  1. Evil and good are both subjective terms.
  2. Well, content...but I would not class grammar and spelling as style. I don't think anybody is arguing that use of grammar on here must be perfect, it just needs to be at a suitable level so that an argument isn't muddied. But yes, you do get posts that are very elaborate and flowery in the use of English, where the content on the other hand is just b*llocks.
  3. I used google spell check, which you can install into the google tool bar for the above...hey presto. You'll find we don't make assumptions about somebodies intelligence, solely based on their grammatical and spelling skills, due to dyslexia or English being a second language et.c. Although my English is pretty sound, I still have spell check installed. What you need to understand though, is if you're going to present an argument in a science environment, these skills are beneficial in the clarity and coherencey of your points. If you're writing online, spelling really shouldn't be an issue, as per my example above. EDIT: Oops, several responses whilst I was typing mine.
  4. They started selling 'Relentless' at work quite recently, which (although I usually read the label) definitely gave me a *temporary boost...after having a can once a day for a few days. I scanned the ingredients, to find it has over *50g of sugar. I'm guessing, it's mainly the sugar content, more than anything else that's responsible for the 'pick me up.' I quite enjoy coffee, but this (anecdote, I know) is rocket fuel in comparison. However, I now have a sweet tooth, (I hardly ever eat chocolate) due to this sugar overload, so I'm trying hard to resist it.
  5. Right you are, Results 1 - 10 of about 34,160,000,000 for 1 OR 2 Results 1 - 10 of about 21,150,000,000 for 1 OR 2 OR 3 Results 1 - 10 of about 17,870,000,000 for 1 OR 2 OR 3 OR 4 Results 1 - 10 of about 26,950,000,000 for 2 OR 3 Results 1 - 10 of about 25,870,000,000 for 3 OR 4 Results 1 - 10 of about 25,710,000,000 for 4 OR 5 As John pointed out, the number of hits should increase, however we're seeing exactly the same pattern as you would with single integers and a reduction using combinations, albeit 1 OR 2 is a whopping 34,160,000,000 hits (as above.) But yes you do get higher results than straight integers.
  6. Nice, thanks for that d22k, I was wondering if the numbers were influenced by region, e.g using Google UK will have more than a number of hits from BBC 1, but there's something more simple going on, so thanks for the link chitrangda, zero results don't count, neither do letters i.e I could headbutt my keyboard and get a zero result from google, not particularly hard. Although you could cheat and come up with a unique result, simply by posting it, which would obviously equal 1.
  7. Sure, we used a Lumix FX35, with short exposure, as the moon obviously produces a lot of glare, plus taking a shot into an eye piece seems to make it worse.Tal-1 telescope, with a 25 mm super plossl for the first shot, and a 10 mm for the second IIRC.
  8. You're basically arguing that continuity is flawed, i.e if you did feel inclined to know the speed of the car at 1.12234557 s then yes, you could calculate it. Kinematics is not really the study of that, but I think I understand your argument. Infinite solutions crop up in maths all the time, it's only fairly recently (solely physics) where quantities such as time could be comprised of discrete units. That's out of my league, but I'm sure others on here know a thing or two about it, as a starting point...discrete time
  9. Albeit not intelligent life, but ho hum. Thanks all for the positive feedback, I'm going to give Saturn a go next time. One question, I've read that images can be enhanced with astro-photography by layering many images over the top of each other, but I'm confused how that works, I would of thought that would make the image more blurred. I'll try and find a link where this has been done. EDIT: http://www.astropix.com/HTML/J_DIGIT/PSALIGN.HTM right so this explains it...I'll need to look up noise to signal ratio, to understand why this is the case.
  10. Yes, it's stored in adipose tissue (fat) for up to a couple of months, and trace amounts will pass into the blood the metabolites of THC however, will stay in the hair for many months, hence hair drug testing. Merged post follows: Consecutive posts merged Zule beat me to it, I've read that THC is stored in fat for much longer than a week, do you have a reference for that at all ?
  11. Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but here's our (my housemate and I) first attempt at some shots of the Moon's surface. We have a Gorilla Pod, but it was too small to get a good angle...still, as a first attempt, not too shabby...(Optics are a Tal-1, and a Lumix) However, when I chose maximum resolution, we captured this image (see bottom picture)...I had no idea !!!
