  2. I have a perception that even the medium level science learning materials in English world are censored. Many books written in English are difficult to learn from. Even though there are numerous science & maths textbooks and internet materials, few of them are workable. Book comments in amazon often talk about this: poor notation, missing important ideas... I mean it is a kind of knowledge and technology prohibition to the public. By overwhelming publication of the fake textbooks to suffocate the public's engineering power. I don't know the situation in other countries(languages). Are foreign languages more transparent to science & technology?

Hi ! I'm currently looking for a master's program in Science Communication or Science Education (and other similar names, with the same subject). I have found many programs in the UK, and some in Netherlands, but there is a small problem. They require reference letters from Professors, and I have almost no connection to any professors in my university. Do you know about similar programs in Europe, taught in English (very important), with lower requirements, but equally good ? Thanks

  4. Hello Science Forums, I'm a Freshmen in high school. I've always been interested in Science, but I always found it difficult to grasp. So I was just wondering; where do you BEGIN to grow a large understanding of the Earth around me? I've always been inspired by EVERYTHING you all do, and I'd like to help grow an ever expanding knowledge of the Earth just like most of you. So, I'll just ask in the form of my most common questions for people like you: > What books should I read to grasp a better understanding? > What should I focus more on and less on for these subjects? > What would be the best, more effective ways to stay informed of today's scientific …

I want to be a cosmologist, but I have a better chance of going into the NFL. I want to have a major or minor in physics. I could see myself being an engineer for a few years although a cosmologist forever. I hate math although I can learn it and even find my own ways to solve individual problems. I like physics because it gives you a physical representation of what happens through measurements and conversions plus the whole predictive models thing is pretty cool. I start college in the fall and am unsure If I should fallow my dream to be a cosmologist or if I should get ready for a long boring life of engineering.

Hi Everyone! I've enjoyed reading these forums for quite a while but have never felt the need to post before. I'm hoping to get a few opinions on if there is a preferred format for a CV in the field of Biology/Ecology? I'm working on writing mine up; I'm applying for a M.S./PhD RA position (if that makes a difference). Links to examples would be greatly appreciated too. Thank you.

hello guys , this is my first post on this website so go easy on me.... i am currently a 3rd year university student (undergrad) that is majoring in finance/marketing. After some internships and talking to people in the field of i-banking and trading i realized that this is not a type of field that i would like to stay in for the long term, the long hours added to a toxic environment would not make the money worth it. What i am planning to do is finish my finance degree , work for 5 years in finance (while studying computer science, mechanical engineering etc on the side) then head into robotics from a developper/entrepreneur angle as In the future i would like t…

  12. In both talking to professors and reading various threads here, I've repeatedly heard that the private sector is reluctant to hire PhDs because of the high salary that the degree usually commands. At the same time, I've heard anecdotes of employees with Masters in the hard sciences struggling to advance to positions with a good salary and a fair amount of responsibility. If I do not plan on staying in academia, is it necessary to earn a PhD to be a competitive candidate for well-paid positions in the private sector? I'm not keen on being a lab technician for eternity, but I'm also not looking to complete a PhD only to see my job prospects shrink outside of continued unive…

Hey guys! Here's a video of a great new concept that the Weizman Centre in Israel thought of- instead of lecturing to in the uni, where its the same place and same type of people who go there, they started lecturing in bars in major cities so anybody could come, listen and learn. If you guys are into science, especially science education- watch the video and maybe do something like this yourself.

Hey all, Some of you may have read my previous posts about attaining an education in physics. I had to put things on hold for a bit; moving, new baby, new job, you know the deal. I'm back and looking for some good introductory reading in physics to get the brain box buzzing again. I'm currently reading "The Elegant Universe" and "A Brief History of Time", supplementing with "Explaining Physics" by Stephen Pople. I've been recommended the "Feynman Lectures" as a start and good grounding and feelings on that would be much appreciated, as would any other suggestions. (nothing too academic or advanced as I am still learning and found such works as …

  17. I am pretty awful at math and didn't even place into pre-calc. I didn't take Trig in high school as there was a way to opt out. I didn't think I would go into a math oriented field like Computer Science until recently. Anyway, I placed into the pre-req for pre-calc which is college algebra, which I'm guessing goes over Trig as well. I'm sure I can retake it, study, and place into pre-calc, but I can't retake until the semester has already started so I wouldn't be able to take any math class this semester. So I'd probably end up taking Pre-calc in the spring semester either way. I want to take College Algebra because I want a more solid math foundation, but not if it's…

  19. Hi, My name is Cathy Ennis and I'm researching in the Games and Virtual Worlds group in Utrecht University. I am running a perceptual experiment at the moment and need some new volunteers! Details of the experiment: You will be asked to view a series of short animations of a 3D Character (30 in total). After viewing each animation, you will be asked to rate the presence of a number of emotions in the character's motions. Duration: It will depend on how long it takes you to answer each question, approx. 1 hour. I have added a new feature that allows you to save your progress and continue later if needed. Deadline: This experiment will be online until F…

Starting this next week, I will be involved with volunteering as an undergraduate student in a biomedical research facility. I will be helping out the postdoc around the lab on a project that he is currently working on and I will be primarily involved with helping out with basic tasks around the lab (making reagents, taking care of the mice in the lab, etc.) I have not done research before outside of the classroom and am nervous about what to expect, especially with making reagents. I don't have much confidence when it comes working in the lab as I have had a few not so great moments in taking Biology and O Chem lab last year. For anyone that's done research, I had a…

I'm unsure of what I want to do and need help deciding. physicist/cosmologist - I want to find out what dark energy is and see if my idea of an equation for gravity could be implemented Pro's - I love the physics concepts and am most interested in space. con's - I hate math, although I never saw a point to making conversions and now with physics I do. In the 5th grade I was put in an algebra class for middle school credit and got to leave early because I would finish my problems exceptionally faster than everyone else. I eventually got bored with math and faded away. I'm trying to respark my interest with physics but you have to know math to know phys…

  23. Started by Lin,

I'm a biology major, associates degree, took "a semester" off which turned into 4 years. I'm getting ready to return in the spring to get my BS, but I have some concerns. First off, my GPA is low. 2.7, to be exact, as I was quite unmotivated and had no goal while I was in school. I now know what I would like to do, which is study molluscs, specifically I'd love to study and research the evolution of nudibranchs. My question is this: Is this a realistic goal? I've been out of the game for so long that I'm really not even sure where to begin, aside from speaking with an adviser of course. Any advice would be wonderful.

I hope there are some pharmacists and pharmacologists on this site. I have narrowed my choice to the two but can't yet decide. I've herd pharmacology is better than pharmacy based on the type of work, but pharmacists get paid more. Which has the better prospects? I live in Canada, if that makes any difference.

Good, I can delete the post. While walking my dog, I realized a post that appears to be advertizing would be called spam, and I could be banned for spamming. Thanks CharonY for the effort of making something of good of this thread. This discussion is going better in another forum where the people come from a historical perspective. Personally, I think this new education technology is like putting wheels on a cart that has been dragged ever since the beginning of the twentieth century. I am very excited about the social ramifications, and the discussion I want isn't likely to happen here.
