Hello all! I don't know if this is the right place for this tread...(if not the moderator can always move it to the right one!)

 

I created it as a place where we can suggest books of all sciences.

 

For example as I study European and International relations, I'm not familiar with any science but I really feel that I would like to get to know the basics of some (eg. Neuroscience, Phychiatry, Chemistry). Therefore I need some help in order to get to know them!

 

So where do I begin?

 

Is there any book that you would suggest to someone who is just starting her journey in sciences?

 

My suggestion would be the book "The selfish gene" by Richard Dawkins

 

Any others? (let's include all sciences)

Cosmos by Carl Sagan is an awesome read if you want a broad yet physics based look at the universe and its history (including many detailed discussions of chemistry and politics.)

"I suck blood" by BloodHound

Hyperspace by Michio Kaku and The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene for theoretical physics you can actually understand. Skip all the books written by Bloodhound, though. They're lewd, suggestive and totally incomprehensible.

Any of Serway's Physics for Scientists & Engineers textbook is great for novices and aspring Scientists/Engineers alike.

**So I'll do it anyways: Michael Moore's Stupid White Men is quite a good read atm.

Last year I had planned on reading the Oddessy but I was forced to read a book called The Giver. It was actually very good. The plot is based around a utopia in which the people are lacking something but they don't realize it.

I suggest it for those who find philosophy interesting.

The Artemis Fowl Novels!

We can suggest any books.. but also please include scientific books as well.

 

From litterature, I would suggest Der Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse.

i understand that Artemis fowl is not a science novel, but the author does his homework when it comes to thinking up all types of nuclear powered fairy technology

(just like to point out that there's heaps of these threads around, people might want to look at those first before suggesting new books).
