I’ve gotten a barrage of recent downvotes a bit out of the blue recently, about 4-5, I have had significant luck improving my reputation overall.

Is there a way to tell who’s downvoting you as to ask them why? Some of my statements such as “Thank you my friend!” Have been downvoted and I am curious to why someone would do that

Just guessing but something to do with undeclared use of AI text, perhaps? It's not me though, as I don't read your posts.

It could be what exchemist described or it could also be someone just expressing irritation (for example, in some cultures calling someone "my friend" may be seen as presumptuous - I am personally okay with it but I know not everyone is). The latter use of DV is not real helpful, but it seems to be a forum with a range of personalities. If you can direct me to a posting of yours where a friendly and courteous reply was downvoted, I might want to cancel it - I am not a fan of weaponized DVing.

I don’t use ai anymore as to pertain to site rules

thank you though 👍

It’s fine, I didn’t want to burden you with my own issues

I was just curious as to if I could find out who

Do you have a jealous friend?

or someone who always try to make you fail or look bad.

No, that’s not available to members because of the potential for distraction and abuse. Staff can see, and we have restricted some people’s use of the system because they were abusing it. We also know that we have a number of members who cancel out DVs, probably because they think it was undeserved (which they occasionally announce, and was indicated earlier in this thread). Plus we know that public accusations of DVs are wrong a significant fraction of the time.

Given the number of DVs were in a thread about DVs, you might consider that it’s the topic itself that some find annoying.

s it possible to tell who is DVing?

Yes, if you are a hacker. But

1) It will cost you at least $12/y most likely $50/y (for servers)

2) It can get you permanently banned.. ;)

3) It will not work in the past mode (to check the DV already received)

4) Unless you really take over the SFN database.

If you didn't really thank anyone (because there was nothing to thank them for), it was sarcasm. Someone considered it rude behavior.

As far as I remember I don't think I ever gave you any negatives. I did not participate in the threads in which you said something controversial.

If someone starts insulting other people, then most often he/she gets a lot of downvotes.

People who give you downvotes are usually those who are most active in the thread.

So by monitoring/making a script to:

https://scienceforums.net/online/

then you can already know who logged in when and correlate it with the date of receiving a downvote.

or better https://scienceforums.net/online/?filter=filter_loggedin

Thank you!

Thank you for all the helpful information everyone 😁

All you have to do is write worthwhile, interesting posts, or provide comprehensive answers to questions asked by other people.

I’m aware, I have had great luck so far

I don't think it's helpful to think of downvotes simply as people who disagree with you a lot. Most people will tell you why they disagree, and on this site they often back it up with good reasoning.

In my experience, when someone gives out negative rep, it's post-specific criticism, aimed usually at correcting a tone (assertive, dismissive, rude, derogatory, etc), or at statements that indicate the poster isn't listening to replies (the early stages of soapboxing), or the poster has used obviously fallacious argument (everybody should know what a Strawman looks like and avoid making them). I think, in most cases, it's meant as a "you should know better" signal, perhaps one we should all listen to first before deciding somebody has it out for us.

Also, I closed down the other thread on downvoting, since it seemed to be doing more harm than good. I think folks just really want to talk about science here. Weirdos.

Indeed +1, but some times there's an attempt to weaponise the DV in defence of a specious argument...

From member's that sould know better...

I have read your older posts,
You used bad tone and sometime it was very rude.

I agree with @Phi for All.It was to correct your tone.

Some are Men at age of 12 and some are still Boys at age of 22.
Well,we learn from our mistakes.
You have learnt your lesson.

I would like to think the mods may step in if a poster was liberally dishing out DVs.

A genuine post should receive a bit of slack.

Some kids on here are posting some decent stuff so even if they get it wrong, a DV may be a bit harsh IMO.

Show some love and appreciation!

I recently got downvotes for knowing too much.

This is what I was talking about earlier. Telling yourself things like this defeat the whole purpose of a downvote. You're supposed to take a hard look at the post that got the DV, be objective, think about how it was perceived by others.

Do you seriously think someone reading your post said to themselves, "He knows too much, vote him down"? On a science discussion forum?!

You are right,
I am not saying that in way you are thinking.
Its more like Sarcasm or a joke.

Don’t worry my friend

To test the feasibility in DFT or simulate its phonon/electronic properties, could you share the crystal structure? Ideally a CIF or POSCAR file, or even rough lattice parameters and atomic positions. Without the structure, we can't simulate stability, band structure, or phonons — which are needed to evaluate superconductivity claims.

13 hours ago, Radhakrishnan J said:

Are there alternative ways to validate their superconducting properties?"

it's definitely intriguing. I understand that synthesizing and testing new superconducting materials can be expensive and out of reach without funding, but there are scientific ways we can still explore and validate your concept.

If you can provide the crystal structure (even a rough sketch, ideally with space group, atomic positions, and elemental composition), we can use first-principles simulations (like DFT + phonon and electron-phonon coupling analysis) to:

  • Check the stability of the structure (thermodynamic + vibrational)

  • Calculate the electronic structure and band properties

  • Predict the electron–phonon coupling strength

  • Estimate the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) using models like McMillan or full Eliashberg theory

These simulations are widely accepted in theoretical physics and material science communities. Some even use machine-learning predictors trained on thousands of known superconductors to estimate Tc directly from structure.

So — if you’re open to it — feel free to send me:

  1. The structure file (CIF, POSCAR, or any readable format)

  2. The exact chemical formula

  3. Any assumptions or expectations you have for the superconducting behavior

I’ll be happy to help simulate or evaluate it using open-source tools. That way, you might be able to publish preliminary theoretical results or gain support for funding from institutions or journals.

Looking forward to hearing more!

No problem,i am also new to this subject.
I got downvotes because i am 15 and they think i cant write this.
They said i am decieving new member by pretending as a expert(It makes no sense)
I didnt claim to be expert,I admitted that i used AI to use correct terminology but i first learnt about it,.
I gathered info to help guy who was asking.

Ok got you. The use of Ai has pretty strict rules attached to it on the forum If you follow them you should be ok.

I use it like a translator or tool like grammarly.
I gathered all info on my own.
Its not about downvote, its about underestimating me and setting limits
.

I got another DW,hahahaha
