hi i was reading some ways to protect my notebook from being stolen. i found this software called lo-jack for laptop. once installed it can be used to track back the laptop if stolen. there are three ways it's tacked: ip-address, phone number *if dialup connection*, and a third way that's not shared with the public according to the menufacturer, the software can survive a format of the harddrive and a fresh windows reinstall. my question is how does it do that:confused: i thought windows reinstall would get rid of everything on the pc. i'd just like to know how this software works if someone can help me understand it better. here's the forbes review for the softw…

There is a site that claims it can add or remove objects or people from a photo. They have a sample at http://www.pixsharp.com/en-us/dept_50.html where they removed several people from a group photo. I've removed some objects from photos myself, but I do not see how this sample can be real. Look at the top left of the "before" photo, and you will see that a man is completely blocking the arm of the person standing beside him. In the "after" photo, the person's arm is fully visible. How is this possible if the arm wasn't in the original picture? I don't see how they could have made the "after" photo from the "before" photo. It appears that they might have orig…

As a function for controlling threading or tasking, do you think such would work? Basically you would derive threads, or tasks, which could encapsulate all the information you want, such as a thread or task to conduct a certain type of accounting. Then separate to this you could develop say a body of data, that contains variables, such as for the accounting thread a variable that encapsulates how much tax money for a certain object in the world. I know I am skipping a lot but I am just trying to get it up and running visually. Then you could have another function, which sort of acts like matrix algebra in which threads could be called into, and that could be a sort of m…

Hey, I was wondering if anyone can help me. At college the I.T. guys have blocked myspace, youtube and other site like them. To get on them we use proxy browsers but they don't work that well because we can't watch videos on youtube and can't listen to songs on myspace, does anyone know why this is and how can we get around it? I don't know much about computers but assume its something to do with flash or plug-ins.

Does anyone know the most effective way to prevent anybody from hacking into your computer? My emails and probably my computer was hacked into, and on Symantic Anti-Virus I had to delete a trojan that was on my computer. I changed my email, and the password for this account just in case. Does anyone know how to prevent it in the first place?

I think that either Java, or JSP, or whatever version of html we are on, or some large scale internet language or infrastructure should allow commands to exist that can give and individual website the ability to have multiple addresses, or sub addresses if I may. What I mean is this, say you have a paragraph, one of a hundred in a certain page, or any such example, it would be nice if that particular piece had its own address. Now the address system could be made even better, such as having password functions, compression functions, etc... It could even be used along with say meta content to refine searches online, I really think it could be of use. I am no longer re…

i have a new hard drive, and its sata, which would allow me to remove my adaptec ata expansion card, hopefully improving my systems performance. the problem is, i lost my windows xp professional CD and all of the documentation and microsoft will not replace it without a reciept or some similar proof of purchase. what im currently thinking about doing is creating an image of my current hard drives, partitioning the new harddrive in to two partitions of similar size to the old ones, and just loading the images into the new partitions. im curious if windows will be able to handle that without all sorts of horrible problems. will windows run on a sata harddrive af…

My wireless card on my PC was working great for a while, but for about a month it's been getting a "low" connection and it periodically cuts out altogether. I've updated the drivers, no difference. It has the same responce when I boot into Ubuntu, so I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the environment. What could be messing up my connection? What can I do to optimize a wireless connection?

Sure we've (probably) all heard of BASIC, C/C++, Java, Perl, PHP, and Fortran (this is a science forum after all!), and to a lesser extent I'm sure many have heard of Lisp, Python, Smalltalk, and possibly Ruby (yay!) So, this thread isn't about those languages. What languages have you been dabbling in which are yet to gain mass appeal? Here's my list: Erlang - Originally designed to solve the problems of fault tolerant, highly interconnected telephone communication systems, it draws upon a bizarre lineage which includes history of obscure languages targeted at parallel systems, like the Transputer's Occam. Erlang operates utilizing lightweight processes whic…

  16. Hey guys, I'm currently building a terrain editor for a mmorpg. The program will allow me and my dev team to modify the height maps, textures, and splats in realtime. I've mentioned Palm Pilot creator Jeff Hawkins and his most excellent book On Intelligence several times before. While writing a book about a comprehensive theory of how the brain works that wins the critical acclaim of neurophysiologists is an astounding enough task by itself, Jeff has since founded a startup company, Numenta, dedicated to implementing his model of how the brain works, which he calls the Memory-Prediction Framework. The result is a computer program known as Hierarchical Temporal Memory. Wired recently wrote an article on Hawkins' startup, noting that it has no sales force: interested customers are already lined up at his doorstep. http://www.wired…

From the custompc fan forums section on folding From the stanford folding site The good thing about folding is, you can help medical research, just by keeping your pc on, simple really. If you want to help out, you can download the client up at the top. To learn how to set up your folding client, go Here. You do not have to join the custompc team, but can just stay non-alligned. Thanks, oh by the way, my folding username is Corillian

I was wondering if there is an easy way to check if RAF exist like with sequential files with the .exists() method. I checked in the Java Sun website and apparently there isn't so the only thing that occured to me was to get the file pointer (getFilePointer()) and if it is null then the file doesn't exist. Any suggestions?

I want to make a cabinet in which to grow orchids, and need a control system for lighting, temperature and humidity. I have an old laptop and a basic understanding of coding and control system theory. I'm handy with a soldering gun, and if I can find a circuit diagram I'm sure I'd be able to fabricate a humidistat. I could physically connect a t-couple and such to a port, but I have absolutely no idea how to get the controller to look at the port so it can process the signals. Can anyone recommend a resource that explains how one goes about all of this? I'm sure that it would be easier to buy a system from someone, but I'm strapped for cash and if I can learn th…
