This info. was give to me and I am wondering if it is correct. Can someone who knows alot on the mitral valve please review it and get back to me with any comments. Thanks. Juliegkjones@hotmail.com Introduction The mitral valve ensures unidirectional blood flow through the left atrioventricular canal by preventing regurgitation of blood during ventricular systole. With this function in mind, we examined the physical changes with age in the mouse mitral valve. The mouse mitral valve apparatus consists of, anterior and posterior papillary muscles, chordae tendinae and anterior and posterior leaflets. The papillary muscles arise from the ventricular wall near the a…

Specifically, human meat! It's made of exactly the same stuff we are, so it seems like it should have all the nutrients we need, in pretty much the right proportions. Why am I wrong? Am I wrong?

Stupid question: What's the ultimate difference between a mammalian molar and premolar? I can tell the difference between them in a given skull, the premolars are usually smaller and simpler (with exceptions of course), but are there any universal diagnostic features?

The UC Davis NeuroMab facility (http://www.neuromab.org) has been established by NINDS and NIMH to generate and distribute high-quality validated mouse monoclonal antibodies against neuromolecular targets (NeuroMabs) to neuroscientists on a non-profit basis. NeuroMabs are excellent reagents for protein localization studies in adult, developing and pathological brain; biochemical analyses of subunit composition and post-translational modifications of native brain proteins; and proteomic analyses of endogenous brain protein networks. As of July 2005, the NeuroMab facility has 5 years of funding to make NeuroMabs for 250-500 neuronal proteins. In collaboration with Antib…

Are there centers in the brain for our perception or "feel" for left and right? I ask because I remember learning in school that there are but my current text book mentions nothing of this. I've also heard of people neglecting certain sides of the world, like one case in which the person would not eat the left half of his plate, wouldn't colm the left half of his hair, wouldn't fully put on his shirt on the left side, etc. I've also heard of an autistic girl who would avoid facing north. The care giver would spin around with her in a circle, and evertime she faced north, she'd duck her head. Of course, this is not left and right, but north, east, west and south. S…

Hello, I am looking for a graph to help me understand the functioning of the human brain. Particulary, I am looking for a graph (most likely adirected) that maps gyri to sucli. Under the assumption that the folds in the brain are interfaces by which different structures in the brain communicate with each other, I hope to use this graph along with a 3D model of the brain to study the form and function of the brain. Does anyone know where I can find this information? Furthermore, can anyone recommend a good reference book or website that clearly conveys the 3D structure of the brain, along with listing the functionality of each structure?

Hi everyone! How does memory actually work, on thinking about this I cna make no sence at all The brain is, by definition anyway, a large conenction of interlinking neurons who fire in a certain pattern to make a certain thought or process a bit of information - thats fine I get that. Memory is where everyhting goes nuts for me - memory is the connection between two or more neurons, how does that actually work? How can your brain know that set of conections there means x and that there means y. Its really very interesting and facinating all at the same time. Also how does your brain know where these memories are located and where are they located, are they lo…

I have seen similiar posts about sleep, but none specifically addressing the following questions: How badly does a lack of sleep damage or kill brain cells? Also how in the long term, if you are sleeping for an insufficient number of hours(like 4-6), how long would this take to affect the brain in a serious way? I've found it really hard getting enough sleep recently, so I'd guess I'm just having premature worries about this.

For some reason, for the past few days my eye has been irritated. In the corner of my left eye (the corner towards my ear, not my nose), underneath the top eyelid, I feel a shot of pain whenever I blink. I tried to look under the lid, and I can see no physical obstruction that could cause such a pain. Is it possible that I bruised either the eye ball or eye lid, which would cause the pain? I'm not freaking out yet, but it's been several days and the pain hasn't really abated much, so I'm beginning to get concered. I'm worried about an infection or some sort of sty. Thanks.

