That doesn't make much sense. Energy is not necessarily connected with movement. And it isn't energy that is conserved, it is mass+energy. And, on the scale of the universe, it isn't clear that energy is conserved anyway. What does dialectical materialism have to say about that? But there is a much deeper significance to conservation laws generally. They are a consequence of particular symmetries. And it seems that symmetries underly pretty much everything in physics.
  2. Apparently, it's worse than that: "the whole contents had escaped except for one thing that lay at the bottom – usually translated as Hope, though it could also have the pessimistic meaning of "deceptive expectation".[4]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandora's_box Sorry. Back on topic now. I really hope you are not from the Southern States ... But you're welcome. (Thanks for prompting me to find how I could hide all that dreck as well.)
  3. The box is empty. There used to be little bit of Hope but it has run out now. I hadn't looked at trying to do this with the new forum. It is not as obvious as it used to be, but it is still there. Under the Activity tab at the top of the page (this is on the desktop view; haven't tried it in the mobile view) click on My Activity Streams and select Create New Stream. You can then select they types of things you want to see (content, unread, etc). Under Content Types select Topics. A little gear icon and down arrow appears next to it. Click on that and you can choose which subfora you want to see in the feed. Save this feed (give it a name first) and then you will see, by the name at the top, three little icons (Edit, Delete and Tick mark). The last sets this as the default feed and it will replace the default "Unread Items" at the top right of the page.
  4. OK. But did you hear about the agnostic, dyslexic, insomniac who lay awake all night wondering if there was a dog?
  5. The point of commenting is to explain what the code is doing at a higher level than the code can describe. And to explain why the code is implemented in a particular way. // We have to check the fuel level doesn't get too low or the pump could burn out if (fuel_level < MIN_FUEL_LEVEL) { ... ring alarm bell } Or // Note we use a bubble sort here: you may have been taught that this is the worst // possible type of sort, but it works really well on a parallel architecture like this ... sort routine And I suspect people who argue for minimal commenting haven't had to debug soon else's code!
  6. We have a whole thread about Stephen Hawking. He's quite a celebrity.
  7. Many other countries play those games and watch those same movies though. And produce their own. So I don't think that is a significant difference. But it might contribute to the willingness/acceptability (in some people's minds) of reaching for a gun as a solution to a problem. The difference is that, in most other countries, you can't reach for a gun.
  8. If we take "guns" to include more metaphorical weapons then I think there may be a sea change happening where the survivors are winning through their skilled use of rhetoric, social media and protest. "The pen is mightier than the sword". Although, in this case, it may be more a case of Twitter being more powerful than bribes lobbying.
  9. The US edition of The Guardian has invited students from the "Eagle Eye" news magazine at Marjory Stoneman Douglas School to guest edit the paper for the day: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/series/parkland-student-takeover
  10. As a result of the activism of the Parkland students there are now more than 840 marches taking place around the world tomorrow to call for better control of guns in the USA: https://marchforourlives.com It does look like this time it might be different... And in case anyone thinks the NRA might have got away with it if it weren't for those pesky kids... Veterans for Gun Reform: https://wepresent.wetransfer.com/story/veterans-for-gun-reform/
  11. One of the best jokes of all time. I don't think the problem is with adoption but treating people as objects. (But as others seem to have stooped even lower in the name of "comedy" maybe we should let that one go.) Ob. Joke: A woman walks into a bar and asks the barman for a Double Entendre. So he gives her one.

  13. Challenge accepted: Q: What does Itoero post on science forums? A: Belgian waffle.
  14. Italian. In the first one (not very good in any language): A: "E le fante?" (Sounds like "elephants" but means "and the Fantas?") In the second one: "Sono identici!" ("They are identical" sounds like "Sono i dentici" = "they are snappers") Obligatory joke, from Bob Monkhouse: "They laughed when I said I wanted to be comedian. Well ... they're not laughing now."
  15. Not in English. If you want jokes that don't work when translated... Q: What did Tarzan say when he saw there was only Coke in the fridge? A: "Elephants?" -- "These two forks are fish" "Why?" "They are identical !"
  16. I think that one lost something in translation.
  17. Sounds like your TV might be about as good as Italian.
  18. I was puzzled by this (thoughts of Stalin editing people out of photos) but then realised you want to see the edit history of posts, not change history!
  19. If you click on the dot or star before the title of the thread, it takes you to the first unread post in the thread. Alternatively, you can click on the timestamp under the title and summary (e.e. "23 minutes ago") and that will take you to the last post.

    B'dum Tish
  21. As far as I know, it only exists in spy fiction.
  22. And I have seen a video of someone being sawn in half. I don't know how he did it, but there is an obvious edit every time his hand appears in the video after he has put the mercury in the bowl.

Today I learned that HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points And that appears to be the "standard" American pronunciation. Whether it is the most common or not is a different question...

Today I learned that "piezo-" has many more pronunciations than I thought possible. (I had, of course, assumed there was only one: mine.) pie-zo pee-eh-zo pee-zo pee-at-zo pie-tso pee-eh-tso pee-tso pee-at-so and maybe more.
