So you think the Gospels are “Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative” as WS Gilbert put it. Not really.The Gospels don't make an narrative more convincing. They basically create the narrative. The nativity of Jesus in Bethlehem and Jesus living in Nazareth are only told in the Gospels. If there had been a real Jesus, it would have been easier for people who were there, or knew people involved, to refute some of the stories.
