If you have extra belongings that you need to put somewhere, would you ask a friend, ask your parents, use a Commercial storage company, or just throw them out? I have heard storage companies are now being used extensively by the average household and businesses. Do you think this is a good idea? How safe is using a storage provider?

I stored my belongings for several months after I finished grad school and went home to live until I got a postdoc. Cheaper than moving it across country and back.

They were fenced in and my unit had a lock. And I wasn't storing anything that had a high resale value.

The industry doesn't seem to have commissioned any studies on safety that I can find. Personally, I use self-storage as a capitalism barometer. If I have to store stuff outside my home, I have too much stuff.
