I was sitting in my greenhouse tending my plants when it started to rain, I have a corugated PVC roof, so you can imagine how loud it sounds during a good downpour a thought occured as it started to rain drop at a time and then gradualy more and more until it was impossible to hear the lightening monitor. at what point from tap tap tap, to the full roar of white noise, is the transition made? when does it cease to be individual tapping sounds?

What is the maximum temperature a kiln dried piece of clay can take without any faults? What is the firing process to get the clay to withstand the temperature in the first question? How can I prevent faults in clay before the firing process? Thanks guys

I know only a few things about common batteries (Cs, Ds, AAs, etc), so I need some help here. Besides providing an electrochemical source of electrons, what I do know is that: 1) they seem to be made from some pretty common materials, 2) they cost an awful lot of money, 3) they don't last very long, 4) they tend to "brown-out" toward the end rather than giving a steady charge and then just quitting. The only conspiracy theories I usually believe in are marketing ones. Are batteries overpriced for the materials used? Is there a way to make them drain at a constant rate so you don't throw them away with a bit of charge left (it's particularly annoying with flashl…

Ch and J obviously sound different somehow, but when i say them i cant figure out what my tounge is doing differently. I wanted to know cause i'm making a language, and i want to know the base of the sounds. Also, what are some other sounds not used in the english language? OK i guess that is a huge range of possibilities, any good sites that document these possibilites?

I have a question for the meterologists: Yesterday afternoon (in West Virginia USA), we had the strangest rain and I do not understand how it occurred. There were only wispy cirrus clouds in an otherwise clear and blue sky. The sun was shining quite nicely and the temperature was in the upper 70s. We had four separate occurrences of rain falling straight down, three were very heavy falls and lasted about 1/2 hour each, and the fourth was lighter and lasted about 10 minutes. The raindrops looked quite flakey and there was almost no sound of rain. Anyone have any ideas what caused this? Thanks.

As part of my work, I am looking into possible future discoveries/advancements which may prove pivotal in the near future of mankind. To this end I would appreciate any ( and I mean any) ideas or guesses, any of you have, about the changing face of science in the next 100 years. This could include the discoveries/advancements themselves, their political, economic or social influence or anything else which could be considered a landmark in human development. All responses, no matter how humble, would be gratefully received.

Hi if someone could help me with this stuff it would be really appreciated because I just can't get it. First of all, you know the Coroilos Effect thing? And how it makes wind in the Northern Hemisphere go right and the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere? Why does just crossing 0 degrees latitude make the wind go the opposite way? And also, how come the West Coast never gets hurricanes whereas it's a yearly occurence on the East Coast?

To some of you who dont know what are hypercanes here is a short anatomy : As the name suggests, hypercanes are hurricanes gone badder than it already is. It forms under extreme conditions though; when water stretching out for at least thirty miles in diameter is superheated by an asteroid impact, massive underwater eruptions, or extreme global warming side-effects. The probable temperature of the water has to be at least 120 degrees farenheit. The extreme heat will form like a hurricane except the fact that the heat from the water climbs up and tries to cool, but cools off at a very high altitude. A hypercane is one third the diameter of a normal hurricane and maybe …

I know that I'm probably the only one here who's actually in Anthropology, and this question / response will be better if presented to someone who's studying Linguistic Anthropology, but I want to give it a shot anyway. Keeping a language pure(just work with me here): ie: no slang, no mix-ins of other languages 'popular' words, etc, is there a limit that will eventually be reached when writing a song? Meaning, taking say the (British)English(to appease the many members here ), can a society produce unique word combination with an equally unique musical combination? Just one further clarification: Songs with different word structures but similar notes/tones/m…

It is found that the gravity force is about 9.8m/s2 It is usually omit the air resistance when we calculate the air resistance. One day, I asked myself how long does it take from jumping from the top of the building to the ground. And I did a bad calculation, only some seconds. I believed that it's wrong and I go to ask for information here

My last thread here warrants this one. I find myself in a state with mixed feelings about these two journals. Both are excellent and very reputable, but a dual subscription is not likely(least not in my case or not now), even with a student's discount - especially for a long term subscription(probably permanent). So, I need to subscribe to either one or the other and I need your opinions. Leaving out the political boundaries(Science - USA / Nature - UK), which journal do you think/ feel / know would provide me with what I need, more so, then the other. (Taking into account that both journals cover these things) With my field of study(Physical Anthropol…

Can someone please describe a simple (or kindof simple) process for obtaining magnetite in powder or rock, solid, whatever form. Is it true that if I take a magnet and move it around in dark sand from most beaches on the east coast of the U.S., I will have magnetite on the magnet? If so, wouldn't there be other magnetic metals on the magnet, like hematite, etc., and how could I purify this magnetite? Your imput will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hello forum; I am interested in learning more about the universe and science in general on my own time. I read A Brief History Of Time recently and I couldn't grasp for example the importance of spin particles. I went only as far as highschool physics. I am thinking maybe low level college texts. Are there any books you can recomend? Thank you.

Question for Sayonara or anyone else with lab access. I'm looking for a ballpark figure on how much does it cost your lab to extract, replicate and analyze a short section of DNA(mtDNA really) - not counting the man-hours? I have an idea for a project, but the Uni. deemed it inappropriate or at least not a good enough reason to proceed. I'm trying to see if it may be cheaper/easier to go with this company's services and or why will my Uni not allow me to use it's gear. (Even though a sample of 500 will get extremely expensive with these guys.)

Does anyone know about the conditions and mechanisms that would be involved in the formation and duration of a nuclear winter, of the kind caused by a massive impact? I am not interested in supposition, I am interested in things like: - Relationship between impact force and period taken for dust to fill the atmosphere, - Relationship between impact force and mass of dust/debris lifted, - The mass of dust required to block out all light from the sun, - Any information related to dissipation of the dust, - Information on surface and atmospheric conditions, E.G. how fast does the surface temperature of the planet drop, does convection in the upper atmosphere caus…

With regard to Wigner's paradox, that shows how mind can affect matter, how many of you believe that it is in fact mind that creates reality? And that the 'real' world does not actually exists.
