  1. Most likely, as crabby toenails can be a sign of malnutrition of some sort. Look it up with a professional, see what you're missing.

    Edit: changed wording

There is no such word has crubby .

What do you mean by malnutrition ? Lacking protein or vitamins?

  2. You may want to talk about Moore's law coming to end ?

Moore's law every 18 month processors double in speed and more and more transistors can fit on the IC .The transistors get smaller and smaller .But around 2004 processor clock speed hit brick wall of 3.0 GHz with out overheating the the solution to problem dual core!!

Not sure how long we can put money into dual core and keep up with Moore's law .

  3. It is my understanding these superpowers have already changed our lives. The middle class in the US is loosing and may never regain the position of privilege they enjoyed for a relatively short time. This is crazy, we haven't had electricity and oil running our machines for that many years, and we act as through our way of life is eternal. It is not, and power is shifting to the oil countries, India and China.

While we are telling our middle class, "whoops, I am sorry, I know we promised you a nice retirement package, but we didn't budget for it, so you don't get it." And about your cushy government job, or private but government contracted job? Revenues are falling, and well you know how it is, we have to make cuts somewhere, so clean out your desk.

Well part of problem of middle class disappearing in the US and only the have and have nots is lack of jobs in the US and low paying jobs.

Not sure about Canada if they are doing better than the US.But the middle class have and has been disappearing in the US to the have and have nots .

Not sure what they are going to do about it but it is hard to get jobs and jobs that pay good.

They say the US is going into more service sector economy.

  4. Outside of debates about what really constitutes an addiction or not, let's just assume that all forms of excessive usage of pleasure-inducers is addiction. In that case, which addictions do you think would be considered more unattractive than others? Is a sober chain-smoker less attractive than an alcoholic non-smoker or vice-versa? Is a healthy non-user sex addict (think Tiger Woods) more attractive than a smoking, drinking, drug-user who is faithfully committed to monogamy? Is food-addiction and obesity preferable in a partner to other forms of addiction? What about obsessive-compulsive cleaning or other work (OCD) addiction?

should this topic be for the lounge instead of philosophy, btw?

It is not so much what is unattractive or not but was is more of a taboo. Some countries sex is big taboo some not and some very liberal.

Look at US 60 years ago you would think you where in other country .

Yet some (((Female circumcision removes the very sensitive part of the sex organ ))) in some countries .

And smoking was not a taboo to it was linked to cancer.Where smoking pot was grouped in as a hard drug to about 10 to 15 years ago it was than called a soft drug.

  5. For some reason my toenails are brittle and scratch easy for lack of medical terminology. That means when I cut my toenails I have to be very very very careful not to scratch my toenail.

When having a shower and coming out of the shower it starts to peel by the base or edges and takes a long time to heel and some times does not heel and I just have to live with it for new toenail to grow .

And if I touch it or bump it not hard it scratches easy and peels easy. You have to treat your toenails as if it is a glass ornament.

It slow to heel and very sensitive to water or touch.About 6 months ago I bumped one of my toenails very hard and it was black ,blue and bruised with blood !! It still is but is taking long time grow out .

I thought it takes 12 months to grow a new toenail? It is ony one third the way !! And this was 6 months ago!!

My toenails are slow to heel and grow. And get scratched easy and cannot put water on it or have a shower.

This was not the case 6 years ago my toenails was much stronger and could take much more of a beating.

I hear you can take alot about a persons health by looking at their toenails .

Note I do have other major health problems that start close that same time.

  6. We had a thread on this topic earlier, entitled 'Medical Stagnation.'

I cannot find the thread 'Medical Stagnation' in your post history list or in Medical Science> section of the group

I cannot find it.The admin must of move it or delete the thread.

none a search using the search box key words Medical Stagnation and still cannot find it.

  7. To an extent, the money and the science issues merge, since if the science were more advanced then trips to Mars would cost less and we might actually be going there. In the 1960s there was a cartoon called '1999' which showed people travelling around the universe, each in his own spaceship, and this must have seemed reasonable at least to some people at the time.

The 60's and 70's and little in 80'a was years of space race. The money going into NASA and DOD was unreal the late 80's was year of cut backs and now the space program is dead.

The people perception of having moon base by 1990 and by 2002 having mars base and by 2015 people living on mars and small star trek enterprise by 2020 and big star trek enterprise by 2050 is on a linear growth in space technology.

