NB: Muck this up and your computer wont work. This is written for winXP. NB2: This is a hidden system file found here: c:\boot.ini if you cannot see it then you cannot see either hidden or system or both files. Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options... > View tab and find the 2 options (one for hidden, one for "protected operating system files"). This post is how to make a custom boot screen: If you create a 640 x 480, 16-bit, .bmp image and name it boot.bmp and place it in c:\windows\ and then add /bootlogo /noguiboot to the end of the boot.ini file then instead of seeing the winXP loading screen you'll see your 16-bit image. Full explanation of…

And everytime when I try to hybernate, it give me this error: And hybernated with a pop up window saying hybernated. So I am like, that program is screwing my PC up. So I uninstall it. Now it woul…

Me again, back so soon indeed. I swear, I take one step forward and I take a quarter-step back... eventually it'll all work out... I hope. Maybe I should just give up this computer. Anyway, new error, now that I've got both my power source replaced and my hard drive in order--my DVD drive's having some issues. It's a Memorex internal 16X double-layer DVD+/-RW drive, meaning it can read, write, and burn nearly all CDs and DVDs. In theory. In practice, it does its burning job fine, and it can read CDs and DVD movies fine. It's got an issue reading pure data DVDs, though. I recently bought Command & Conquer: The First Decade, and it comes on DVD-ROM. The comp…

I am having some trouble with another computer here. It is exactly like the one I am on now, same software and such..but of course, it is not this computer. Windows XP Home Edition SP2 Since sometime around noon yesterday, whenever the computer is turned on/restarted, just before it gets to the logon screen, a blue screen comes up with the following error: STOP: c000021a (Fatal System Error) The Windows Logon Process System process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x0000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down. I have searched for quite some time now and found no information on this error on Windows XP. Somewhat interesting is …

I bought an Acomdata E5 SATA External Hard Drive a while back (I think it was right after Christmas). It's a 250gig hard drive that I use for all my games and music: interesting side note, 250 gigs makes it about 5 times the combined disk space of my two other hard drives. Anyway... about halfway through March I got and installed Linux. I now successfully dual-boot Linux and Windows, with Linux installed on my secondary 15gig hard drive. Ever since I installed Linux, however, my Acomdata drive hasn't been recognized. Linux recognizes both my primary (windows C:/) drive and secondary (windows D:/ drive, Linux hda), as well as my floppy, CD-ROM, and DVD+/-RW drives…

My girlfriend's computer (Win 98) is having some problems and I haven't, as of yet, been able to fix them. I was wondering if anyone here could shed some light. So, my gf's little brother was playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein when the computer froze. After he restarted, the resolution was really low and the colors were screwy. Also, the mouse doesn't work, it doesn't appear on screen at all. We tried fixing the colors via the control panel, but the computer is 'ignoring' our changes. The mouse works in safe mode, so I figured it might be a virus. I ran several virus/spyware checkers (AVG, ad-blocker, Spybot S&D) but to no avail. Does…

Hi Just yesterday, my windows media player, in play mode, does not output the the movie frames, where the movie screen on the media player remains blank with only the audio output. I ve tried with all media file types like mpg, wmv, asf... but all the same thing happens. I have even recovered the whole laptop for this with a recovery CD, but same thing happens. However, the monitor looks and responses normal though... Looks not like a hardware problem. The strange thing is that other types of media player do not work as well. I thought this might be that my media files were corrupted, but I tried them on another computer but they played fine. T…

Dear computer geniuses /programmers, Over the past few years I have written some programs in my current job that I would like to try selling online through a company and website I created http://www.dtmstech.com. The first program I’m going to try to sell is called DTMS Issue Control. It’s basically a simple helpdesk application. I’m offering the program as a 30-day free trial, and am selling license keys to activate the software on a per-installation basis. The reason I’m coming here to you guys, is because I’m not completely confident the licensing system I have created is completely “hack proof” (or even slightly hack proof for that matter!). I’m looking for …

Hey, I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. The black plastic tab in one of my USB ports broke exposing the wire prongs which then proceeded to get bent. I was able to straighten out the prongs, but the port is no longer working. Originally it gave me a power surge message, now it just doesn't respond. What would it entail to replace a USB port on my computer? If it's pretty complicated, do you guys have any other suggestions as to how to fix this problem? Thanks

