there is this science council in my school...and we need to submit a decent research proposal in oreder to enter it. this is supposedly to test one's research aptitude and all.... so, i'm just wondering if anyone out there has an idea for a research proposal, linked to the life sciences field.... one of my pals suggested researching on the gene gata5 in zebrafish. this gene produces the protein nkdx2.5 (i'm reciting this from memory, and am uncertain of the real name of the protein produced.however, i can ascertain that the gene is the actual one) the gene, when act6ivated, converts the cell into a heart cell. researchers have supposedly discovered that any cell that ha…

I'm doing questions on acids and bases, and I need to work out the pH of a mixture of sodium hydroxide and propanoic acid. I know the concentrations of each, and I know the number of moles of unreacted propanoic acid and its concentration. The question tells me to use the equation pH=pKa - log [acid]/[base] I'm ok til I get to the pKa bit, do I use the pKa of propanoic acid which I know to be 1.3x10-5, or do I use one for sodium propanoate? My chem teacher said to look up the appropriate pKa value but as I don't know which to use I'm a bit stuck, plus I can't find a pKa value for sodium propanoate anywhere. Someone help

Hi guys, I have to do a science project for my G/T Chemistry class (doesn't have to be involving chemistry) and my partner and I are going to test the effect that different substances have on radiowaves. Our only idea so far is to place things like "DefendAir Radio Shield" paint, metal, glass and other materials in front of a remote for a RC car and record the distances that the car travels. PLEASE, any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Those who post threads in here most are desperate and helpless, so am I. Recently I am working on Respiration Project + Assignment. The 1st project is working pyruvate molecules with radioactive carbon. Then they all incubated with all components of Krebs cycle long enough for 1 turn. Then I need to explain why the CO2 produced only one third of it is radioactive? So, I decide to start with Glycolysis Process until oxidative-decarboxylation of pyruvate because there's where the CO2 is released before entering Krebs Cycle, am I making a good start? My another question is imagine a starving cell reached the stage where every bit of its ATP was depleted and conver…

Perhaps some of you hagve heard of a program called G(ifted)T(alented), which is taken as an elective in highschool, for kids who excel in a certain subject. It involves a project that you and a mentor do over the coarse of a semester, or a full year. I want to do something in the sciences, particularly, something in microbiology, or genetics. Does anyone have any ideas for a project that would meet the following criteria- -Must have something to display at the end of the project -Must go above and beyond the current science coarse (next year, for me it will be H Chem 10) -Must be finished by the end of the school year (about 180+ days...keep in mind also that much…

Hi, I am having trouble understanding some things. Firstly why is Piebald trait related to a gene on an autosome and not an X chromosome? The mother is the carrier of the trait and the father is not, they have 4 children, 3 of them (2 sons and one daughter) are affected and 1 isn't (another daughter). What would be the chance be of one of the affected sons passing the trait down to his children? I worked it out to be 1 in 4 chance but I am not so sure now. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Hi I am working on balancing some equations in chemical reactions. I have worked hard, but am still stuck, and now feeling very unsure of myself. Could anyone see if these are done correctly, and if not, help me see what I am doing wrong here? (also how to do subscripts and superscripts here?) My equation in need of balancing: Al(OH)3 + H2SO4 ----> Al2(SO4)3 + H2O my answer: 2Al(OH)3 + 3H2SO4 ---> Al2(SO4)3 + 3H20 Is this correct? It looks like it to me, but am not sure. Any help GREATLY appreciated!
