I am new to biology and have been reading about HeLa cells. I understand they were cancer cells and had assumed cancer cells were kind of function less, why is it the case that they can still be infected with such viruses? I am supposed to write about why HeLa cells were useful for polio research and am reading that they 'responded' well to the virus under culture, this is just a side thought that I'd like to understand. I've possibly worded this badly but just wanted to know how 'active' exactly cancer cells are and why HeLa cells were ideal to use besides their ability to multiply quickly? Thank you in advance, I look forward to being enlightened!

I'm halfway through Calculus 1 and I've learned nothing. I've had some serious problems with motivation and energy this semester and have literally put ZERO time into studying. It's starting to worry me because I'm afraid I can't play catch up now. But I thought starting was better than not starting. So I would like it if someone could please get me on the right track to understanding what I'm doing. What is the point of calculus? (I understand it to be the mathematical study of change) What is a limit? What is a derivative? What does it mean to differentiate? What is an integral? What way of thinking will help me understand calculus better? Pe…

homework.pdf Hi I’m having trouble to devise an experiment to carry out this task: An insert is available containing a gene within it whose orientation and exact position with the insert are unknown. The gene contains a sequence for an important small peptide hormone. No DNA sequence info is available. The insert containing the peptide gene is a blunt end fragment of 1.8kb that was not generated with a restriction enzyme. The gene does not have a promoter and there is 6* his tag at the C-terminus of the open reading frame.

500 mL of 0.20 M solution of Ammonia is mixed with 500 mL of 0.20 M solution of HBr. What is the pH of the resulting solution of NH4Br? Ok, so I know the general math required. I'm just not sure how to proceed here. I'm using mostly the book provided and I'm not seeing an example of how to proceed. .20 M / 500 mL = .40 M NH3 + H2O <---> OH- + NH4+ HBr + H2O ---> H3O+ + Br- I know NH3 is a weak base, and HBr is a strong acid. How do I find the pH of a mixture of two different solutions. Seriously my book says nothing about this. Should I just use the formula for NH4Br? What would the k value of NH4Br be? Any help would be greatly ap…

Hello guys, I would like to know what does it mean by classical science? Is it dated back to the early civilization or during the 18th - 19th century? I have been browsing through the internet searching for journals and articles on it but I unable to find the one with good explanation. Is there any other term used to define classical science?. I hope someone can help to explain this to me. Thank you.

For a lab at school, we are given six substances which we have to separate and purify. The substances are benzoic acid, stearic acid, salt, sand, sawdust, and iron. We took out the iron with a magnet already, and got the sawdust out using a balloon and static electricity. However, my group is having trouble separating the rest of the mixture, and we only have one more class period to work on this lab. Also, we have many materials in class, but for safety reasons we cannot do something like heating alcohol (ethanol, acetone, etc.) at a high temp because of the flammability of the liquid. We really need some help and advice so we can complete the lab tomorrow!

  18. This is from a post lab question. The lab was really easy. Basically we were graphing the relation of the density (y axis) of salt water and the concentration of salt in water (x axis) As you can imagine our graph looks like a relatively straight slope with it's intercept at 1 g/ml In one part of the test we had to weigh the beaker + water + salt combination SPECIFICALLY before mixing and dissolving the salt. The post lab question essentially asks me why must we weight this combination before it becomes dissolved. I don't get that, the weight doesn't change, it's still the same. Would our graph be any different had we mixed it before weighi…

The problem is as follows: The density of dry air at 1.00 atm and 34.4 degrees Celsius is 1.15g/L. Calculate the composition of air (percent by mass) assuming that it contains only nitrogen and oxygen and behaves like an ideal gas. (Hint: First calculate the "molar mass" of air, then the mole fractions, and then the mass fractions of O2 and N2.) This is my first time posting here so if I'm breaking any rules please let me know. I'm supposed to answer this problem with the information given and not assuming any values. The answer in the book is O2: 28% and N2: 72% I have been stuck on this problem for the past few hours and nothing I do seems to get me to the correct…
