Space shuttle Endeavour roared off Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center on a spectacular tower of smoke and flames. The STS-126 mission is an extremely ambitious undertaking, highlighting four spacewalks and delivering the heaviest payload in shuttle history. Cool night launch!

My questions and ideas stem from sci-fi fantasy, specifically the Warhammer 40k Universe. In that universe there are genetically engineered super soldiers called "Space Marines". These soldiers are all clad in Powered Armor that is self contained/powered and capable of receiving enormous amounts of abuse without failing. The armor is constructed from a fictional substance called 'Ceramite'. After a little research into ceramic composites i happened upon the U.S. Military's mock up of a powered armor system they termed a "personal combat vehicle". After a little more research into exo-skeleton design it became apparent to me that the main problem with exo-skeleton/pow…

I am a stundent finishing my doctor's degree (in science) at Harvard. One night I was studing for an exam in my dorm when an idea hit me. It was random yes but I was thinking about how after I'd parked my car tonight I just fell, got a little dizzy for about a second, and then I was fine. My new theory explains all those random trips or times when you feel dizzy for only a moment and then it is over. Instentaneous reversals of gravity. Maybe I'm a lunatic, maybe a genius, who knows, who even cares, just take a moment to let this all sink in. So short, there is no time for it to effect anything other than humans and animals. Please respond to this and tell me if I am a g…

Well, I'm only really interested in science because I keep on thinking up theories. Then I want to see if they have been tested, then I'll proboably never figure out because I would mostly have to spend bajillions of dollars to test it. But here are some sci-fi things and my theories for them, and why I think it's possible or not. I THINK IS POSSIBLE- Lazer Beams This is warfare, but I do have a theory for this, but it leads to something else impossible. After I saw the movie "War of the Worlds" I wondered how the lazer beams could be real. Well, I know this too is likely impossible, but- what if we condensed protons to something like a bullet? would that be wha…

uh.. okay.. I'd love to see the actual research that led to this, but I was wondering what you guys thought on this, based on the many many failed experiments thus far.. http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/10/21/magnet-depression.html did they prove it right? Anyone has any more info on this? The actual research made, or the results? ~moo

Last year while taking AP chemistry I was all decided that I wanted to be a chemist. Now I'm taking AP biology, and I'm having second thoughts about my choice. I went to a lecture series during the summer where they had biologists talking about things like evolution and their research, and hearing all their stories about studying and collecting specimens in exotic places really got me going. I've always been very interested in both subjects, and I'm just so torn. This mainly stems from a fear that biology may not be a practical field to get a job in. I don't want to a doctor or pharmacist, so I don't know what kind of job a chemistry degree would get. Lets say I …

What is your favorite experimental "mishap"? Mine would have to be the time I decided to drill a hole in my potato cannon to see if the added oxygen concentration would have an effect on the firing distance. I forgot to point the hole away from me. ouch.

I had linked this in my blog, but thought it might generate some discussion here. Over at Ideas We do ten experiments. A scientist observes the results, constructs a theory consistent with them, and uses it to predict the results of the next ten. We do them and the results fit his predictions. A second scientist now constructs a theory consistent with the results of all twenty experiments. The two theories give different predictions for the next experiment. Which do we believe? Why?

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) - Mysteriously snuffed out candles, weird sensations and shivers down the spine may not be due to the presence of ghosts in haunted houses but to very low frequency sound that is inaudible to humans. http://asia.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=scienceNews&storyID=3401200

Because if you were to time travel, you would end up in space because the earth is constantly moving, meaning you will stay in the same relative spot in space, thus the earth could be somewhere else in the suns orbit, leaving you stranded. I just realized that title makes no sense, it should say "Time travel will leave you stranded"

I prepose a challenge. You must prepose a mechanism for or design or make or both or all 3 for an item of clothing that can be inverted (turned inside out) more than 2 times in sequence before returning to its original state. For example: State 1 Invert State 2 Invert State 3 Invert State 1 etc... Additional cookies will be given for more States up to a maximun of 10. Examples of clothing could be a long or short sleaved t-shirt, a flease, a jumper, a coat or a shirt. The item could outwardly appear to be eather be the same every time or diffrent on each invertion.

In terms of scientific and technological achievement, which of the two countries do you think has done a better job? Most of you would probably automatically think of Japan and its fancy robotics programs, cars, Maglev train, the envisioned space elevator, katana sword and countless other examples, but the true question really is; is China really that much behind, or is it ahead and why? That's something I'd like to know.

I am curious as to why modern science has become so heavily reliant upon a mathematical, reductionist approach in explaining observable/natural phenomena (there are exceptions, of course, including game theory, sociology, and macroeconomics). It seems that we have become addicted to explaining nature by disassembling it, rather than trying to understand how the parts influence each other in a higher-order, dynamic fashion. There is a place for reductionism in science, yet is there not also a place for emergence (in particular, strong emergence) and holism? There is a level of disdain for explanations that speak of strong emergence or holism that borders on vi…

For my physics class, I have to do a project using the experimental design process, and so I'm testing whether or not Regular Tide, Tide with Bleach or Tide with Baking Soda will work better at removing tough stains from white clothing. My question for you is: What would you use if you were trying to remove a tough stain from a white shirt?

What am I missing here? This graph clearly shows that the earth is currently at the coldest it has ever been and the CO2 levels don't correlate with global temperatures nearly as much as people are worried about. It also shows that we are very due for a much larger temperature rise than anyone is talking about. Both humans and animals will adapt to the temperature when the earth returns to its apparently more normal hotter temperature. Human civilization may be a different story. Can anyone fill me in? What is the global warming, humans are doing it, fuss all about? If this graph is correct, it really doesn't look like we have a chance of stopping i…