But unlike computers and electrons that are linear growth the space technology is not.The rocket propulsion system does not allow it it is fixed technology. The space capsule smaller than you room with 3 people to go to moon on rocket bigger than high rise apartment is dead through way has not change.Meaning it takes big apartment just to take up 3 people in small space capsule smaller than you room .

Where people perception is going to mars in big 20 story apartment and the engine room no bigger than the basement of apartment and no through away of any thing.

In the real world chemical rockets does not work this way and not some thing that is going get more fuel efficient where we can take up more and more payload and less and less rocket just to take up the payload .

The moon trip by 2015 or 2020 before it got cut was by critics was called apollo on steroids do to not much inprovement in rockets and mostly the interior design and electrons that shine.

The rockets of 2011 or rocket of 1959 is not that much better. And chemical rockets is not some thing that will get more fuel efficient where we can take up more and more payload and less and less rocket .

Ion or plasma rocket can only be used in space and cannot be used to take up payload same with space sail. The fusion rocket or antimatter rocket is beyond today's level of technology if it even works .And space elevator and laser propulsion is still 50 or 100 years out before we can test it see if it work or not.And with energy so costly the laser propulsion may not be that much better than chemical rockets.

I thing in order for scfi to be real like what you see in movies you need ion lifters or anti gravity or levitation or magnetic monopoles or other exotic space propulsion system to make what you see in movies or what UFO can do real or if none the above is real or work than what see in movies and scfi will always be scfi and UFO will always be a spirit and not a alien .

Has chemical rockets ,Ion rocket, plasma rocket ,fission or fusion rockets do not do this .

  8. The medical progress is coming to brick wall.

The medical progress is slowing down and yes medical breakthroughs is slowing down .Yes the public does expects medical breakthroughs to occur all the time and medical progress but it is slowing down very fast. One can just look at cancer, autoimmune diseases and organ failure.

The problem with medicine is there is two approaches to problem drugs or surgery. And for the past 100 years drugs ware flying out like flies but are slowing down now and there is nothing surgery can do for cancer, autoimmune diseases and organ failure.

When it comes to electronics that stop working or going bad we pop out the bad part and pop in the good part. This cannot be done with human body we cannot pop out the bad part and pop in the good part or take soldering iron .This means drugs are the only option.

But drugs work well for chemicals or going after living things not cancer, autoimmune diseases and organ failure. The drugs do not have intelligent to tell cells what to do or to heal.

And surgery cannot heal or tell cells what to do.So the two approaches to problem of drugs or surgery is coming to brick wall of what it can do.

And dotors do not heal they use the two approaches to problem of drugs or surgery and this is coming to brick wall of what it can do..

Well some dotors hope in 50 or 100 years from now we will tell genes when to turn off or when to turn on and there will be a three approaches to problem of drugs or surgery or telling of when to turn on or off the genes.

But yes other than that medical progress is slowing down and yes medical breakthroughs is slowing down very fat .

Look at cancer, autoimmune diseases and organ failure what a joke it is no breakthroughs here.

  9. Well, at the start of this thread you said:

If there's a shortage of doctors and staff, it makes sense to raise their wages to try to encourage more people to become doctors and health-care-staff. You can't have it both ways: you can't drop their wages and expect more people to become doctors etc.

Unless you're arguing that there's not enough money to hire enough because they are too individually expensive?

Try to go to med school you will see how hard it is to get in and how much it cost and your brain will explode after going to school do to information over load in one day.

The fact there is doctors is is amazing .

  10. 3. Doctors and staff over pay .

This is inconsistant with the OP's claim that there's a staff shortage.

If that's true, then increased wages could incentivize more people to staff the NHS.

sorry what are you trying say here.

Don't forget that the reason why there's so much money to bargain away from the person who is paying for their daughter's treatment is due to an economy that privileges certain business people because they have access to cash flows generated by things like Bermuda golf vacations and yacht sales,

What does golf vacations and yacht sales have to with it? That money does not make its way to inprove science or understanding of the human body.

the doctors are only cashing in on revenues that they themselves produce by spending their big incomes

You mean they them self want that really bad.

The only difference in economies with social-governance is that income gaps are lessened while class-stratification is maintain by cultural norms to which people conform

    What?

