New Adhesive Device Could Let Humans Walk on Walls

Featured Replies

walking on walls isn't going to get done without one of those hydraulic exoskeletons, or at the very very least some ankle supports. thats a lot of torque your ankles would have to supply.

Hmmm, quite right.

I think the Japanese already have a fairly capable device for such a purpose..

Yes here it is:

I wonder if all this will be made available to the public smho in time?

As far as Im aware of, there is a chemical secreated on the bottom of a geco enableing it to walk up walls and certain types of ceilings

If that was the case geckos would have a hard time getting around. You are talking about the animal, right?

They have hairs and pads under their soles effectively increasing their surfaces (and thus surface-surface interactions) massively.

CharonY is right - gecko's have lots of tiny little hairs on the bottom of their feet and "stick" to the wall via van der Waals attraction

That's why this device is so interesting. It uses water tension as an adhesive..

Owell, they removed the video from your link.:-(

Presumably they are not proposing that the user walks at 90 degrees to the wall. I imagine this is only a speculative use of the technology, but it would clearly have to be implemented in some kind of climbing/crawling gait.

Well, i think the weight contribute in the ability for geco's to walk upside down.
