Shifting light wavelengths with dyes...
Hi. Please no not merge to a similar thread. A laser beam travels trough air, enters glass, then a rhodamine+ dye, changing its green wavelength to yellow : If the dye is a thin layer, should the green beam pass trough it as yellow ? Or, if the dye is 'sandwiched' between glass 'slides' , would it exit the second glass as yellow ? Will it be coherent and monochromatic ?

Crystals that multiply the frequency of light passing trough them...
Good day. What is the name(s) of crystals that divide or multiply the wavelength on incident light, and light exits them at doubled (or halved) wavelength ? Any examples beyond DPSS lasers ?

Canadian term for 'U.S. house' ?
Hi all. One of those things partially in retina, unable to remember ... Once in a documentary of perhaps 30 years ago, heard the term Canadians use or used to refer to a U.S. dwelling, -read 'American'- style of houses, or type of construction, or some building process, or particular shape, or characteristic... Never heard that word before nor after. Cannot remember 🤔 Any clues please ? It is not necesarily a despective or favorable word, and not a common used word either but seemed genuine. Like replacing the word 'American' in the phrase "American house" from Canadian slang -or not slang- ! term.

What is the technical term for direct connection ?
Hi. I have NO router, no WiFi at home. My 'smart' phone does have that feature which is not enabled now, I never use or need it... Once I enabled such and printed a document from my phone direct to my WiFi printer. What is the correct term for that connection ? Words like peer-to-peer ; ad-hoc ? something else ? Stores sell a WiFi door-bell camera with intercom that can use a 'smart' phone to see who is at the door and even dialog with. What should I look for in the specifications/instructions terminology wording to know if its WiFi connection is direct door-bell-to-phone or needs a router at home ?

Interacting with RS485 into a USB adapter... am lost in space.
Hi. Am the flag bearer of computer idiots. Can hardly find how to explain what I want : A device with a RS485 connection is plugged to an USB port on my Linux laptop using an adapter : ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is there a standard generic set of instructions for RS485 communication that I need to have/load in the laptop to ask/command/get/interact/obtain reports ? I do not know how to interrogate the device to obtain its data. Is a 'special' set of commands needed ? Typed on some sort of 'terminal mode' console at the laptop ? The device is supposed to report Volts, Watts, Amperes, temperature, time,... This has nothing to do with internet, WiFi, servers... it is wired RS485 port to USB port, period. Yes, am that dumb, and need it guided/explained accordingly.

Is there a shining star of all crops ? [agriculture]
Good day. What single crop could be cultivated to provide humanity an emergency substantial and reasonably balanced diet by itself, as if critical climate changes prevented variety of foods to be produced some day ? Some root, tuber, grain, legumes, leaves, beans... ?

What is wrong in this planet ?
A century old collection of termites in San Francisco, Ripoffornia sells for $2 Million perhaps with a garage and a yard to have one tomato plant if lucky, for whoever has dormant $200K for initial payment and a loan of $1.8M meaning $11K monthly mortgage for every month of the next 30 years of your life... plus $2000 monthly property taxes to feed a herd of dolittle seat warmers keyboard massagers, plus monthly $200 maintenance if lucky, plus $100 monthly insurance (to benefit the lender) plus $100 monthly water plus $200 monthly electricity plus whatever am forgetting just to have a roof over your family. Similar for other major cities, also Europe... What salary allows such abuse ? What is left for fuel, car payments, food, medical, kids... ? How a plain person deals with this ? Any magicians here ? How do you do it ? Members of this forum with much higher knowledge, education, activity status than the general public.

Is the brain the only one asleep ?
Hello all. While sleeping; is there any other functions in a human that also go to 'sleep' ? Or is it only portions of the brain ? The production of cells, the healing processes that may be happening, the digestion, the growth, the decay, the activity of dozen of organs seem in permanent action... I would say vision, and to a certain level, smelling, tact, hearing are not alert/active. Tossing and turning in bed is not muscular sleep, is it ? Do those dozen of organs have their 'rest / vacation' time ? 🤔

Longer 'lasting' color...
Hello all. Noticed red vehicles and items fading their color coatings and rust surfacing earlier than in other colored coatings. Which metal roofing color should last longer from showing corrosion -for equal paints composition- ? -Image borrowed from web-

What's the major difference between cheap and expensive wine?
Once in ~2005, I bought a dozen bottles of wine imported from Argentina at a $0.99 store in San Leandro, California. Without being a connoisseur, found nothing wrong with it. I wish those would be still available. Would enjoy the most, to see fancy experts tasting wines with labels removed.

Anti-tarnishing something...
If the something-impregnaterd felt rings were absorbing something, they would alter their appearance or degrade their effect. It does not happen, lasting years. A battery in the engine compartment is very ventilated and a battery never gets warm. The point of leak yes, may be the poles-to-case joint. As I read somewhere, the inhibiting chemical could be benzotriazole. Interestingly, ibuprofen could be effective.

Too many terms... are they meaning the same ?
Yes, and already made/burned the "repair" CD from Microsoft instructions with it. Is that all or I need to create other CDs with contents as different names suggest ? Or the "repair" one is also a 'reload' and a 'reinstall' and a 'setup' and an 'image' and a 'setup' and... ? That is the thread question, a bunch of names for the same use or for different uses each ? Do I need to create a "reinstall" CD too ? And a "image" too ? and a ... and a ... ?

Too many terms... are they meaning the same ?
Hi. Got a Windows 10 laptop, an OS am not familiar with for the last 17 years. Trying to ensure re-establish operation when something fails, in order to make a fixing compact disc, found the terms - rescue - install - repair - recovery - reload - image - restore - reinstall - setup - backup CDs. What does each does, or are they the same named different ? Which ones do I need to burn to be safe in the future ?
