Science Education

Colleges, grad programs, MCAT, GRE, courses, and other aspects of scientific education.

  1. I'm a junior now, but i know for sure that i want to be a high school biology teacher. i want to go to a school that is awesome in education, but specifically has science education. I live on long island, NY. i would like to go somewhere in the north east, preferably in NY, but thats not a must. I know Adelphi University is great for teaching, but its a little too close to home. Also, i love music, and thinking about minoring in music, or if science education doesn't work out, switching to music education.

  2. As of late, I've been noticing an odd trend. I'm not sure how popular it is or how much it's been coming into place, but for the past year or so, I've seen a trend with people attempting to become medical doctors. In general, I keep seeing people go for their Masters degree and then discuss how they want to get a medical degree. Does this make much sense to you? I guess in a monetary sense, in the US, it makes sense. Doctors get paid a lot. Eventually, the pay from being a MD will bring back net gains and so forth... But why go to the Masters program and then apply to the medical program? For instance, I came across a student from the University of Chicag…

I know this topic has been addressed before, but this question is in a different context. Is there any scientific reason that introducing either liquid oxygen or liquid nitrogen into the well-head of the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico would not temporarily seal the leak? I would think that the temperature of either substance would be cold enough to almost instantaneously freeze the oil and make it into a temporary cap, but I am not sure if the pressure at the depth of the well-head would alter the freezing point of the crude enough to make this unviable.

  5. I like to consider myself a science and math buff but I'm certainly no expert in any of the disciplines. Computer science is my bag. One common frustration for me is that in a learning environment I find that teachers or mentors stop talking in English and start talking in 'tech speak.' A saying I hold dear to my heart is from Einstein who said, "You do not really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother." I have found this to be very true. On the subjects I have mastered the most, I challenge myself to explain them in the most elementary way using only English that any lay person can understand. I find that trying to get the true…

  6. I'm trying to determine the number of science professors in America in relation to their perspective research fields, such as biology, chemistry, earth science, and more. I'm not having such an easy time, and I don't know if it's possible to even figure that out. I'm guessing there are about 1.5 million Ph.D holders currently in America. I'm guessing that perhaps 80% of them are agile, living in good condition, and mobile. Maybe more? Not sure. I get that number from reading that about 1% of America has Ph.D holders, so I suspect that's the adult population. From the SED, I suspect that a quarter of the Ph.D holders at most are biologists. One of the things I'…

  7. Whoops. I seem to have forgotten about the fact that I need to do the GREs. Yeah, that along with actually get 1 year of research experience, which doesn't seem to be happening any time soon. I'm in Chicago, so I've talked with my adviser and decided to check out the big universities in town for research experiences. Either way, I'm taking a full-time load in the summer. So, besides being bogged with studying for those courses, I'm also bogged with this idea of taking the GRE. I'm thinking I won't be able to devote much time to it. I think I have about three months before I have to take the thing. As such, that might indeed be enough time to actually study for it…

  8. Hey everyone. I'm an incoming freshman in college, and it's getting around the time where I'm supposed sign up for courses. I'm planning on double majoring no matter what, since it doesn't seem too complicated and is fairly common at my school. I figure I should probably have a good idea of what I'm going to be majoring in so I'm not stuck in college an extra semester trying to finish up courses I need because I didn't plan correctly. My main degree is more than likely going to be physics, and I'm in the honors program so it will be an honors degree, but I'm conflicted about the second. Just as a little background, I took Latin all four years of high school and loved…

So, I'm getting ready to start my senior year of high school, where I've signed up to take (on-level) chemistry and physics, as well as trig and calc (which isn't a class anymore so my teacher said he'd teach it to me after school) among other classes. I have an interest in neuroscience (research), theoretical physics, and cosmology. I haven't gotten my SAT scores back and I've yet to take the ACT. So, in my quest to see which field I would do best in, is there anything you guys can tell me about each? Like what college classes or books I should read to help me along? Thanks for your time. -Chris

So after asking just about everyone I know and searching online for some kind of useful advice I've gotten more answers than I know what to do with so I figured I'd ask here. I realize there was a thread similar to this about 5 years ago, but considering the changes in the job market I'd like to get a little more current advice... So here's my story. I have 3.4 GPA and majored in biochemistry. I've done research on several different topics ranging from RNA to med chem to adult stem cells over the last 3 years, so I have a really broad research background. So given my background I really want to go into the pharma/biotech industry. My dilemma is this. I've been acc…

I had an interview at my chosen College, for a course that involves Chemistry amongst other subjects such as Biology, Physics and Maths. I mentioned to the interviewer that i don't have much of an education in terms of the 4 above subjects but that i have been and will continue to, learn these subjects up to an above GCSE level, so as to get a head start before i start the college course in September. I'm hoping to go onto University to learn Biochemistry after finishing this College course. So therefore Chemistry and also Biology will be my main focus. The person interviewing me suggested that i only try to learn Chemistry up to GCSE level and not beyond as it may confl…

hi Ive been fascinated by this subject but find its wide variety of aspects make it difficult to understand just what Biophysics is about, am i right in thinking its split up in to two parts like theoretical and experimental ? is the theoretical part where all the mathematical modeling and computer simulation goes on ? like making predictions on how biological matter will behave and the experimental side where people focus on developing methods to "look inside" biological matter..how it all interacts , how its actually structured. i find the more experimental side appealing, but is that part of biophysics? or does that come under crystallography or micro…

  16. I'm looking for tips, guidance, advice, and dialog. In the next few months, I'm suppose to be thinking about applying for graduate programs. I'm aiming for a program that will offer me a Ph.D in Neuroscience. Simply said, I want a doctoral program. If it's a Ph.D in Biology (or something like that), but I've been doing neuroscience research all along, then I'm fine with that. I have yet to actually read through all the universities in the U.S. (I'm a U.S. resident) and other universities in different countries (might be interesting/fun). But here is my main question: What are the chances of actually getting into a Ph.D program these days? I have above a 3.5/4…

For those whom don't know what the SED reports are, here is a link. Basically, the SED reports discuss various statistics and general backgrounds of persons who earned their doctorates in the USA. Nonetheless, an interesting read if any foreigners would like to take a look. I'm reading the 2008 one, and I came across something I found unusual. I found that unusual, but I didn't find it unexpected. I believe it was a year or two ago when I started reading the SED reports and analyzing them. I came across discussion of how Asians supposedly are the second largest ethnic group with parents whom have bachelor degrees already, next to "multi-racial"... whatever…

  21. Background: I'm trying to get into a research lab. I'm an undergraduate. In general, I made the stupid stunt of jumping the gun too early. I recently told a professor I would be really interested in joining her lab. She suggested that as a neuroscience student that I look into some neighboring professors' labs. Nonetheless, I told her that I'm still interested. That doesn't necessary mean I have commit myself to the lab. Here's the professor and her lab: http://tigger.uic.edu/~jwiley/eyelab.html And here is the lab of a person she told me to look into: http://ccm.psych.uic.edu/People/Investigators/ragozzino.aspx I've seen that last pers…

Hi All, I've browsed the forums a bit and saw the community is both helpful and insightful, so I felt it wouldn't hurt to ask for some input. First, a little bit about me - I'm a sophomore at Arizona State, majoring in Medicinal Biochemistry. As of right now, I spent my first year and a half of college elucidating the secondary structure of proteins in spider silk using an array of physical chemistry methodologies (primarily NMR) and from my involvement in several projects, I've been published once in the ACS Journal of Biomacromolecues, a communications draft is being sent to Physics Review Letters regarding some Brillouin scattering work, and there are at leas…
