    1. I'm only an ungraduated Industrial Engineering student. 2. I'm really sorry for my bad English(it's not my mother's language). 3. Thank you for all comments. 4. The problem is : " We have developed the world until what we can see now. And also, we as human have developed our sciences. Newtonian Law's of mechanics is probably one of the most significant development(of course another is Einstein's, and many-many others). But, science is what we see from nature, isn't it? we can only describe it with many limitations as human being. The rule then applied. For any scientist's law or postulate, if no one could deny it with another rational explanation, then we must acce…

Does anyone know of any commercially available dyes which will not decolorize when exposed to sodium hypochlorite (found in household bleach)? I have searched (on the forums and on yahoo) for such a product, but have come up with absolutely nothing. Any help is most appreciated. -ilmari

Do you think plasma weaponry could be possible. We could use electromagnetic fields to control the direction and shape of the plama 'projectiles'. A good energy souce could help to ionise the air which could be used to fire. So there would be unlimited ammunition. Encrypted

Since most PC communities don't have a good answer to this, I thought I would ask a science forum instead. Static electricity can be very damaging to components, so we need to make sure we don't shock them with static electricity. Now, I have always equalised myself with the computer case by connecting a grounding strap from me to the case, so we are both at the same level of static charge. So, all the components already in the case would be at the same level too. So, I can touch my components all I want without shocking them. But, what if I want to install a new component that is free of static? I would be at the same potential as the case and the components insi…

What is the highest(heat) possible temperature? It's interesting that while the lowest possible temp has a value(absolute zero) even though it has never yet been reached. What about the highest or hottest temp possible. The biggest number I've seen is 100Million degrees C, or are there even higher temps?

Magnetohidrodynamic (MHD), what a name!!!! , what is the stage of this concept in the nowdays technology????, i mean, there are an MHD generator funtional in the world???, about the mhd propulsion all i know is the japanese experiment in an small ship, an the red october hunt movie , i remember reading an interesting concept in military propulsion, it used an high temperature steam jet in an helium chamber, but that experiment is reaaaaaaly old also i remember the hipotethical potasium use in the high temperature turbine gases inducing an plasma and control it with magnetic fields, so there are proyects in propulsion-generation involving MHD??????

i started this a while ago, in the news section, but it never appeared, so i'll try starting it here in the general science section and see what happens, if an admin could move this to the news thread, it would be appreciated. recently a new type of space craft lifted off, it was powered by an ion engine. it works by ionizing atoms or particles and then shooting them out the back of the vechile. whilsts this makes the vechile quite slow at acceleration, it can obtain very fast top speeds and may be the future for long distance travels in space. to reach the moon takes a normal rocket 3 days takes this ion powered rocket 14 or 15 months, depending on what…

Hey Ladies and Gents I have been reading this forum, for a year now, so I thought it’s about time to ask a couple of questions. As we know, we are living in scienefic age - it crops up everywhere from Physiology to every day life. I would like to ask you two questions:- 1 – Define the word science to you? 2 – Why is it important to learn Science? Thanks, Lou x

This has and still is a very long and old debate and I didn't see that this was covered here(yet), so what do you think(and in hopefully more than a few words): Tyrannosaurus Rex - aka - the Tyrant Lizard King. Predator or Scavenger? If for some reason, you might deem him/her(I like to give things a personality and 'It' simply does not work ) a Scavenger, why, and is he still a "Tyrant Lizard King"? This may be a wild shot as I haven't seen anyone here either contemplating about future professional expansion into Paleontology or is currently studying it. But, what do you think about the rest of the Tyrannasauria's(Family group in which T-Rex belongs)? …

We drive around in vehicles in which we are usually the sole occupant. These cars are rediculously heavy when compared with our own weight. The accidents that occur on the road point out the obvious abundance of force involved in even moderate speed collisions. With all the new materials technology coming out doesn't it make sense that someone seriously considers making lighter vehicles. A lighter vehicle would require less force to accelerate and be able to stop in much shorter distance making them safer. Seeing as it requires less force to accelerate the feasablity of an electric engine(which would also be considerably lighter) is increased. Along with severly redu…

