I haven't paid for the internet since I moved to my current apartment, since at any given time there are several dozen visible wifi networks, of which two or three are generally unprotected. However, recently, the most reliable of these (good old linksys) has disappeared. Maybe its owner moved away, I don't know. Anyway, my home internet is very spotty now, and I often can't get a signal at all. I need ideas, either home remedies or buyable gadgets, to boost my reception. Personal experience is preferable, ridiculous suggestions are acceptable.

Concurrency is perhaps the foremost issue today's programmers must learn to cope with. CPU designers have exhausted the level of optimization they can provide to programmers working with a single thread of execution, and more modern designs take transistors which would've ordinarily gone to improve sequential performance and have instead thrown it at more cores. Intel demoed a CPU with 80 cores, yet one third of the transistors seen in a Core 2 Duo. This is the future of processors: more cores that do less. CPU designers are going to devote fewer transistors to each individual core while trying to pack more and more cores onto a single chip. Some crazy people are predicti…

Is anyone able to pull up hackerslab.org? (For those who are unaware: it's a site designed to be ethically hacked, created by a retired police officer to busy curious minds--and a redesign of the home page is encouraged when you complete the final level!) I can't figure out why I can't pull up the site. Does it still exist?

Microsoft has released Seadragon for the iPhone. Seadragon is the core technology behind Microsoft's Photosynth application, which allows users to construct clouds of imagery and other data and then navigate them much like Google Maps. The iPhone app basically applies the same concept in a mobile environment, leveraging the multitouch screen. There's a video here showing it in action: http://livelabs.com/blog/seadragon-goes-mobile/ It's an interesting idea, and it's also making waves in the Microsoft community because it's an awkward acknowledgment that the Windows Mobile OS isn't up to this sort of thing.

So, Google's making a web browser. They took the Webkit rendering engine (often touted as the fastest around, and by far the simplest given its standards support) and built a multiprocess browser, such that every tab is contained within its own process. And they wrote their own JavaScript virtual machine (called J8) to boot. Sounds pretty spiffy...

Hello all, I need someone that can help me create a relatively simple web based application to demonstrate a certain science concept. In general, the app should present a physical situation (like oscillation, for example) and adjust the movements according to preset formulas. I will provide all formulas, I just need someone who knows how to apply this to a fully functional web app. I can't pay, but I you *WILL* recieve full credit on the site this will be presented on. We can sort details in private conversation. Contact me as a reply here, or by pvtmsg. PLEASE -- only only only if you know what you're doing. I know what I want, and I know it's not ha…

There appears to be a clear problem with these proofs. A halting machine attempting to operate upon itself would cease it's normal function and simply always loop. A function which gives 0 if the input function is defined would cease it's normal function and always loop if operated upon itself. The simple reasoning for this is either of these actions would cause an infinite regress whereas normally an infinite regress of this type would not occur... So these two functions could work fine on everything else, but then if they were operated on themselves they would not work. Every Halting problem undecidability proof asks us to assume that such functions …

You guys are some wacky smart people, what technical certifications have you accumulated over the years? My workplace encourages (and almost demands) that you constantly study for and get certified for different things, and will even pay for most! But I stopped going for those things years ago - if you have any secrets to studying, let me know! There's a trainer at my workplace with a good 16 or 17, what a jerk!

http://www.download.com/8301-2007_4-10042127-12.html Should be interesting to see how this plays out. The guy wrote an app for the iPhone that does podcasting better than Apple's app. So Apple is denying him the right to distribute it to iPhone owners. That fact alone should send chills up the spine of any programmer, but it gets better. Apparently the guy's distributing the app anyway, through some sort of back channel, asking for PayPal donations. But Apple has the ability to disable applications on people's iPhones remotely, so people are saying Apple will simply turn the guy off. Wow. If Microsoft did something like that the entire world would be in…

Hey guys, I remember I had a webcam software that could double-up as a "surveillance" software. Essentially, it reacted to changes in the picture so if you hooked your cam to look at your room while you were out, it would idle harmlessly until someone opened the door, or turned on the lights, or just walked around, and then it would take rapid-succession pictures (you could define how many in a certain period of time) and could either upload to FTP or send you an email alerting you that there was a change. I don't remember where I got this software from, all I remember is that it was a webcam software and that it was free, or at least that most features of it were…

Don't know whether anyones familar with rate monotonic and scheduling of real time systems, but here it goes: Task A (Period = 10 msec, CPU time = 2 msec) Task B (100, 6) Task C (250, 11) Task D (500, 5) Task E (250, 15) Task F (100, 6) Task G (500, 5) Task H (1000, 20) Task I (2000, 15) Question: During the actual operation of the system the driver may press the brake pedal at most 4 times per second. Pressing the pedal turns the system off. This process requires a worst case of 35 msec of cpu time and must respond within 90msec. Explain how you would incorporate this process into the above model. IS THIS A MATTER OF:- THE 4 TIMES PER SECOND IS THE PE…
