light from the darkness, and he called the light "Day" and the darkness he called "Night". And the light part became the Spirit of God. And the Spirit of God was (is) the moving part of his Godhead. And then...God decided to divide the light (the Day, the moving part of his Godhead that is) into a multitude of tiny divinities, each of which became the first and the smallest particles or units of energy. And these are the so called "Sons" of God (pl). But as single entities they are only semi co…

I found the most basic question about the ontology of space at the NASA Astronomy Cafe, Q&A section: ................. "Special & General Relativity Questions and Answers Can space exist by itself without matter or energy around? No. Experiments continue to show that there is no 'space' that stands apart from space-time itself...no arena in which matter, energy and gravity operate which is not affected by matter, energy and gravity. The second act, or the second cause is the one that led to a complete transformation of God, and to the beginning of the creation of the world; the Heaven and the Earth that is: However after God separated his living part "Day" from the darkness "Night", God still existed as one single entity (divinity), but apart from the darkness. And his state of being was bound to a constant state of "spirit" (a breath like motion that is). And before God enacted his second act, he prefigured every action to its absolute perfection, and then he acted accordingly. And here is how it went; God divided (dissected) his entire living Godhead into a multitude of tiny divinities, which …
