At the top right of this webisite is a small version of your profile photo. Below that it says sign out, my settings and help. Strange thing is that photo that has always been the same as my profile picture has changed to a pony in a red setting. Nothing i ever saw before in life. This is ok with me. I would like to know if there is an explanation for this happening all of the sudden?

Hello, I see at the bottom left hand side of some (most) people's profile page: Latest Visitors I don't see that on my page. Is that a setting / option / view preference ... ... or am I being a bit thick somehow ? Advice appreciated ! Rich

! Moderator Note Moved from the C? thread http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/55253-c/ sometimes i feel like the people of this forum place slightly more emphasis on a quantitative understanding of physics. it would be nice if those who know physics could explain their laws in a more qualitative way thus making wacky sounding laws of physics more understandable by the average person.

[edit] I must apologize it is clearly stated in the rules [edit] Hi! I have been coming here for some time now and I must say I am still uncertain about whether or not I'm in the right place. I would like to start by saying of all the forums the physical organization of the forum is by far the most comforting place on the web for science related discussions. My suggestion here though is that maybe a statement of intent would help potential frequenters understand what it is they are attempting to become a part of. I often get mixed feelings about the place and although no direct comments have been made I have interpreted certain comments as possibly having meani…

  7. Personally, I make a lot of use of the "View new content" button. Unfortunately, that also means that I notice all the spam, which I always report. Wouldn't it be a good idea to ask new members to wait a small number of posts before they can include a link, or 24 hrs? Or both? In other words, would it be an idea to disallow linking to any external website in the 1st post? This would possibly prevent a lot of spam, both from the professional spam bots and from people who just want to promote their blogs and have no interest in a discussion. In my opinion, the large majority of new members have a question that they are capable of explaining without the use of link…

  8. I'll be the first to admit that I'm no forum expert, but I've seen a few threads lately starting with posts that, while they can be scientific in nature, are merely simple facts with no obvious point of discussion. I'll make up an example: The only rule they seem to violate is #8 (with my emphasis added) -- These threads seem to lack a specific purpose or direction for discussion. Do I have a legitimate concern, or am I just whining?

Just an aside, and because I was curious how this might come about - the dictionary which auto-spell checks our posts doesn't recognize ornery (bad-tempered, stubborn) nor orneriness but does recognize orneriness's (which I am not sure is a word at all). EDIT OK - Now I have noticed that the spell checker is across all sites so it must be specific to me, or to chrome

I was just wondering about evolution. Specifically how animals over millions of years of adapting to their enviroment, their bodies change to suit their needs. Would you say that that long term physical change starts out in one lifetime of a creature fundimentaly through brain training? eg, A man who trains and works for years in a repetative job, like, welding panels or digging holes etc.

I'm a new member, and one of my first actions was to check the help pages to see what BBcode was allowed. I was particularly interested to see whether I could post in LaTeX. I did eventually find the answer in a post, but I think it should be mentioned in the Posting section of the Help pages. That's the natural place to look for the information.

  14. Started by Genecks,

I'm tired of looking at the ethics of particular things, such as religion and marriage. Is there someway we could notify users to make things more science related? I mean, I would more than likely be cool with a religion thread that talked about transhumanism and if it's ethical for people to persuade others to transhumanism (and then the person made some argument about sociobiology and whether or not transhumanism serves a functional use in a person's life).... But people aren't really going on that level. The board is polluted and getting out of control again. How about "religion and so on -- in relation to science/medicine"?

Sometimes thread titles can be vague. Instead of having to click and then click the back button, wouldn't it be handy to get a thread-preview box when mousing over the title? Has this already been considered and dismissed for some reason?

I am now retired, but during my life I was, amongst other things, a Navy officer, a merchant marine officer, and a consular interpreter. I have therefore learned that time may be expressed in two different ways with, of course, the same meaning. We may define time using the 24-hour system or the 12-hour system. The 24-hour system which is what they use in the Army, in the Navy and so forth, the hours go from 00:00 to 24:00 (I am using the colon as you do here in this very attractive and very alluring site, I am referring to “Science Forums”). This way of expressing time implies that the first 12 hours go from midnight to 12 noon and the second 12 hours go from 12 noon t…

It's not Religion, Religion is Pseudo-Science. Pseudo-Science is Psychological observation. It's not Non-Religion, Non-Religion is Physical-Science. Physical-Science is Physical observation. It is Empirical observation. Empirical observation is just that. Empirical observation is SCIENCE. PSEUDO-SCIENCE (MIND) PHYSICAL-SCIENCE (BODY) SCIENCE (MIND AND BODY) There was absolutely no need to close the thread. You read the word God, you immediately classed it as Religion, forgetting to take into account the fact 99.9% was empirical observation of life. Is it in your best interests to suppress my given ability to measure God scientifically, reasonably and with m…

On this Forum, it is well known & openly declared that freedom of speech does not exist. Is it legal? I had a look at the wikipedia article about freedom of speech in which it is mentioned that: "The right to freedom of speech is recognized as a human right under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognized in international human rights law in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). The ICCPR recognizes the right to freedom of speech as "the right to hold opinions without interference. Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression."[1][2] Furthermore freedom of speech is recognized in European, inte…

  24. Hi! I am doing a poll about sexuality. http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/53912-poll-about-sexuality/page__pid__582004#entry582004 The problem is that the poll has a big mistake: there aren't two important choices (I forgot them). I've just created a new poll, but the topic is old and I can't modify the two links of the poll. What I need is a moderator who changes the first link with this: http://www.polljunkie.com/bA3WQk/Poll9973.aspx And the second one with this: http://www.polljunkie.com/4GqAYr/View9973.aspx Thanks!

In a thread a poster committed what I think is an ad hominem attack. I don't generally report them but I do think it is useful to point them out to show that the poster's argument is weak. Recently a moderator added a note that pointing these out in the thread also constitutes an ad hom attack. While it may well discredit the poster, and in that sense may meet the definition of an ad Hominem, I suggest the primary purpose of pointing out the logical fallacy is to demonstrate that the argument is weak. I think for consistency, pointing out any logical fallacy would have to be considered an ad hominem attack by the moderators description. Are the only remedies really t…
