i attempted this question believing that is was naoh and na(s) had the same properties and would react simliarly to the ester. i was found to be wrong. why?

Are there any compounds that we can't synthesize, or that are grossly inefficient to synthesize using normal means? Given access to high technology, and plentiful resources, are there any compounds that would still need to be extracted, and could not be synthesized? Please speculate about the characteristics of such compounds. That is, what makes a compound hard to synthesize?

why are alcohols so important. we need to study a whole chapter about it. i know the following facts 1) it is used to make ethanol a clean fuel that in theory would not increase the amount of carbon emissions in the atmosphere. 2)it is used to make ethene under the presence of Al203 catalyst which lowers the activation energy for this dehydration to take place. 3) it is used to make ester with the help of carboxylic acid. 4) it is used to make carbonyl compounds by its oxidation by k2cr2o7. it turns yellow green. 5) it is used halogenoalkenes by nucleophilic substitution reaction. 6) it can even react with sodium for where sodium attacks the electron dense oxygen at…

Just curious, what are some good topics in organic chemistry to write a 10 page research paper about? I have a technical communication class this semester, and I was planning on writing about fullerene and it's application in creating nanotubes. I figured it was a good topic that could relate to the real world in its application for creating synthetic materials. Among a few other ideas I had, I thought this was the best topic. What are some good topics to write a paper about?

Hey guys I am hoping that someone here who has a strong organic background can help me out. Quant, phys chem, no problems ... i got some question on the procedure for synthesis of 1-phenylethanol 1) In the synthesis of 1-phenylethanol, we poured acetophenone into methanol. Next, we prep a solution of methanol, sodium methoxide, and sodium borohydride (in that order). so why we need to used sodium methoxide?? is it bcz its a strong nucleophilic and base for substitation ?? 2) why we need to used vacuum distillaton for purification of 1-phenylethanol, not the normal distillation... Thanks!

In the case of glucose, D and L glucose are enantiomers. So can one say that all D and L sugars (of the same sugar molecule) are enantiomers of each other? Just out of curiosity, why is it that if a sugar is D and it becomes L, all of the chiral centers flip-- is this just nature at work? I ask because if one is distinguishing b/c alpha and beta of the same sugar molecule, it is deemed as an anomer (which is an epimer which is a diastereomer)? What makes the penultimate so special that the whole molecule becomes an enantiomer instead of just an epimer? Does this have to do with how the straight chain becomes a ring structure? Thank you.

Hello, everyone. There was an in-class organic chemistry quiz I took recently and my professor posted the answers online. I have been going through the quiz to understand the problems and the answers to them (my professor also explained the answers), but I am still confused about a few of them. I have attached a picture of part of the quiz (It would be too difficult/confusing to explain without it) and was hoping someone could help me understand the 4 blanks that appear before the word "Hz." In other words, can someone please help explain why those answers are what they are? I followed a certain formula, but seem to be unable to obtain the answer on the key. Those are the…

Okay so heres the question To prepare 25 ml of a 50 mM solution of the ester methyl ethanoate, what volume of methyl ethanoate (in µl) should be dissolved in water methyl ethanoate density = 0.93 g/ml so far what i've done is: 50 mM = 0.05 M 1 ml of methyl ethanoate = 0.93g 25 ml of methyl ethanoate = 23.25g RMM of methyl ethanoate: 74 Moles = 23.25/74 = 0.314 Volumme (L/dm^3) = 0.314/0.05 = 2.68 L which can't be right My chemistry isnt great so if anyone has any advice?

Hello everyone, First of all, I'm new on this forum, so let me introduce myself. I am a french translator testing my skills in various domains of engineering and scientific translation. I am thus interested in science and languages, as well as in translation and pedagogy. I translate from french to english. Here is a short text I chose to test my skills. The source language is french. It is the translation of the summary of a paper in the field of organic chemistry. You can find the original text here : http://www.iquesta.com/Memoires-Theses/Chimie/Telecharger-Memoire-synthese-diastereoselective-d-un-precurseur-de-l-acide-hydroxypipecolique-la-hydroxypiperidin…

  15. People, Need help badly- have a 15% w/v aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol. Upon the usual addition of a bactericide benzalkonium chloride (100mls/42L) it cross linked (turned very cloudy). Now, it appears homogeneously cloudy, unless its just in suspension. The solution is sooooo viscous too. Might have to dump it unless I can filter it out, but my limited knowledge of organic says it might not be able to be. Advice apprciated. Oh- I assume the cross linking is because the preservative- benzalkonium chloride may be old, but not sure if that stuff even has an expiration date......Ive used it for many years - the same lot with no problems. Now, BOOM- cros…

I'm just finishing up Organic Chemistry 1 this semester. I have a firm grasp on FT-IR Spectroscopy. The spectroscopy problem I have is proton NMR. We have done done work with Carbon13 NMR, and I don't think we will anytime during my undergrad years. I am able to identify peaks within the spectra if I know what the structure is, but what I'm still not sure about is how to identify unknown compounds given the spectra. Does anyone have any tips, I don't have any readily available spectra to show unfortunately. I understand the reactions well enough to know what products should be produced. Any help would be appreciated! -Evan

I am currently carrying out batch testing on several different solid organic wastes with regards to their potential methane yield using anaerobic digestion under mesophillic conditions. I want to remove the carbon dioxide from the gas that is being produced so that the sole methane fraction of the biogas can be measured directly (the batch testing is preliminary testing therefor don't need to remove any of the other gases contained in the biogas produced). The gas produced is being measured using a liquid displacement system and I hope to pass the gas through a chemical solution to remove the carbon dioxide before displacing the liquid to measure the volume of methane pro…

Hii all, I'm new here.. I came looking for you help.. I have a H NMR that I'm confused about.. My problem is the doublets and doublet of a doublet.. I hope someone can clarify for me what this NMR shows.. There are two seperate peaks, each attributed to 1H.. Would I call the first peak just a doublet or a doublet of a doublet..? To me it looks like a doublet of a doublet, however when I google doublet of doublets, it confuses me.. So would you write these up like this 3.36(dd, 1H, Aliph H), 3.73(dd, 1H, Alip H)?? Help would be veryy highly appreciated..!