I work out for a couple of months, then stop for a couple of months, then start up again. When I start it up, I usually have to go easy for the first couple of days in order to prevent a horrible muscle spams/cramp/contraction/tight twitching in my biceps while im in the middle of lifting something. After a couple of days the problem goes away and I'm free to max out on anything without getting any. Now my serious problem is muscle spasms I'll get in my left calf. It's happened dozens of times in the last 2 or so years. On sunday I was waking up and I stretched my entire body which means I had my toes pointing downward and my calf flexing. Well, that's when my muscle …

I just happened across this website, and figured I should post it here for interest. As fair warning, if you are squeamish or have trouble with human cadavers or dissecting them, don't watch. http://www.anatomy.wisc.edu/courses/gross/ Personally, I found it fascinating, and it gives a much better look than in textbooks, since you can see how everything is interconnected. 3 years ago I got pitting edema (pitting oedema) on my left foot. This is a swelling caused by the buildup of lymph fluid. I had not had surgery, or heart failure, so the only possible cause of this, that I can find, is DVT deep vein thrombosis. But I have not been on any long haul flights. So could I have got it by sitting for hours on a chair surfing the net (scienceforums of course). The problem is that this edema swelling makes the foot vulnerable to bacterial infection, and this put me in hospital for a week last week.

Hello relating to persons ablility for altruism, freely giving without expections of reciprocation, and brain structure http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6278907.stm Will have to see more of the full paper to tell if its simply structure, how the structure processes, or a combination of both. Question is: As we map out more of the brain and it's functions, and possibly determine how to direct developement, what possible benefits and possible abises could arise? Mr D

Last night I was in a car accident and was thrown up and back down into my seat very quickly, as such the bottom of my back really hurt. It doesn't hurt so much now but the pain isn't going away as quickly as I'd like it to. If it doesn't go away soon should I assume that it'll go away eventually or should I get a doctors opinion?

Hey all, I was wondering for anyone in here that's studied medicine, do med schools actually use the book Gray's Anatomy by Henry Gray?? I was thinking of buying a copy because someone (who does not have med school expierience) told me that is what students read in med school. But when I read that it was written by Henry Gray in 1918, I thought, do they still use that book? And if they do use it, is it the same 1918 copy or a new copy (what is the newest copy?)? Thanks

At work, I typically receive a bunch of these links to WebMD and stories about what is going on in the world of clinical research. This article today really caught my eye, probably because I myself am a Type I (Insulin-Dependent) Diabetic. It has long been believed that Type I Diabetes was an auto-immune malfunction where the body's immune system mistakingly saw Islet Cells as foreign substances and as a result destroyed them. This recent research being done on mice in Canada, however, may bring research in a new direction. Apparently, they found that a specific neurotransmitter was "different" in mice which had Type I Diabetes as compared to those without Diabe…

I am trying to find a diagram which shows the distribution of sensors in the human thumb, analogous to diagrams of the tongue which map the position of sweet, salt and sour sensors, but which shows the distribution of sensors in the thumb, e.g. touch sensors (Meissner's, Merkel's, Ruffini's & Pancian), temperature sensors (hot & cold), and pain sensors (fast & slow nociceptors). If anyone knows where I can find this diagram of thumb neuroanatomy on the web could they please post the details here and/or send me a personal message with a link to this information. Thank you.

I get brain glitches every now and then and I'm wondering how many other people get the same thing. What I mean by "brain glitch" is a temporary mixing up of information or memories. For example, the other day, I went out to get "An Inconvenient Truth". They didn't have it in stock so I got "World Trade Centers" instead. I brought it home and my wife and I snuggled up to watch the movie. One of the previews was for "An Inconvenient Truth". I said "Now why would they advertize for a movie that we already got?" And my wife said "But we didn't get this." Then I remembered that we didn't get "An Inconvenient Truth" - I wanted to, but they were out. "Oh yeah" I said as…

Well I have a been diagnosed with a minor auto-immune disorder (runs in the family) and have been taking Prednisone for about a month. I've noticed that I'm much more on edge lately and I go off on people very quickly. This isn't normal as I usually let things that annoy me slide. My Mom has been on a pretty high dose of Prednisone in the past and my Dad has described her as being down right mean during the period. Family friends on the same drug have described the same experience. Anyone have any experience/advice here as I don't won't to piss off everyone I know. Believe me, I've done a pretty good job at being pissy over the last couple of weeks. Thanks…