I´m currently trying out Java. So far, my impressions are mixed but tending towards "it´s nice". However, there is one issue that bugs me a bit: I have not yet found out how to convert a double to a string with a reasonable formatting. The toString()-metod and the string = ""+double trick format 1.3322676295501878E-15 to 1.332267 which really is more than useless (in fact, I encoutered the problem because I was looking for a bug - I knew the value had to be O(10^-10) or smaller). I have already taken a small look at google and to my surprise, I found a lot of classes converting doubles to strings. But I didn´t find what I was looking for: A native Java method (by tha…

I have been given a task to come up with 4 different types of validation which I can implement into a database made in MS Access 2000. I know there are multiple ways of entering a validation rule (ie. Field Size or Input Mask) but for this task I need to do it in a specific way using the Validation Rule box, as shown in red below: I have only been able to think/make 3 such validation rules: #) Type of check --- Validation Rule 1) Presence check --- Is Not Null 2) Range check --- Between 1 And 10 3) Length check --- Like "?????" I can think of a few 4th different type of check, a picture/format check for example, the kind of thing you would normally …

This is the wierdest thing. It seems like I'm not connected to the Interent because websites dont load and ping cant resove hosts. But when this happens I'm still connected to AIM/Yahoo, I can talk to people, and people can access my website. It's like I cant make new connections but old connections are still active. I don't know why. THere's not need to reset the cable modem, all I have to do is reset the router.

Through experimentation (and some help from this site months ago) I can write programs from formulas to save time, and using the book I got a pixal to move around the screen using the arrows using the getkey function. I seem to have gotten as far as I can by myself. 1) Can you write a program that factors a trinomial (or other polonomials). I have no idea how this program could work. Or can you that can f.o.i.l. for you? 2) Games. The pixel that I could move around with the arrow keys didn't work very well. After a while I'd get the error message "memory." I ran out of memory to move around one pixel? How do games work so that they do not use up too much me…

I was wondering if it was possible to connect 2 computers, one using an internet connection to the others LAN point. Basically i want to use my old comp as an external hard drive for my new comp. they both have USB ports, but linking them via these requires software i dont want to have to buy. Only one of them has a LAN port, and the other only has an internet connection.

Hello, i have a big problem, hopefully someone has an idea of what to do. ok here is what happened, first the system i am working on had a virus and it infected the wininet.dll file which could not be cleaned, or deleted. after reading some forums i found a solution to rename the file in safe mode and then copy a clean version of the file from a site they listed. i did this and now when i try and start the computer i get the following error: Stop: c000021a {fatal system error} the windows login process system process terminated unexpectedly which a status of 0x0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down it just stays on this blue scre…

OK, I just replaced my 64MB ram card with a 512MB one, thus taking my total ram from 192MB up to 638MB... quite a difference, and my computer seems alot zippier as a result. However, I notice that the pagefile is still being used as much as it was before the upgrade. Curoiouse, I turned pagefiling off and rebooted, only to find the page file STILL being used as much as it was before... So, does anyone know why, with all the extra juicy ram, the taskmanager still shows between 200 and 300MB of my page file being used? espescially when pagefiling was turned off?

i created a birthday card on paint and I have some flower shaped things on the top corner of the page but I want to move them to the bottom corner of the page, is there a way I can "move" them without erasing the image and drawing it again since these are very tedious pictures to draw. are there other programs like adobe photoshop that can do this? Thankyou.

I have a certain co-worker whose job is to distribute photos to many different people. She uses Kodak EasyShare Galleries to get these photos to everyone and I was wondering if anyone knows of an easy way to use this horrible service. The photos are displayed in a javascript slideshow: var curPhotoIdx = 0; var handledCommentId = 0; var albumIndex = 0; var albSeqNo; if (curPhotoIdx > 0 && connectionSpeed == CONNECTION_SPEED_DIALUP) albSeqNo = curPhotoIdx - 1; else albSeqNo = 0; photos[albSeqNo] = new Photo('922289682305', 'http://images.kodakgallery.com/servlet/Images/photos1414/3/82/96/.../9/922289682305_0_BG.jpg?a=5', '', 640, 480, 944808301105, false,…