  12. Indeed, if they had any sense, they'd know there's a time and place for such activities i.e when they've finished their assignment, or just sat through an exam for example. But just to reiterate my point, do you think a coffee shop down the road would make any difference, will other students be more influenced by this, over the students who are already sneaking out for a few puffs ? You can probably guess, I'm fascinated by the topic, there are so many elements involved, and it's interesting seeing other people’s points of view on the subject. I'm not sure if all the points that are valid have been raised in this thread i.e I don't want to flog a dead horse, plus I'm at work (meaning I don't want to be scanning through opium production in Afghanistan, and cocaine production in South America) I don't want any raised eyebrows from technologies if they check my history. But I will come back with some figures, in the next few days, once I've finished my maths assignment (I'm very busy ATM.) I certainly don't want people to take my points on faith. Naturalistic fallacy, where do you think cocaine comes from, or opium. It makes no difference if the source of the drug is a plant, or synthesized in a lab...it's all natural.
  13. Sorry, but what ??? Perhaps you should inform us, and explain the infrastructure of the illegal drug trade, because I can assure you, you're way off the mark. The main source of so-called hard drugs are restricted to certain locations, and they have no trade in cannabis, in fact they're surviving on a poor farmers wage. Cannabis isn't some back bone, far from it...and I'll quite happily provide references. By the same token, you're assuming that concentrating on education, and bringing in the legalization of cannabis will have some knock on effect i.e the former will be negatively disrupted by the latter. My argument, is that the latter (use of cannabis), is already in effect. Providing better education is a bonus...if some people are morally grounded into not taking cannabis, and others have other obligations, or simply don't enjoy it, how are the two conflicting ? I just can't see this massive shift if it becomes legalized, when the effects of the substance, and it's ramifications are so well know. We're quite happy to make allowances for alcohol i.e oh, so many millions have been lost in man hours due to hangovers...ho hum, but yet people think this will get worse if cannabis is legalized. Of course it has detremental effects, depending on what your view is of detremental, (if what you say is true, we'll have a lot of good artists and musicians out there, post legalization.) But so do all sorts of other activities, that could be considered as counter productive. I can't prove my argument as a fact, but neither can you, and yes, I'm sure it's on the bottom rung of the ladder to what's important right now, but it will keep cropping up, and when's a good time when it'll be important ?
  14. Theories work on approximations, not data compression, and it just so happens that the approximations are becoming more and more accurate through refined mathematical models, and experiment. Air resistance is a good example of that in practice, there are some basic linear and quadratic models, but these don't work in certain conditions, so the model is refined...at very high velocities you get chaotic behaviour, so it's all to do with what model you use and in what situation. Scientific theories are literally waiting for new data, it's just some are so good, they stand strong up to the most extreme conditions e.g it takes the interior of a black hole before GR breaks down. Science is a data whore, and if some new measurements beg that a theory be stuck in the firing line, then so be it...it's a slow process before it gets accepted, but that's to be expected i.e rigor is key to improvements within science.
  15. That's about as succinct as you can get to describe a field (there will always be a unit with the value). However, here's some simple examples, which you can look up. Isotherms, which you can find on weather reports, are an example of a scalar field, being lines that connect the same temperature. So if you had a map of Ontario, with a number of wavy lines over the top (not crossing) each with it's own value, that would be an example of a scalar field. The same is true for pressure (isobars) which I'm sure you're already familiar with. A vector which has magnitude and direction, will therefore in this context be a field comprised of arrows. So take another map of Ontario, with arrows pointing in the direction of the wind stuck on top, every arrow gives you the direction and magnitude of the wind at that given point. So each arrow represents the winds velocity, at that particular point. EDIT: Thread belongs in general physics Mod note: moved
  16. Coulombs law describes the electrostatic force, and the hint is in the name, it only deals with static (ideal) situations i.e when the particles in the system are not moving, and the law describes the magnitude of the force between these charged particles. The electromagnetic force, deals with the above and a changing magnetic or electric field, e.g a change in a magnetic field induces a current and vice versa. That's the raw basics, but there's a lot more to the latter. EDIT: I was AFK, and didn't see the previous response. EDIT 2: This should be in general physics Mod note: Yes. Thread moved.
  17. There isn't anything you can do, but walk away in this instance. Having some bin bags (garbage bags) thrown at you, isn't really cause for retaliation...they're just being ignorant little pricks, trying to provoke a response. Responding, will be giving them what they want...and they'll either run off (most likely shouting abuse in the process) or try and up the stakes, by seeing what else they can get away with. Either way, it's not worth the hassle...so you took the sensible option. It's highly unlikely they'll want to sit down and discuss the situation rationally. Yes, it is frustrating feeling you're being intimidated, just walking down the street, and there's always lots of things that run through your mind, of what you wish you'd done at the time e.g (I wish I'd constructed that flamethrower, for just this occasion.) If it becomes a regular occurence, that's when it's worth taking action of some sort. This happend in our area, and the local community had had enough, so the problem was sorted. Rest easy, in that they may pick on the wrong person in the near future.
