It appears Trump has called in the army and marines because of the protests. How is this legal, I thought the US constitution forbids the use of the military in event of protest or riot? They can call in the national guard but they cannot call in the military.

Also why the major news doing a terrible job covering the protests going on?

I think you might be referring to the possee comitatus act (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posse_Comitatus_Act)? The way I understand it, it refers mostly to federal troops (i.e. the marines). The National Guard can be used (and has been in the past), though conventionally not against the State governor's wishes.

Though the last time it happened was under Johnson, who used the National Guard to protect the civil rights movement. Basically a reversal of what has happened here.

I have seen quite a bit of coverage of the demonstrations and protests as well as legal analysis on the use of troops. While one can always argue that folks could do a better job I am not necessarily sure what a terrible job (and hence, what a better job) would be in this context.

Who said it was?

Follow-Up: If it is illegal, who will enforce it since the executive branch owns law enforcement?

And the heads of the various institutions were chosen for their loyalty to the president, i.e. they are not fulfilling their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution. Republicans in congress as well.

Yes Posse Comitatus prohibits military from engaging in law enforcement roles. However I think they are getting around this by claiming the soldiers are there to protect federal buildings. Also, the military can’t arrest you, but they can detain you-another trick they use.

The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits the use of military forces to enforce domestic laws, unless authorized by an act of Congress or the Constitution.

The legal exception to the Posse Comitatus Act is when the Executive ( President ) invokes the Insurrection Act to quiet domestic insurrection.
This would be hard for the Trump Administration to prove in court, as he has previously set the bar for Insurrection very high, claiming Jan 6 was NOT an insurrection and having pardoned ALL the perpetrators.
Whether the courts can, or will, do anything about it is a different story.

The broader tactic here is also to create fear and even if the courts manage to do something, it is designed to put pressure on folks and forcing them to pre-obey. Technically, this would be the part where the second amendment folks should be up in arms. Hmm...

They don’t care and have been blatantly ignoring court rulings. Even SCOTUS itself is dancing around cases where they know he’ll disregard their rulings, I presume bc they don’t want to look weak and confirm the constitutional crisis people have been warning about.
