I have a few different partitions, one for windows, one for linux, and one to share (fat32). Is there a way to ghost the whole hard drive so I could put it back the way it is now at anytime? How exactly does a ghost image work?

Ok, my computer is a relatively old desktop, a Dell Dimension 4300 (about 5 years old at this point). I'm considering upgrading it to allow my fiancee to play World of Warcraft and for me to use SecondLife, but I want some advice on whether it's actually feasible to drag this machine, kicking and screaming, into 2006. First, the system requirements/recommendations WoW: 800MHz (min) 1500MHz (rec) 512MB RAM (min) 1024 MB (rec) 32 MB 3D graphics card with Hardware Transform and Lighting, such as NVIDIA® GeForce™ 2 class card or above (min) 64 MB 3D graphics card with Hardware Transform and Lighting, such as NVIDIA® GeForce™ FX 5700 class card or above (rec) Sec…

I'm a bit annoyed at the moment as I just spent a week downloading a torrent to find it's in a wierd format that I don't know how to work. When I open up the file there's one BIN file that doesnt do much when I click on it, and a 'burn at once icon' which when I open and click 'write' it just says 'current project does not match inserted media'. Anyway i'm bored of clicking random things in the hope it will do something. Does anyone know how to play it?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me a good tip on what kind of software I should get to secure my computer against viruses and the like. I mean trojan horses, hackers, spammail and what have you - I guess a normal virus scanner won't do all that. I would pwerfer if it could be dome without installing a gazillion separate programs, but really I just need to know what I can do.

A ISP said they'd throw in a public ip address. As I said in the irc room last night I lock a fundimental understanding of the internet (I swear quest said we'd get 4 megabits, never downloaded past 1.3 or ~170 kilobytes per second ). Anyway, what is a public ip address for and why does it sound so cool?

Hi guys! My roomate has an older computer I've assembled for her with everything on it (WinXP, Office, the works). It may not be the perfect computer, but it worked for a few weeks already quite well and smoothly. Today, however, the computer seemed to crash, and I can't figure out what to do. It's loading the BIOS, and then - right after it - it states that "CD ROM BOOT FALURE". I don't know why it would even look in the CD rom, I set it up to boot from the HDD. But I tried, regardless, to put WinXP bootable in the CD Rom, it reads it, and writes the same problem. It won't load from the HDD either.. I tried to check the hardware cables, and everything se…

I have a program where you type in the start and end times of a trip, and supposing that the trip should take 25% less time, it displays the new end time. The new end time is split between hours and minutes in integer form. If the hours has only one digit (or the minutes) then the time will only be in 3 digits (or two if both are only one digit). And this does not work with hhmm military time (the kind I am using). So, simply put, can I get an integer to display always as a two digit number in C++? Tell me if you have no idea what I'm talking about, here's the code: EDIT: You know what happens when no one responds... I'll figure it out eventually.…

Hey guys, I need help getting started programming in java. Does anyone have any suggestions as to (most importantly) a program I can use to write any program and compile it in java? And then secondary is a website that might be very useful for explaining the basics to programming? Don't worry, I have already googled the second question and found something decent but I'm asking if there are suggestions as to which is the best to learn from. The first, I have no idea where to start. I don't exactly understand what the advantage/disadvantage to each program is and google doesn't really help me solve that either. I'm looking for as much help getting started in java p…

  9. I built a new computer recently and it works fine, but I've run into a couple of interesting situations. They haven't gotten in my way as yet, it's just a bit curious. Mostly, it has to do with my RAM. I have 3 gigs in here (my motherboard supports up to 4 1-gig sticks, I've only got the three), but the computer only recognizes 2.50 GBs of it. Some other software I have that gives system info (in particular, my battery backup's software that'll shutdown the computer before the power outage nabs it) recognizes only 2 gigs. I'm thinking it's partially because of the way the motherboard is set up: the user manual tells where to install the RAM, but it doesn't offer a…

