Seen any good sculptures made from almonds lately? Note: no other nut-based sculptures may be discussed under threat of the ban-hammer!

The only one I have found so far has a very limited library. I'm looking for an itunes, but I really want mp3. I really don't want to have go through the trouble of using wine. Are there any good solution? This seems like way too much of a headache to have to put Linux users through.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=2cpNjyVvqK0 Watching this video I see a number of arguments lodged against evolution which I've also seen lodged against global warming. For example: - mainly advocated by the media - other scientists disagree and are being suppressed by the media - it's being pushed by a minority with an agenda - part of a larger push towards a particular ideology - no evidence - not a theory, just a model - early advocates were highly uncertain - examples have been put forward in the past which were incorrect - need to be skeptical and examine both sides of the argument (teach the controversy!) What do you think?

An interesting item in our local newspaper. Dr. Jim Flynn is emeritus professor at Otago University, and an expert on the interaction of class, race and IQ. While he argues vigorously that race is not a determinant of IQ, he says that class can be. He feels that, in a society that is socially mobile (meaning anyone with ability can rise into higher socio-economic levels), those of lower IQ remain in the 'lower' classes, while those of high IQ rise into higher socio-economic classes. He notes that women in the lower classes produce more babies than those in higher. The following figues relate to New Zealand, but are probably similar for other western coun…

There was something I was going to try based on things I learned in different science courses last school year but I'm not sure if I would be sure enough of what I'm doing, and there's some things I'd like to ask here first. My idea mixes electromagnetic induction with electrolysis of aqueous solutions, but that would mean I'm asking for things related to chemistry and things related to physics. What would be a good approach to take, should I ask these things separately in the separate boards or is another board (like general) a good place to put it?

That includes checking teh credentials of teh author and...and... o_o is a book considered reliable if the publication date is seven years from now (2000(? The book I am referring to is a medical book called Vaccination: the facts, the fears, the future by Gordon Ada. Are there any more factors that can decide whether a book is reliable?

I will illustrate it in a description, to let you guys get a sense of what is going on--which is bad--in Taiwan. Taiwan is a little island besides East coast of China. The citizens of Taiwan are getting more informations (relative to entertainment the most) from Western world. Although Mandarin and Taiwanese dialogue are two main spoken languages in Taiwan, people are thriving to study English. Now, there are some cultural discriminations going on in Taiwan: some folks who are obsessed in Western culture kind of despise native people of Taiwan that don't seem to have good or fashion state of beings on their faces. Because those native Taiwanese usually dress vulgar …

A few weeks ago, I began drinking soy milk and stopped drinking cow's milk. Unfortunately, I didn't drink all of the cow milk from the gallon before switching to soy. I left the milk gallon in a small fridge, which doesn't really work. I opened the fridge today and found that the milk had expired a week ago. Here's my question. What happened to the milk? It's all watery for 9/10 of it and the top 1/10 is white, probably the milk fat. The gallon has bulged out. Is that because it's giving off a gas? Most intriguing of all, why is the gallon a lot heavier now? A gallon once half full now weighs as much as two gallons. Shouldn't it be the same weight?

I remember this one game online but I can't remember what it's called. I think I first found out about it through SFN, but I can't remember that either. It's online. You are a person in a locked room and you can't remember anything. You escape through the room and do a lot of puzzles. It has about a dozen levels I think. You discover that you're a time traveler or something. There's one room with a lot of green tiles on the wall and you click the tiles. It's part of a puzzle. There are aliens on level 9 or so. What's it called?

As blike mentioned in the announcement, here's the discussion thread. Feel free to talk about anything related to WiSci, although I would prefer you put it on the Community Portal there. If you don't know what WiSci is, visit http://www.wisci.org.

Am I alone in noticing that ``The Trouble with Physics'' is still the book of the month? Is the ``book of the month'' intended to incite discussion, or is it something less academic? For one, I can't join the discussion (probably because of post count), and two, it seems that there is no real discussion there anyway because aparently either no one has read it or no one understands it. If this is the case, then why is it the ``book of the month''? Below is a copy of a private message I sent to blike with a comment for the thread (for some reason I can't participate). Despite the fact that this message was sent several weeks ago, and the link specifically re…

http://www.pocketissue.com/Default.asp?Page_ID=40 71% of Americans think global warming is a "natural occurrence", and 65% believe that scientists predictions are "far fetched" Contrast with the IPCC's assertions that they are more than 90% certain anthropogenic forcings dominate climate change. This reminds me a lot of the American public's view of the "evolution debate"

Do you think it’s possible to design a mechanical heart? Well, a pumps that is powered by heat that can eventually replace our heart’s function pumping blood around the body! The human body is really a process plant, so surely we can replace functions of our organs! The brain is the control unit so it will take time to reproduce something of that scale! Even internal organs such as kidney, liver and lungs are very complex in design! BUT, the heart is a very simple organ. So don’t you think a simple mechanical pump can do its job? What do you think? Say goodbye to heart disease?

Can Freewill be understood through logical deduction? If answers limit the possibilities, And questions are the divisions of answers, Then is understanding, The product of knowing the questions, That form the whole answer? So where would one begin, With a question like, What is Freewill? If the root prefers to express itself, Through it's branches? And the self prefers to express itself, Through it’s language? Then it seems that communication, Probably starts from a whole thing, And branches out through division. If perception is comparison of divisions, And the perspective of the self, Is a whole thing separate of the selves. Then …

It's very strange to witness so many people ranting and raving about how much they hate Paris Hilton, yet at the same time so many people are eager to know what she is up to. I am sure there are many people who both admit hating her and are curious about her at the same time. When I first heard about Paris Hilton it was from the sex tape scandal. I have seen the sex tapes myself. It's nothing special. I never watched the first episode of The Simple Life when it came out on TV. I went to watch with my brother the movie House of Wax, which had a Paris Hilton death scene. I am a car enthusiast. I first became interested in Paris after learning that she drove a Bentle…

I was listening to a radio show a few weeks ago, and they had a guest by the name of Sydney Ross Singer, who is a "medical anthropologist." He discussed many things about humanities current culture that could be making people sick. He mostly discussed how women's braziers have been linked to breast cancer, which I found interesting. But he mentioned something in passing about bottled water, which is that plastic bottles contribute hazardous materials ("carcinogens" was the word he used I believe). He said that he called the FDA, and they told him that the plastic is actually consdiered a food additive. This is his site: selfstudycenter.org. Then a few days ago, the sa…

Probably the majority of social animal species have no sexual inhibitions ( they do not wear cloths to start with ) at all since they make sex whenever they are ready for it and in any opportunity regardless if they are alone or surrounded by other members of the same species. So regarding to this matter, I have two questions ( Please try to support your argument with at least some scientific evidence ) : 1 ) Is there any current human culture whose members are totally un-inhibited in relation to sex so they do it indifferent if they are in public or not ? 2 ) Does sexual inhibition originate from religious and cultural indoctrination –or- is there some differ…
