His Holiness..

It is in the wrong subforum, I think. This is politics. It's no fun at all, and I fully agree with the text.

What could help against this 'loop'? I am not sure. Every action from 'the higher elites' to limit Trump's actions, would stimulate protests. It could be one step to a civil war (you may call me a pessimist...). And don't even imagine to impeach him. Maybe it is also too much for certain republicans (you may call me an optimist...). But no, that would be a huge step to a civil war.

The only thing I can think of to stress again and again that the economy gets worse and worse, and people feel it in their pockets.

E.g, one could say that 'just buy two dolls for your child, instead of 30." You may call me a cynic... Even that is already in the loop.

But a +1 anyway, not because it is funny, it is not; but is a very good description of the situation.

His FR Evangelicals, conservative RCs, and the Dominionists seriously believe he is an instrument of God, sent to bring back a more theocratic society. They are under an umbrella called NAR (New Apostolic Reformation). And there are the Christian Nationalists, who are a little different in focus - they contend that America has always been a Christian nation - it's more about identity than religion, bound up in nativism and white supremacy. But they all seem to be converging on a Trump iconography AFAICT. How anyone would look to such a damaged, amoral and delusional pantsload as an object of religious reverence is...well, it's the mystery in many cults, eh?

President Trump has been quick off the mark to congratulate Cardinal Robert Prevost on becoming the first ever American to be elected as the new Pope earlier today - under the regnal name of Leo XIV.

Vice-president J.D. Vance (a recent convert to Roman Catholicism) may be slightly less happy however, as Cardinal Prevost who originally hails from Chicago but has lived in Peru, recently excoriated the VP on Twitter/X for suggesting that Christian love was subject to a sort of ranking system  - a medieval concept known as the ordo amoris - the order of charity, often attributed to St Thomas Aquinas.

The Cardinal’s response to this back in February was robust   -  “J.D. Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others”

I note that Popeye's, the US fried chicken chain, with a certain typographical cleverness, posted “pope yes”.

I doubt that. Itsounds apostryphal to me.

Would be nice, though if the new Pope could for Magerica something like what John Paul 11 did for USSR and Poland.

IMO the reason we have an "American" pope is

No, it doesn’t work like that. But it could be that this man is a good administrator, which would help.

Can you help me understand the mechanism here? How does him becoming pope help Vatican financial health? Is the assumption he’s better at managing money bc he’s from the US?

No. The assumption is that American Catholics will give more if the pope is viewed as being "American" rather than from "over there" somewhere. I guess we will see.

You may perhaps be right. Thanks for clarifying

But if you are an atheist, why do you care which country the Pope is from?

How do the Pope and the Catholic Church correlate to science and this forum?

Umm... this is the Politics sub-forum.

As a matter of interest, my OP originally appeared in the 'Political Humour' sub-forum, but the forum moderators felt it belonged here instead, and moved it.

I don't care anything about the pope other than how he tries to push church teachings into laws around the world, hopefully minimally. The thing is, people on this forum (me included) seem to be in a relative minority when it comes to religion, so it seems to me, worthwhile to discuss the direction of around 1/5 of the world's population.