I have a situation where I've got a menu and a small picture area at the top of the menu. In the old design I've got a standard javascript that changes the mouse button and the small picture when the mouse rolls over the button. I'd like to see if I can get rid of all the javascript, though, and just use CSS for the rollovers. I know roughly how to do the CSS rollovers, so the buttons themselves will change. But I can't quite figure out a way to get the picture to change in the small picture area above the menu. Any suggestions would be appreciated. It's not a huge problem if I have to continue to use the javascript rollover method, I'm basically just wonderin…

Hello all. Here's the issue. Recently i moved to south africa and took my computer with me. When i opened it up, i found the motherboard and graphic card were at the bottom of the case. So i rebuilt the system and when i started it up lo and behold, the monitor turned off. So, i restarted into safe mode. Now the monitor remained on, but only displays 4 bit colour. Any solutions? Cheers lazerfazer

I bought a new CDRW a while ago, and wavelab fails to recognize it, I'm pretty good with wavelab, and I've tried everything. So I'm having to burn my cd's through media player, which is ridiculously slow, and a pain in the butt. So does anybody know of any half decent free cd burning software...I tried one called burrrrrn, but as soon as all the tracks are queued up and ready to put on cd, it comes up with an error and shuts down...meh.

I want to add a sketch on a binary tree-structure to a scientific publication. I´d like to draw the sketch more or less directly in postscript of pdf format so that I don´t have to worry about how it looks when it is rescaled later. The functions I´d need are - Drawing a circle - Draving lines connecting them - A few dots would be nice but are not nessecary - Rectangles would be nice, too - Text and greek letters Does anyone by chance know a good freeware WYSIWYG editor that I can use to do that? Freeware is important, easy installation also is (so preferrably a windows prog), WYSIWYG is also nessecary because otherwise I could as well use the TeX drawmode.

Hi guys, I'm programming a new web application with PHP/mySQL and I need to connect the table ID to a specific field and later on fetch that field with a list of ID numbers. The tblUsers (containing all the user data) has a field called "uFriends" where all the user's chosen friends IDs are listed. At first, I just put them in the field as "text" with commas between multiple ids, but that cause a problem; When I want to show how many people chose a user to be in their 'friends' list, and use the SQL query: Query="SELECT * FROM tblUsers where uFriends LIKE '".$UserID."';"; I =wanted= to pick all the people that have the user id in their friends l…

I've got a Thinkpad T23 laptop, about a year or two old, and for some reason, the battery just isn't charging. I've checked my outlets, they work perfectly fine, and my AC adapter is plugged in properly. I think I only have about 30 minutes left before it runs out. My battery isn't charging. Help?

  20. I have Windows Server 2003 installed on it's own personal HD and to boot it I've always physically moved the master cord from my main OS HD to the Windows HD, everything cable select. I have 3 hard drives but only two would be hooked up at a time. But now I've decided to permanently hook it up on the same cord as my CD/DVD burner. It works fine with the motherboard, I can mount the partition and everything (which means I can get native DLLs for wine off 2003 and not my XP computer across the network... ), but I cant seem to get it to boot. I have a floppy with smart boot manager but it cant see it. My BIOS wont boot it. And grub has not been able to do it. Gr…

  21. I reinstalled windows (as needs to be done at least once a year) on my gaming machine (or my Half Life 2 machine ) because PC games need windows, I think. Anyway it's saying that it isn't a genuene copy of windows and won't let me update. What can cause this and how can I fix it? I'm calling microsoft after I try one more re-install and try to update again (only thing I can think of ). If I can't get it to work, people have told me that Red Hat and Suse will play PC games, is it hard to do that? Can I use wine to play them in Ubuntu and have all the mods and stuff work?

My family's trying to get me to help them (I'm the most computer-literate among them) and they've run into a problem I've never heard of before. Their monitor is displaying the screen sideways, as in, a 90 degree turn. They actually have it laying on its side so they can read from it. It's a relatively new monitor (flat panel) attached to a relatively new computer (came together, about a year old), though the computer's been giving them plenty of problems, too. I'm thinking it's either a monitor or a video card issue, and I'm more willing to think video card in this instance because I don't think a monitor can simply mis-interpret like that. I would tell them to u…