Please don't tell me that you believe class distinctions and discrimination are a thing of the past in the social-economies of this world

    What do you mean?

Also note I think it was in the late 90's when Canada started to do cut backs and started to have long wait times in ER.

  11. What is your evidence for saying that most people have these beliefs. I think you may be guilty of committing the same errors that the media makes when reporting scientific studies: you are generalising and misinterpreting from inadequate or poorly understood information.

As to the claims themselves, what makes you think we could not live on the Moon or Mars?

Why do you think space mining is a joke?

When you suggest a trip to Mars is not possible in ten years, do you mean politically and economically impossible, or technically impossible? the same question for the Moon base or Mars base?

I don't think these questions are off topic, but address your OP. You seem to be forming your opinions based upon a minimum of information of questionable reliability. That would explain why you have little confidence in science: you are not being directly exposed to any.

There is a difference can we go to moon or Mars in 10 to 15 years or do we have the money.Has of now the space program is dead.

Has for space mining or space colony that is scfi to the cost of going in space goes down alot and I mean alot.

And no one knows how to bring the space cost down not even on paper in theoretical science class. The only theoretical theorings floating around is space elevator ,laser propulsion ,fission or fusion.

  12. That does not read well.I think what It should be what Medical progress in cancer treatment in the past 10 to 15 years if any ?

Any one have stats to show? This should clear up this confusing thread.

  13. Health-care injection $190M

Alberta's health superboard will spend $190 million in new funding to improve emergency waiting times and speed access to cancer care and knee replacements, after new statistics show the system continues to struggle to meet some targets.

Between October and December 2010, for instance, cancer patients continued to wait 6.3 weeks from their referral to their first appointment with a radiation oncologist, instead of the target of 4.9 weeks for the year end. Waits stalled from the previous quarter and actually went up from the first quarter of the year, when they sat at 5.4 weeks.

Cataract patients waited 45.9 weeks to have their cataracts removed at the end of 2010, longer than the target of 37.3 weeks set for the third quarter of the health authority's fiscal year (which ends March 31). Ontario cataract patients wait 14.9 weeks. Alberta's cataract waits were the worst of 10 provinces, according to a 2009 Canadian Institute for Health Information report.

Patients needing new hips waited 42.9 weeks for surgery, more than 10 weeks longer than the quarterly target of 30.3 weeks and the March 31 target of 28 weeks.

  14. I suppose this is my day to facetiously reply, but what's your problem? People like me have been arguing with Canadians for years, their FREE HC is not free and someday your going to run out of those that have been paying the bills. Unfortunately, those Canadians that come to the US, for a host of reasons for many HC problems, will have no place to go, well maybe Cuba.

Your article say's HC cost in 2009 was 19% of GDP (well above the US) and will increase 6.4% each year for 20 years (think that's an extremely low estimate) and your probably looking at an annual 50% of GDP cost by 2031, which of course is not possible to sustain. The solution is really simple, privatize HC and let market forces dictate cost, not a Government Bureaucracy wanting only to maintain their own jobs.

As for old people being the cause, sure that must be considered, but do most Canadians really spend their retirement in Canada. I've known quite a few that lived in Florida, Arizona or California and I don't think they run back to Canada for their annual check up. I'm not really up to date on your welfare system, but from a couple illegal immigrant reports, I understand they feel it as generous or more so, than the US system and that could be adjusted. Other than killing those old people off (death panels), there's not much else you could do....IMO.

The health care cost is exploding in US too and more Canadians make trips to see a doctor and check ups do to free health care than the US. And there are some crappy insurance companies that do not want to cover you health care cost so people do not go see doctor to the problem is too late and you get more medical problems and cost more.

The reason health care cost is exploding in US and Canada is mostly 4 reason .

    1. aging population

    2. the inventions of CT scan and MRI that was not there before.

    3. Doctors and staff over pay .

    4. CEO`s and board of directors that make $1,000,000 a year.

The reason countries like USSR and Cuba can have such high number of Doctors and staff per population is simple .

1.They did not have alot of the CT scan and MRI

2.no CEO`s and board of directors has it all run by communist party

3.Doctors and staff got little pay

Has for other countries like South America ,Asia ,Africa and Central America their health care when comes technology, care and treatment is 50 years or more behind the US . And the doctors and staff get little pay.
