I finally got some money together and decided I better spend it on something constructive before I blow it all on food. So after spending around 30 bucks and a few hours of assembly this is what I came up with. http://home.mchsi.com/~tflex101/mantle.htm I found the actual heating element on ebay for really really cheap, ended up costing around 17 bucks shipped. It's kinda old and junky looking but a new one would have cost 100+ bucks. For the controller I used a incandescent light dimmer, I wasn't sure if it would work or not, because the controllers usually used for these mantles are over a hundred bucks, but because the dimmer only cost around 6 bucks …

Hello everyone. Simple condensation does not happen : A bottle ¾ filled with water kept hot (~60°C). On top of it, another bottle upside down kept at ambient temperature, coupled neck to neck with adhesive tape, forming a shape sort of an hourglass. No condensation happens in the internal walls of the upside down top cool bottle, even after hours. Why ? What is missing ? How can condensation be achieved ? VERY easy to try and confirm by yourself ! Miguel

Let us consider a molecule of carbondioxide. This is a covalent compound where the valence electrons of the oxygen and carbon atoms are fulfilled. There are still 4 electrons for each oxygen atom in their outer shell. so,where do these electrons can revolve around thier orbit if the bonded electrons block thier path? ARE THOSE ELECTRONS IN THE OUTER ORBIT ACTUALLY REVOLVING? (I'VE TAKEN THE SIMPLE COMPOUND FOR EXAMPLE U CAN TAKE WHATEVER COMPOUND U WANT) clear my IGNORANCE.

Thought i would do a chem quiz (feeling nerdy): 50.00 mL of a solution of nickel bromide was treated with an excess of dimethylglyoxime solution. The precipitated Ni(DMG)2 was filtered off; 0.3177g was obtained. Calculate the concentration (molarity), of the nickel bromide solution. I will say when i see the correct answer.

We all know that solids, liquids and gasses are states of matter. i have two questions: 1. What exactly is plasma and is it a state of matter. I heard plasma was a 'soup' of electrons and atoms nucleus's. Is this correct. 2. In what state of matter is jelly classified as. The jelly that you eat.

Im having trouble setting up these word problems, i cant visualize it. Can you guys teach me how to do these 1. Calculate the molecular weight of a gas if 4.5L of the gas at 785 torrs and 23.5 Celcius weigh 13.5g. 2.) 0.453 mol of a gas confined to a 15.0L container exerts a pressure of 1.24atm on the walls of the container. What is the temperature of the gas? 3) 2.0 * 10^-5 g of hydrogen gas at 155 Celcius exert a pressure of 322.5 torr on the walls of a small cylindrical tube. What is the volume of the tube? 4) If 250mL of nitrogen are collected over water at 25 Celcius and 750 torr, what will the volume of the dry gas be at STP? 5) A certain gas…

I have a reaction nA + B <-> AnB + B <-> nAB. I believe n = 2. A is fluorescent and is quenched by B. I have done fluorescence and uv titrations. How can I prove the degree of complexation is first 2:1 and then 1:1. I've been loking at Job plots, but can't apply this two a two step process. Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

1)KMnO4+H2SO4+Na2SO3 -> Mn+2+SO4-2 2)KMnO4+NaOH+Na2SO3->Mn(OH)2+SO4-2 3)K2C2O4+H2SO4+Na2SO3->Cr+3 +SO4-2 4)K2C2O4+NaOH+ Na2SO3->CO4-2+SO4-2 5)K2CrO4+H2SO4+Na2SO3->Cr+3+SO4-2 6)K2CrO4+NaOH+Na2SO3->Cr2O7-2+SO4-2 Does anyone know how to balance these equations? I know you have to add some things from the left side to the right but i dont know what. Please help!

I was reading one of Asomov's many collection of essays of chemistry (Asimov of Chemistry, to be exact) and I thought of a few interesting questions I thought would be interesting to post First: The distance between gas molecules can be derived from many factors (you all know how to do this I'm sure). So, when the gas is frozen and becomes a solid at low temperatures, how is the atomic radii found. With all the molecules atracted to each other (usually attraction is the sharing of electrons or charge) how do chemists really know that the molecules are touching at just the outer shells? Second: If one were to find the atomic radii from Helium this way (describe…

I'm not sure whether this is biology or chemistry so i place it in both forums. could somebody please help me answer this question about the Gibbs Donnan equilibrium. We start with 10 Na ions and 10 Cl ions in each of the plasma and interstitial fluid compartments. Into the plasma compartment we add 60 negatively charged protein molecules together with 60 Na ions to maintain electrical neutrality. According to the Gibbs- Donnan equilibrium what is the final distribution of ions?

Howdy, I have a rather odd question I recently found a vial of a purplish chemical in my house. It is made up of water and some other chemical that is denser than water. Out of boredom i started playing with it. When some is left out to dry, the water evaporates leaving a liquid that does not evaporate (i thought it might be oil, but it is not oil soluble (i put it in some cooking oil, nothing happened)) Again out of boredom i put a drop in some peach colored hair gel. The gel turned gray and became runny. The chemical smells a little rancid. I assume it is some kind of mack up because it appeared after a bunch of girls did their make up in my ho…
