  1. Yes. White "dominance" (lack of a better word) has only been recent. The Huns were the dominance in 1st to the 7th century.
  2. People forget that gunpowder came from China. As developed as the Europeans were, many civilizations (Chinese, Muslim, etc.) had impressive engineering, and medicine. However, I think Europeans ultimately prevailed due to three things: - Resources - Dense urban living (exchange of more ideas..China, India, and Middle East were more spread out due to hygiene concerns) - War (war advances technology much faster than interest in improving humanity). ~EE

  4. So the last 3 years I've had this really intricate design of a "waste-to-energy" generator set up that hasn't been done before. It's still a theoretical idea, so it's not a "proven" and "efficient" machine. I'm lost on where to go with my next step: 1.) Should I try and build a small model, and see if it works? If it does work, then what? 2.) Should I pitch it to "someone" in the energy business? A guy with alot of capital? An old professor friend? 3.) Should I write a whole thesis on it? Then present it? Would I be taken seriously? I'm very lost on the whole process, especially on a project as big as a WTE generator. If you really believe its far too big a project for one person to do, please let me know. My friend spent $7k-$9k on a landscaping invention that went no where. Now he sells insurance. ~EE

  6. As no one replied, I had to be a big boy and really dig for this answer. It turns out octane rating is proportional to activation energy. Hence 93 octane takes more energy to detonate in the cylinder (via higher compression ratio) than 87 octane. This higher activation energy correlates with the molecular stability of the molecule. So for example, toluene is more stable than butanol because of its benzene ring and the two alkyl groups that aid in stabilization. I also guess that methane is somehow more stable than toluene/ xylene because it has an octane rating of 120...not quite sure of that mechanism though. ~EE

  9. Cells repair damaged DNA, not damaged organelles. If a cell membrane is lysed or the mitochondria is severely damaged, that cell is dead.

  11. Yes, but why does isoproanol and propane have relatively close ratings to toluene and xylene? Should the latter be wayyyy higher in rating due to benzene ring stability? That was the crux of the question.
  12. I'm trying to figure out exactly how high octane gas works, and how it can remain stable under higher pressure in the cylinder. I assumed high octane gas (93+) has more benzene-like molecules in it to retain stability. So, I looked up a list of octane ratings of different fuels. At first I thought I was correct, because the two molecules with the second of thirds highest R+M/2 ratings were toluene (114) and xylene (116.5). I thought it makes sense because they were alkylbenzene molecules, so of course they'll have higher stability than a linear octane molecule and such. But then I saw that non-benzene molecules had fairly close octane ratings, like" isopropanol (118), propane (112), i-butane (102). And the most shocking was methane, with the highest octane rating of 120! So now I'm very confused. How do these molecules have higher stability/ higher octane rating if they're not benzene derivatives? (Correct me if I'm wrong on understanding the correlation of "higher molecular stability + higher compression ratio = more horsepower"...my thought is this: You use a fuel with a high stability, so that when it's sprayed into the cylinder it can withstand the high compression (i.e. 1:12), and then combust with the spark igniting the fuel... instead of a less stable fuel that will inherently combust due to the high compression, before the spark ignition) <---- am I right? ~EE

  14. I've been working in R&D for a diagnostics company for about 3 months now. Ive come to realize that having knowledge of statistics really helps the process of research. Can anyone suggest some sources where I can educate myself on statistics for laboratory research. Books, websites, youtube, experience etc. ~EE
  15. Everyone thank you so much for wise, and personal responses. I chose to ask this question here because I know some members here are a bit older, and have already dealt with married/in-law problems in their lives. I will humbly take your advice of growing my relationship with my future wife and support her with her decisions dealing with the family. I suppose i failed to see that the future is us, not them. I really needed a clear response to this, as 8 years of keeping quiet has drove me off the brink. Thank you all! ~EE

  17. I met my fiancee 2008, and we're getting married in October 2017. Each year since the first year I met her, I've become increasing resentful and flat out disgusted with her family. For starters, my fiancee is an artist, and is just beginning to make a business out of her work after 5 years of struggling. Her family pays no attention to her at all, and yet they praise their drop out son whose a drug dealer (for which they already know..hes been arrested twice) and "bought" a portion of a landscaping company, so now he's a "co-owner". They act as though he walks on water. They're racist bigots threatening to disown her older sister for dating a black man, and no offense to anyone who is Italian, but they're by the books Italian misogynist pigs. I honestly want to give them a snarling piece of my mind whenever I go over...which is strictly limited to holidays, and birthdays ONLY. However, alot of people have suggested that I hold my tongue and dont speak rudely against my future in-laws. She feels the same, but believes she has an obligation to still celebrate holidays with them. What do you suggest I do, because at this point I'm at complete odds... a.) Wait till we're married then tell them to screw off b.) Move away from them, never speak to them and let them soak in their racist, misogynist ways with each other c.) other...

  19. What permits the max power generation of a dc motor? Is it the max rpm's it can have? The length of copper wire in the motor? The strength of the magnet? ~EE
  20. From wikipedia: In the presence of atmospheric oxygen, metallic silver can form silver oxides, which have bactericidal properties. Even objects with a solid silver surface (spoons, etc.) have a bactericidal effect. Some my guess is, it doesnt offer some (small) sanitizing effect to the water...probably not in the same capacity as iodine, but at least something. ~EE
  21. I've heard of stories of settler is the American west, would drop a 1-2 ounce piece if silver in their drinking water to keep it "clean"..