  18. I think a point that has been missed, is that if somebody feels the desire to try cannabis, they can, because it's so easy to get hold of, it's production is abundant. There won't be a massive shift in the amount of people using it, just because you can go to local coffee shop, and have a joint...because there are lots, and I mean lots of people already doing this in their own homes. Added to the fact, that an illegal substance is more exciting, and therefore enticing for somebody younger. Anyone serious about their education, and given they enjoy the odd high from time to time, will keep the use to a minimum...you can say exactly the same about alcohol. The revenue created from legalization, as well as money saved from policing, and prevention could be much better spent. I could even argue that, given the current economic climate, that it's a source for a boost we need right now, given that there won't be swathes of people rushing to their local cannabis outlet to give it a go, the stigma will still be there for people opposed, and the people who already use it are just going about their day.
  19. Oh dear, this thread makes no sense at all now, see OP. So, I'm going to type out that entire scenario again, and restate the question, and this time, not reprehensibly edit over the original example....<sigh>, so again... Having a fair amount of scientific knowledge has it's pros and cons. Not respectively, but for instance I used to love watching Horizon when I was younger. But, now I've gained a certain level of understanding of the subject, Horizon has become 'spot the flaw in the experiment show', and has made it impossible to sit back, relax, and enjoy. However, the upshot is that you can catch people out, if they feel inclined to show off down the pub for example. So here's what happened on a recent night out... A couple of mates and I, were sitting in the back of a club, chatting (sorry shouting) over a pint, when we were approached by a girl... Girl: Having a good night ? Us: Yeah, you ? (not in unison) Girl: Yeah, I have a Phd in energy So I just presumed she was drunk, gave her the benefit of the doubt...perhaps her area was in high energy physics. Me: Phd in....energy ? Girl: Yeah, energy transfer Me: I'm not sure I'm familiar with that field. Girl:(who starts making wavy, mysterious hand gestures) ya know, like the pure energy that connects everything, including us. It was just waffle that I heard, but it was certainly along those lines... Me: Errr, ok Girl: Yeah, amazing isn't it, Einsteins theory of evolution ! Me: (who's face has just dropped, beyond a safe dropping distance) you mean, Einstein's theory of relativity ? Girl: errrr...ummm, sorry So I started explaining the basics of SR, the invariance of C, and reference frames et.c however she was edging away. Later on in the night, if I stepped into another room in the club, and she saw me, she would run away. (it's not funny now I've typed it a second time.) So has anyone else (outside of the forums) been in a similar situation to cause humiliation, i.e when somebody claims this, that or the other, and you rip them a new excrement passage. Also, as I stated I'm really not trying to be egotistical here...it can happen with any field of knowledge, but it would be interesting to hear similar stories.
  20. Errr, I'm not sure if the OP even deserves to be labelled as a parody, and am I the only one who's completely baffled as to why gang culture was slipped in at the end...'in the commercial and political world'...what !?!
  21. She was....errr, no, I didn't find her particularly attractive. Oh, how fickle and shallow I am.
  22. The whole issue is getting very tiresome now, but yes it's not surprising, all the time it's kept illegal, it carries the same stigma associated with other illegal drugs...and therefore is subject to the scaremongering of the media, and so on and so forth. There are so many pros to legalization, a few examples raised by Phi, but there's now another twist happening in the UK. The import of cannabis has dropped massively in the UK...why ? Because people are growing it themselves, mainly due to the abundance of information available on the trusty tinternet, people can create exactly the right conditions for a very high and potent yield. This isn't just hydroponics set up in the loft, this is warehouses, and farms being used to cultivate cannabis. Guess who's hired to keep these crops in tip top shape ? Illegal immigrants, so we now have another problem added to the mix. I'm not sure if investigating and shutting down these establishments requires more policing hours and money than import, but it just illustrates that the law is always one step behind, and it will continue to be like this. So politicians really should stop worrying about this daft public image, and just legalize the fricking stuff already.
  23. Sorry, I just read this, and realized how daft it sounds, when there's a pseudoscience and speculations forum on here...'yes...on a daily basis yer fool.' Of course, what I meant, was outside of these wonderful forums.
  24. I use mathcad, and have exactly the same issue as ajb pointed out. Also, it's pointless using a math package unless you know what you're doing, for example, interpreting the results. As one example, you should be able to solve a 3 x 3 matrix by hand before you start using a math package to solve an n x n matrix.
  25. That must of been an incredibly large book, to prop up and double up as a tent. I don't have the luxury of a Uni brick library (just an on-line library), as a place to go and study. However I do hope they don't serve Kettle Chips at your library food outlet, being the noisiest, tooth debilitating snack I've encountered so far.
