What lurks in YOUR water?

Featured Replies

They looked more active than algie to me. Probably nothing special, but its definately not dirt.

the pics in post #1, 15 and 20 look potentialy biological in form at a push, but also very DEAD! :))

"i read an article about prozac being found in tap water"

Can't remember where it was (probably US, surprise surprise), when a factory dumped some Prozac in a swamp area. The frogs then became addicted to it and acted all weird. :D Not that making innocent animals addicted to a drug is particularly funny, though. :<

All that Im wondering is...what exactly is this that Im looking at that waves back at me through the microscope?

Intresting find MolecularMan. Kind of off topic but I suggest you use http://imageshack.us for uploading your pictures. You could then post many of them with the tag! :)

Agreed! They couldnt be anything inanimate b/c of the arcadine orange. It showed DNA in each one. But it could possibly be an algae, I've never examined any algae under high power, I'll have to check it out.

where in the world were these samples taken?

Directly from the school water fountain, if you can believe it!

  • 2 weeks later...

what kind of microscope are you using??? what do you have them in when doing these pictures?? anyone got any agar recipes??

  • Author

With this I was using my nikon microphote with a 100x plan apo cromat objective. All of them were present in the water sample I took from school. The only other solution in the water was the DNA Dye.

No, Im afraid I dont have any agar recipies :) But I'll ask around

Thanks. Ive had some practice at this. I used to work with my dad in some hematology. It's really how I became interested in all of the microbiology stuffs :)

I still cant really find what exactly they are. I intend to seek the advice of Lida Mattman, but I wont see her for a while. Until then, can anyone find anything looking remotely like these specimines? Ive yet to find anything related. Thanks!

Thats..sick. Im not drinking tap water anymore :S

Also If you find out what it really is, please tell me - im curious.

lol. will do, but the thing is, I cant find anything at all! Im actually supprised on how elusive the critters seem to be.

I have no clue as to what these things are....

however, I'd not go spazzing out and not drinking tap water anymore. People have been drinking water for, how long now?

I've seen an alcoholic drink so much, he'd redrink his urine once he ran out. Whatever those lil boogers are I highly doubt will hurt you. I read once we have thousands upon thousands of microorganisms living just inside our mouths. Not to mention inside the rest of our body. You breath more of these micro-things with each breath. So I guess you need to quit breathing as well.

I understand the concern, but there is probably more nasties in mountain dew. It would be interesting to compare those samples to some bottle water. It is also pretty neat considering the objects in your photos could be mistaken for some astronomical object.

He isn't concerned about the safety of the sample, he is just curious about what the things are.

lol, thanks TinyBoy. He's right. Im not concerned, even tho I still dont drink the water :).

Im just curious as to what exactly is swimming down there. :D

Nice pictures I wonder if we have the same yuckies lurking in our school water. All those idiot's stuffing gum in there must have had an effect.

  • Author

lol. Yea Im sure the gum would just about ruin it, but you might take a look for yourself. I did it last year, at my old school, and found similar, but less shocking results

  • Author

in fact, im fairly sure i still have those slides somwhere. Maybe I could get those developed and processed into digitals. I'll get on that one whenever i have a free second.

They'll be processed ASAP. I've asked my dad to take care of that, so it shouldnt be more that 2 weeks. These are actually quite different from the ones I've posted, and might get different reaction. I hope you like them :)
