  1. I would guess that they're old stop lines in case of invasion. But that is a complete guess.
  2. The ground radar does not provide any location information to pilots. The satellite comma system does not provide any location information to pilots. The aircraft's GPS system does not require a turned on transponder to work. Aircraft also have inertial location systems which track location based on how the aircraft has moved. Direction is even easier they have inertial compass system with magnetic compass backups.
  3. The type of transponder in use here (ads-b) broadcasts the aircrafts position every 2 ish second. These messages are used by SSR for aircraft tracking and have a range of about 300 km. (Note the transponder type is inferred from the aircraft tracking websites that tracked the aircraft). The range is based on an aircraft at cruise height and is broadly line of sight. I'm surprised that this and the acars system can be tuned off.
  4. How about something simple like a cork layer, these temperatures are not that hot. The bottom of the thing being heated will still get hot though because the, even if the heatlamp only warms up the top of the thing that heat will get conducted to the bottom.
  5. Depending on how cool you want it and the ambient temperature a heat sink may be enough but I suspect you will need a active cooling (requires energy input) solution. The metal it's resting on is probably getting hot because it has a high thermal conductivity and is acting as a poor heat sink.
  6. Would something simple like a concrete slab do you? That's under 100 deg C? But heating stuff will always warm up unless you actively cool one side of it which might be better for what you want having read your latest post. Zeroth law of thermodynamics.

  12. ! Moderator Note Dovada's new atomic model posts removed to a new thread http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/60646-dovadas-new-atomic-model/
  13. No, it doesn't work like that in qm I'm afraid.
  14. No, not motion. They actually try and remove all motion from the system as it makes the clock less accurate.
  15. Not got much time currently. But a quick point. Modern atomic clocks use oscillations in energy levels. These do not involve motion.
  16. What mobile device are you using? I'll check with mine later (a desire running android).
  17. Dumber has also been banned for the above reason.
  18. Hey to all the new people, hope you're enjoying the boards and don't be scared to post!
  19. There is also a new content in the last 24h link at the bottom of the main forum page.
  20. Two things about the mobile site, the pictures at the tops of the posts are profile pictures not avatars, and there doesn't seem to be a way of viewing your notifications.
  21. Some slightly dull fiction book... and A Treatise on electricity and magnetism by James Clerk Maxwell, it's quite interesting if a little odd "whatever electricity turns out to be" is probably my favorite quote.
  22. Welcome one and all since my last general hello... I'd suggest the speculations forum.
  23. Welcome to all the new people since my last general hello I hope you enjoy it here.
  24. R is a GNU implementaion of S. It's mostly a statistical programming language, it's very powerful, and you can easily integrate in c and Fortran code... http://www.r-project.org/
