  1. Kepler kept a diary and on 15 May 1618 he realized the first algebraic relation between distance and time (beyond simple proportionality) that I think anyone ever discovered. it is simple and brilliant, now called his "third law". In the most basic terms it says MULTIPLY THE DISTANCE BY ITS OWN SQUARE ROOT to get the orbit period. so if some planet is FOUR times as far from sun as we are then (multiply 4 by the square root of 4 and get 8) it takes EIGHT years to go around and if some planet is NINE times as far from sun as we are then (multiply 9 by the square root of 9 and get 27) it takes TWENTYSEVEN years to go around Greeks knew about squares and c…

  2. Data suggests that the field strength was relatively stable between 1590 and 1840. Kinda smacks around the Barnes/YEC claim of a smoothly decaying field as evidence of a young earth, and points to the danger of irresponsibly extrapolating your data.

I was recently reading in psychology class about Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. According to the Wikipedia article this theory suggests that Humans can have more than one type of intelligence. Specifically : 1 Verbal-linguistic 2 Logical-mathematical 3 Visual-spatial 4 Kinesthetic 5 Auditory 6 Interpersonal Communication 7 Intrapersonal Communication I'd like to hear some comments on this if you will. The address for the Wikipedia article is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_intelligence

  5. This is acommunity idea as a branch off from this thread. The idea is to make a list of between 10 and 15 basic science questions any HS graduate should know the answer to. If you have any ideas of what should be included please post them here... at the end we can then compare our final results with those presented in the link given by the other thread Cheers, Ryan Jones

We could put a civilization under the Enceladus ice. http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/images/image-details.cfm?imageID=2026 It would not need nuclear fuel to run. All you need to run a powerplant is two heat reservoirs at different temperatures call them HI and LO and the efficiency of the powerplant is limited by the ratio (HI - LO)/HI In the diagram you see heat reservoirs of liquid water at 273 K and ice at 77K think about the theoretical efficiency at which those two reservoirs could be used (273 - 77)/273 it is a high efficiency, like 70 percent the diagram of Enceladus subsurface also shows hot rock at temperature …

I have a question. Suppose that we have two nuclear devises of equal power. The first explodes 300 metres over the surface and the other many miles away in the surface. Which explosion will be responsible for the bigger pollution of the environment? Why? I have hear that this that will expode in the surface will be responsible for about 10 times bigger pollution from the other. Is it true? Why? Thank you.

Yesterday one of my friends told me that some science people had discovered a perfect empty square inside the Ayers Rock, and of course they had no seriously chance to explain this phenomenon. He read it in a International science magazine, he say. Anyone who can give me an article or just tell me if this is true or not? Another thing which is connected with the empty square in Ayers Rock should be a testement of something called "the pain profet" or something similiar to that. I have tried to search out the Internet with many different way of writing this, but can't find anything. I'll hope some of you may help me.

  19. I really need an article in a scientific journal. In fact, I've access to "all" the volumes of this journal for its start, "Evolutionary Ecology", but some numbers are missing. Evolutionary Ecology, 1989, Volume 3, Number 2 and 3 are missing from the electronic version (on SpringerLinks). Also, I've looked at the library of my university and of all the biggest universities in my province (even McGill), those 2 number are always missing, I've even contacted the author of the article, and he don't have it.

I would like to make or buy an elecromagnet I need it to fill roughly thease requirement's: be in the range of 200g to 1kg in what it can pick up Be 6 to 30 cm long and Be tube shaped Be hollow so stuff can be placed inside the tube Be a reasonable price considering I am just buying it to experiment not to start a buisness. I say roughly because sercing with google, ebay and wiki only reveals ones that are way off in all of thease aspects so ones which are just way off in some of thease aspects will probbebly do. :¬)

  22. Started by DucoNihilum,

Could someone explain this to me? I was freezing water bottles for a few hours (4 or so), and picked a water bottle up out of the freezer. It was clear; there was NO ice in it whatsoever. As I was walking to my room, I noticed the entire center of it suddenly froze. The ice was not hard, it was slushy. It came almost instantly, but you could notice a top to bottom movement. It was not pressurized, and it is generic spring water. The bottle was never opened. A video is available here. http://dnpen.com/water.avi Could someone please explain what exactly happened here, how it happened, etc?

I have this theory on how we can immitate our eyes' to make a 3-D camera. The problem is I have no knowledge on films. I need a method to test out my theory. I need a capturing device. Can any one help me with instant films? I need to know how this film works and is there a way to use this film without the camera or do I need the camera to develop the film?

Is listening to your car stereo at a lower volume but with the windows rolled up worse for your ears than listening to it louder but with the windows rolled down? I always notice that when I roll the windows I have to turn the stereo up louder in order to hear it. No surprise really. However, does turning it up louder put more stress on my ears, or is the noise supressed more because much of it is escaping out of the car instead of bouncing around on the windows?
