  1. No, it doesn't defy evolution. No, we have a good understanding of the source of the energy. We seem to have a pattern here. Perhaps you need to study science a bit more. It might help you better understand why many atheists here take the position they do.
  2. Don't confuse having the right to sue with actually winning a suit. I have the right to sue YOU for child support for the children my wife and I conceived, but that doesn't mean I'll win the suit.
  3. Appeals are automatic with the death penalty. The only way to have someone's conviction reviewed for other sentences is to request them, and unless you can show reason (such as new evidence) the appeal will be turned down. (These are generalities only; I'm sure there are certain situations that fall outside of what I've just said.)
  4. The appeals process is expensive, and the actual housing is more expensive. Also, they are rarely "completely" sure, as many people have been wrongly convicted and sentenced to death. They are only sure "beyond a reasonable doubt". If that.
  5. In the US, people sentenced to death are on death row for about 15 years. Certainly that should allow a reasonable chance to make amends.
  6. I can see that as being beneficial. Of course, allowing that to happen is not mutually exclusive with the death penalty.
  7. Are you giving them a chance to make amends for their own benefit, or for the benefit of the person who was wronged?
  8. Do you have a limit to the number of chances a person is given? For example, if they commit a murder and are given a second chance, then murder again, do they get another chance? Does that go on indefinitely?
  9. While reading through several articles I seem to have confused the aeolian ripples with the Giant Current Ripples created during the Missoula Floods. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_current_ripples
  10. Thanks! In the article you linked it mentions that "In reverse or inverse grading the bed coarsens upwards. This type of grading is relatively uncommon but is characteristic of sediments deposited by grain flow and debris flow.[1] It is also observed in eolian ripples. These deposition processes are examples of granular convection." Since eolian ripples were generated by the Missoula Floods, is it possible you are looking at the remains of one of those ripples, with the coarser material (your large boulder) sitting atop finer particles?
  11. What do you mean by 'drop out first'? (Just to be clear I have no expertise on this subject and so cannot add much. I just find it interesting.)
  12. Perhaps something like the Missoula Floods. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missoula_Floods http://columbiariverimages.com/Regions/Places/missoula_floods.html
  13. Why do you think that feelings of love, empathy, compassion, distress, despair, and happiness have nothing to do with survival?

    Donald Trump

Exactly. Reread your posts MigL. You are moving the goalposts.
  15. I really don't see how you can compare England to a gang of criminals during the Falklands incident. I didn't realize there might be a 'second phase' to a full-scale nuclear war.
  16. We should also keep in mind that an aircraft carrier should not be considered 'obsolete' simply because it can be defeated by a superior weapon. If that were the case, then the Kalashnikov assault weapon would be considered obsolete because it can be defeated by a fighter jet. Great Britain is much more likely to use its aircraft carrier against a foe like Argentina than it is to use it against China or Russia. Similarly, the current crop of Russian fighter jets may be obsolete compared to the US built f-22, but the Russian jets are doing well against Syrian rebels. I'm sure Russia is glad they did not mothball the su-24 simply because the United States could defeat it with superior weapons. While battleships in WWII may have been obsolete in naval battles, they certainly performed well when shelling Japanese held islands in the Pacific.
  17. Power projection is important whether we are in a conflict or not. I would guess power projection is used more often when there is not a conventional conflict. Carriers and their battle groups will never be obsolete due to the weapons of other countries, if we choose to ensure their survivability. Military innovation is very similar to evolution. If you develop a way to kill me, then I'll develop a way to survive. That is the way it has always been. If there is a way for a foreign military to take out an aircraft carrier at this time, then you can rest assured there is someone working hard to eliminate that threat. The use of carriers or their equivalent are needed whether you use drones or not. From where are you going to arm, launch, and maintain your drones if not from a carrier?
  18. ...and it participated in Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
  19. I don't think so. They encourage you to conceal the item by placing it in your shopping bag.
  20. I didn't see where this would have any impact at all on shoplifters. How do you see this sales model affecting them?
  21. I like the idea that Amazon is expanding in such a way that their customers no longer shop exclusively from a computer but now shop in a brick and mortar store, guaranteeing some human contact, no matter how brief it is. I also like that this shopping experience will allow me to minimize my time spent with strangers, and allow me to spend more time with family, colleagues, and friends.
  22. Just so we are on the same page here, would you be so kind as to tell me just what you believe my "position" to be? I'm curious what you found in my handful of posts on this subject that led you to conclude my position is grotesque. It would be helpful if you could cite specific examples.
