From what I understand, when a computer powers up, the instruction register (IR) is loaded with a predefined location, which contains the bootstrap loader. Its job is to load the OS kernel and transfer control to it. 1) Why is this a two-step process? Why isn't it possible to load the address of the OS into the IR directly? 2) In various articles I found, it is mentioned that the bootstrap loader fits in a single disk block. Why is this significant? Thanks in advance.

How close technologically are we to the point where computers are fast enough that vector will be the default and most natural choice for all image formats of a typical size (2048 × 1536), including photographs and 3-D?

I'm curious if this general approach would be viable for UDP management: Overview of current technology: Long story short, it's pretty easy to open TCP connections (such as HTTP for web viewing) and have routers automatically ensure each system behind it can send and then receive data all properly addressed. All this is pretty much automatically handled between the browser, client systems, router, firewall, and the ultimate destination server without causing problems very often at all. Being able to have multiple clients send UDP data through a router to a server is a configuration nightmare most of the time: they don't operate in streams, so they don't main…

Hi all! I am studying Master of Computer Science. I am interesting in Astronomy and want to study about Astronomy. I don't know if there is any topics which combine Computer Science and Astronomy. My major is Machine Learning, Data Mining, Rough Set Theory... I hope I can find out a suitable topic which relates to Astronomy and make it become a good thesis in Computer Science. Please help me.

Hi everyone I've had this project on controlling the light intensity with a microcontroller, using phase control. I've build the zero-cross detector and the circuitry to interface with the light via an optocoupler (MOC3023) and a triac (BT138), but I'm a little stuck on the software. I'm using an on-board potentiometer to control the intensity and a 12bit ADC to get the digital value, but I think I can easily complete by having an 8bit value. So my point of concern is how do I change this 12bit value into an 8bit one? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated TDS

I am trying to conceptualize the notion of polynomial time. Can someone please tell me, in not-so-formal terms, what it means for something to be bounded by a polynomial? Any help will be much appreciated.

In the old conventional wisdom : Power is free , transistors expensive in the new conventional wisdom : transistors are free , power is expensive . My question is why this shift from expensive transistors to in-expensive or free transistors and the same shift to power too ?

Hi. I was just wondering about something. There's a lot of schematics out there for homebrew 8 bit computers, and these show the ROM and the RAM connected directly to the address and data buses. If the physical addresses in the ROM start from 0000, and the physical addresses in the RAM also start from 0000, how are conflicts avoided? How does the CPU or MMU split up the address space? Thanks in advance.

I'm 27 years old. I graduated with a physics degree about 5 years ago, but now I'm interested in a career in computer science. Specifically, I'm most interested in researching artificial intelligence and/or computer vision. I don't have any computer science classes in college or industry experience, so I'm starting basically from scratch, outside of general computer savvy. What's a good path for a person in my position to take? Living in the "real world" means that I have to worry about bills and getting old, two things that don't get along well with going back to college. But at the same time, even if I could get into a good master's program (which, maybe I couldn't)…

Hi all. I am self studying computer science as a hobby. I am completely self taught, and as a result of this, there are gaping holes in my knowledge. I wondered if anybody could tell me how it is that addresses are assigned to hardware devices. If you have a PCI bus, I guess the computer could connect to each device and assign it hardware addresses, but how would the computer communicate with these devices in order to assign it a hardware address in the first place? I wondered if perhaps there was a unique address given to each piece of hardware when it is manufactured (much in the same was as network devices have a unique MAC address). Thanks in advance to anybody …

I want to start working on an opensource project to break up the monotony of school. I'm thinking of an OS that uses voice commands to interact with the user. If I tell windows 7 I want to play a game and some music and while you're at it show me the latest sports news windows just stares at you blankly. What kind of shit is that? I'm hoping there's enough knowledgeable people on this forum to lay the groundwork for this project. I'd like my OS to say back to me "Which game would you like to play? Music coming right up and I'll read off the latest news as soon as you're ready." Basically this would start from the ground up or at the very least built off a basic v…

Does anybody know of the best way to go about learning to create websites? I'm currently a full time student with some mediocre programming background, I'd like to get into website design to make some money while I'm going to school. I have plenty of experience on the business end of it, but I've never created my own website, don't know anything about server hosting, domain name registrations, etc. I suspect creating some templates would be first priority, build a portfolio that I can build websites from per request of the customer.

There are situations when huge amount of people has to jointly work on extremely important documents. For example HTML standards where a few large players like web browser producers discuss between each other and potentially millions of web designers around the world ... or thousands of politicians/lobbyist while working on compromises of legislations on scale of e.g. USA/EU/world. How such looking impossible tasks are conducted? Do they use some kind of e.g. TortoiseSVN? Are they transparent enough for interested sides? I don’t even want to imagine how it is made in politics, but for standards there are for example mailing lists, so to e.g. get to information you ar…

Programming can be different, you can write drivers or you can create websites, or games etc. But, I would like to collect tips that could be used by any programmers from different areas of programming, some universal tips. Two most important things that programmers should know is english and math ( elementary, at least ). Also I know that if you want to write a really good program you should design it well. Can you give some good books about programs design? And of course you need a lot of practice to become a professional. "An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes, wich can be made, in a very narrow field." © Niels Bohr. Thats all I know. E…

I'm researching this area as a side project, maybe wire up a room or two as an experiment. Major networking involved, I'm trying to try to recreate a rudimentary version of Ironman's Jarvis or Caprica's Serge. Anybody have an information or reference material?

Hi, i'm a newbie in machine learning looking for the best way to perform prediction for my biological data. am thinking of using ensemble methods like Random Forest. My issue is, can i ensemble Random Forest with other single classifier such as bayesian network or K-Nearest neighbor? If so, what is the best tool for this. Thanks

Junior at UT Austin, majoring in Computer Science, I plan to continue on for my PhD I sit around day dreaming a LOT. I have a decent social life, but all I can think about is science, economics, business, etc. I want to turn my ideas into reality, develop neural interface devices, artificial intelligence, turn them into a prospering business, design smart houses, build myself a multi-million dollar waterside mansion, rub elbows with powerful politicians, attempt to prevent the degradation of scientific advancement in the US, get grants to build Utopian science communities. All the ambition you could imagine with no vent. I'm learning the basics at a painfully slow…

If you don't know what GoogleGoggles is, it's this thing where you can take a picture on your phone and it will translate text from the photo for you. How hard would it be to add a font recognizer/emulator and a photoshop-ish thing so that there is an app that puts the translated text back in the context of the photo? I feel as though it wouldn't be terribly more difficult for languages that use very similar alphabets such as translating between English and Spanish or between Arabic and Farsi.
