Help!!! My wife and I have fruit flies infesting our house! I've been told they like fruit left out on the counter and empty fruit or pop cans that have not been washed. We're now rinsing our cans when we're done and throwing them into the recycle in the closet. As for fruit, we only leave bananas out (is this enough?). Even if this is helping, how do we get rid of them?

Hi everyone, I'm curiuos: does anyone know how many enzymes humans have and what they do? This has just been one of those curiosities for a while, I have heared of quie a few but I'm shure there are many, many more Also, are most of these common to different species? I would imagine that some would be the same but others would not be there and ones that humans don't have instead Cheers, Ryan Jones

I don't particularly fancy fruit very much, nor do I enjoy drinking water unless I am truly thirsty to the point of dehydration. I would much prefer to drink several litres of fruit juice per day. Would this be adequate to no longer have to drink water or eat fruit? Would it have any negative effects on my health? I felt this was the most appropriate forum, please advise me if this is not true.

I was just wondering if anyone could please tell me how and/or link me to websites that tell me how cells can be induced to grow and divide in vitro. I keep looking online but I haven't found any articles/websites where it actually explains why it's possible and the process of it. thanks. -dixy

Hey everyone i've got a quick question as i need ideas for a project i am doing. I'm currently designing a unit of work for my computers in learning course at University. This project requires me to use certain applications to explore a topic and effectively use these applications to enhance learning. The topic i'm doing is in the science field and its all about life cycles and is somewhat focusing on lifecycles that involve metamorphosis but it is not limited to this. I have ideas for my other applications such as multimedia, slideshows, internet etc but one of the applications i have to use are Spreadsheets, either Microsoft Excel or Access. I'm stuck right now on …

I don't know if this research has been discussed at this forum yet. If not, it may be interesting to check out. the paper was published in a peer reviewed journal---Human Nature---in 2002. the abstract is here: http://www.intercult.su.se/cgi-bin/public?action=search&text=ghirlanda Chickens prefer beautiful humans Ghirlanda, Stefano and Jansson, Liselotte and Enquist, Magnus Human Nature 13, 383-389 (2002) Abstract: We trained chickens to react to an average human female face but not to an average male face (or vice-versa). In a subsequent test, the animals showed preferences for faces consistent with human sexual preferences (obtained from univers…

OK, I volunteered to present a paper next week in journal club and I told them I would do it on some sort of prion disease (CWD, madcow etc...) Maybe one of you guys can suggest a good paper for me to present...recent, average length, and interesting? Any help would be appreciated. GSS (grad school sucks) Edit: P.S. it needs to be molecularly based

We all know that human brain depends on glucose for only energy storage. Then, what if a body is completely lack of glucose, can energy supplied from fats or proteins support the functioning of his brain?

Hello, I was watching a documentary house repairs. There was one point in the programme where the host explained what happened to the house. The house was used as a marajuana grow ops. And I don't remember what it was called. But the walls of the house walls, especially corners, was infested with these things. That is why the house needed repairs and purging. These guys had like chemicals masks and stuff. Here are my questions: 1. What are those thing growing on the wall!? I know, I know, probably no one else saw the programme here. But in general, if plants are kept indoor at such scale, something will eventually happen to the walls. Such as th…

Every year our school measures the height of every student. Honestly, I was the shortest in my class since I was 12. a friend of mine used to be taller than me. And now we are both 16, but he is 8 cm shorter than me. When we exchange our health card, I see that his height bearly increase after the age of 14. I am just curious, isn't boy supposed to grow until 16? normally? despite the gene?? his father is about 171, and he is only 161, just abit taller than his mum. And he looks so thin, he is only 44 KG. Is there any possible factor?

I have a marine bacteria with a big skew towards A/T (70%). Maybe someone has an idea why such a skey could be evolved. (And assume that it is not because of the different number of nitrogen molecules needed in each type of connections). Thank you very much.

If there is an experiment that is performed in which plant 1 is supplied with normal carbon dioxide but with water that contains radioactive oxygen atoms and plant 2 is supplied with normal water but with carbon dioxide that contains radioactive oxygen atoms, which plant would you expect to produce readioactive sugars, and which plant would you expect to produce radioactive oxygen gas? Also, each plant is allowed to perform photosynthesis. I know this has to do with the two steps of photosynthesis but I can figure out exact how. One plant begins with CO2 and the other with H2O so I would probably say Plant 1 would produce radioactive sugars and Plant 2 would pro…

I was thinking about this the other day and I wonder what other people think. So far, the only life we've encountered is that which is based on DNA. But DNA is just a melocular structure. Why could there not be other molecular structures, similar in complexity and reproductability, that end up supporting macroscopic structures that exhibit complex and intellegent interactions with their environment such that they mimic life as we know it? These molecular structures need not be possible here on Earth, but supposing they could form on other planets with a completely different environment (which might not be habitable by DNA based lifeforms), such planets could host "lif…

I remember that fairly recently there was news of a frozen T-Rex skeleton found with an actual skin sample still on the bones. As far as I udnerstand, it's DNA strcture was not complete, therefore rendering it "unconeable". Although, with so many advancements in the field of cloning, it may even be possible to splice alligator/crocodile or even turtle DNA into the current sample and effectively create a hyrbid T-Rex if this iat all possible. Does anyone think that we will be seeing this in our future? The ice caps are melting, and we will be finding quite a bit of interesting fossils under them that should be very well preserved. Hell, we could even bring…

I'm trying to put together a study guide for my students at Siphs (social bookmark) and I'm looking for journal references that discuss or review various metabolic pathways (aerobic, anaerobic, chemotrophic, etc). If you know of any good reviews, would you mind listing them or adding them to the social bookmark I'm creating? here's the link: metabolism social bookmark Thanks.

I know that intercourse between relatives increases the chance of having a child with down syndrome, but when the relatives have no trace or any history of down syndrome, then the chance of having a child with down syndrome would simply depend on a mutation, not heredity, correct? I know that a tribe in India interbreeds and it has no history of down syndrome, so interbreeding in this tribe doesnt affect the chance of down sydrome? Can someone also explain to me how interbreeding affects the chance of having a son with down syndrome?