I just did a bit of thinking, and came up with something: with today's technology, you could theoretically create a (less capable) version of the Enterprise. Here is how it would work: Propulsion: I know that with today's technology, you really can't make warp drive or whatever. But part of it is possible. You have several fission reactors powering the ship. These also power giant electromagnets which suck up all the atoms floating around in space. These are heated up and blasted out the back, like a rocket. Some of the gases could be used for maneuvering, also. You could get to maybe half light speed in a year or so, but you really wouldn't have the ability to do…

I have recently taken an interest in white tea, which is from the same plant as green and black tea but only the new buds are taken. This means that the tea contains more polyphenols and antioxidants etc. I began to wonder just how much more antioxidants white tea contians compared to its other counterparts. After looking it up on the internet I became rather confused, no-one seems to have the same answer; some say only a tiny margin more (although never usually by the same amount), the majority of sources say it has 3x the antioxidants than green tea (which is considerably more potent than black tea itself), and a few say that it has the same amount! i'm more i…

Scientism, Webster and Modern Science. ------------------------------------------ It shakes and saddens me to find that the present Webster definition of "scientism" is, scientifically, a distinct regression from the 1965 Collegiate Webster definition. Here is my case : A) "Scientism" defined by the present Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, One entry found for scientism: noun 1 : methods and attitudes typical of or attributed to the natural scientist 2 : an exaggerated trust in the efficacy of the methods of natural science applied to all areas of investigation (as in philosophy, the social sciences , and the humanities) B) From my postings in…

Hi, From what i understand slicks of calm water are caused when ocean currents diverge. To facilitate a study of marine phylogeography, I need to know how stable slicks are both in time and space, ie are they in a predictable location over geological time and from year to year. Also does anyone have any idea where to find maps covering the s.e asia and s.w pacific regions that detail ocean currents and possible locations of slicks. Being new to this particular field, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I dunno if anybody had a chance to see the set(let alone buy it), but the idea is very intriguing. However, my question is, since they include sample elements(including the radioactive one/s), what about the gasses? since there's no picture on their site, I guess that I'll look like an empty bottle then, or is there a way to stain these things? http://www.element-collection.com/ and more specifically this is what i'm talking about: http://www.element-collection.com/index2.htm

"unless you made a white noise pocket around the tesla coil hat would work but to keep and just around the coil im not sure but that would work well you would use the power from it to power the white noise thus stoping the roaring sound from hurting your ears but then teres also the fact that an airplain just might get fryed by the eltro field of the coil >&…

Ok we have all this technology crap today. Our discoveries have come at exponential rates, while technology of all history before the industrial revolution basically stayed the same for thousands of years until someone came up with something like the printing press. Except this doesn't exactly apply to the pyramids, which we still aren't sure how the hell they got there, and dont have any fricken idea how to duplicate it. But now that its taken us thousands of years we know how its done. Well I myself dont know how to make computers, or make the machine that makes computers, but i'm sure someone does. Maybe they could teach me. Anyway, the idea is, if you knew how…

I read an article in Popular Mechanics a few years ago. It had this idea. What do you think of it? You'd have a submarine who's hull is made of concrete. Yes, concrete. It's supposed to withstand greater depths (when it's a foot thick) and it's supposed to be cheaper than a steel hull of the same strength. The idea is to have a concrete submarine that will float out and sink onto the seafloor, and just wait for months until someone goes overhead. Then you vertically launch a torpedo at them. To get to its station, it would need to float. A concrete sub with a hull this thick probably wouldn't float very well, so you'd have turbines mounted vertically to hold it up.…

Hi there! My father had just told me this yesterday. He said that he wanted to know why this happens, and said that you guys would know. So, here goes nothing: When people are trained into loading aircrafts with weird goods e.g. acids, mercury etc. , they are taught that they should NOT load a coffin with the dead body inside with a dog. It is for sure, that when the flight lands, the dog would go mad. This is always so. Even though the coffin is sealed, air-tight, the dog would go mad. Why does this happen?
