  1. I believe there is some evidence that if you had a choice to make in the past and, following your choice all went well, next time you meet that choice you will want to repeat the course of events as exactly as possible. This feeling could be very strong if the past event was particularly important or risky. This could be the underlying reason for a lucky object or following some lucky routine. If it worked for you last time then it gives you a strong feeling that it should work for you next time.
  2. Perhaps my age will allow me to say this in a Grandfatherly way without it being misunderstood:- Although I obviously don't know you, I sense that any man who can forge a link with you on an emotional level will be very fortunate.
  3. I did read up a bit about dubstep - but it's not really to my taste. I guess musically I'm a dinosaur stuck in the'50's and'60's. Now you are making me feel old. I could embarrass my grandchildren just by going into a club or disco with them. As for taking my clothes off - better not go there!
  4. I just don't know why "copy" gives shortened URL's. I have no idea if it is a limitation of Chrome. Anyway thanks again for your help. Anyone out there know why my URLs have bits missing?
  5. And I was going to complement you on yours as you seem to like some 1960's music - but what's this Dubstep for goodness sake!
  6. Had it working a moment ago. Used edit to add some words of thanks and then Bang! Now I can add a new reply I may be ok - I'll give it a try Thanks for advice. I don't know why, but my "copy" omits some of the URL. Brownie point awarded!
  7. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=ZaSKICzeTaE Following all the advice given, but I still can't get a youtube video entered except as just the URL (as above). Help!
  8. Very, very sorry. I entered something in the wrong topic which I deleted. You cannot enter a completely empty post so what I meant was ignore the fact that I had entered nothing. Sorry again - I definitely did not mean ignore you or your topic.
  9. "Already working on"? Analogue computers have a longer history than digital computers. For example they were used for such tasks as gun laying in WWII. http://www.computerhistory.org/brochures/categories.php
  10. jre Could do with some more advice! Is the URL what appears in the address bar (e.g. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=ZaSKICzeTaE )? If not, where do I find it? Do I use the "fast reply" or the "Add reply button"? If I have pressed the "edit" button, will I have to wait until someone else posts so that what I am trying to do doesn't merge with what I have done before? Anything else I should know? Thanks Xittenn for trying to help a confused "old chap", your help is appreciated.
  11. No law against it - lol. Actually he isn't the main performer of the song - but the line "What would Jimmy Buffett do" is as well known as the song itself by Alan Jackson. If you google "What will Jimmy Buffett do" (including inverted commas) you will be taken there. You quite possibly have no idea who Alan Jackson is. Actually it's the only Country and Western song I like - because it reminds me of friday lunchtimes when I was working! This is one of my favourite love songs:- http://www.youtube.c...h?v=ZaSKICzeTaE Please anybody - how do I get Youtube videos on the post? I only know how to set links.
  12. Was it a Roman Catholic Church then?
  13. I think some of you very serious career minded people might like to wind down a bit! If you don't know already you will learn what Jimmy Buffett would do! http://www.metacafe....ial_music_vide/
  14. Although not done in practice another theoretical way would be to lessen the effect of the wind with some sort of shield. This could have holes of varying size and be as high as the turbine blades (to keep a balanced load on the blades). For maintenance purposes the holes could be completely closed and, as the structure would be high enough, a roof (possibly sliding) could be incorporated. I imagine a circular structure with diameter large enough to allow movement of the turbine as wind direction changes. Perhaps in light wind conditions the whole structure could sink into the ground. Absolutely a trip down "imagination lane" as I'm sure cost and practical considerations would rule it out! Still, perhaps a forum such as this should be the place to float ideas.
  15. In the early days of computers there were really only two types of memory known as volatile and non-volatile. We would call volatile RAM today and non-volatile ROM. The contents of the volatile memory would, of course be lost when the computer powered down. The ROM consisted of disk drives, tape drives and other devices such as punch card readers. These contained all the programs, including BIOS that the computer would need to run. The BIOS would most likely be held on a disc. The problem is that when the computer was switched on it would not "know" how to do anything, including loading the BIOS. The problem was usually solved by hardwiring a very small program which would do just enough to start loading from any connected peripheral device, probably starting with the BIOS. This small program was known as the bootstrap. People would describe the loading of individual programs as booting the programs - hence booting and bootstrapping were two different things. Now the introduction of firmware meant that things like the BIOS could be held ready for immediate use on power up and the bootstrap could take you there automatically. Now, when does bootstrapping end and booting begin? That is a debatable point. I personally think that as soon as the sequence of events can be changed by human intervention then bootstrapping has finished and booting has started. " a self-sustaining process that proceeds without external help. "
  16. If its any consolation I had never heard of connectomics until today!
  17. Because "black box" is the correct term. For example, the black box recorders in an aircraft are either orange or yellow with reflective sides! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_box
  18. I think this is a common misconception that has become common "understanding". Bootstrapping and Booting have generally become accepted as the same thing but strictly speaking they are not. For my opinion see #14
  19. I think you will find that these machines produce AC of varying voltage and frequency because of varying wind speed. this leads to the necessary steps AC (very variable) - DC - AC (very stable and locked in phase with the mains). The link seems to cover this:- http://ethesis.nitrk...yofDFIG_pdf.pdf Because conversion to DC is part of how it works (IMO) it wouldn't really matter whether the generator was single or three phase. However, I can see some advantage in starting with three phases and using each basically as a separate single phase supply. Each phase could then have its own inverter to provide for one phase of the mains. For "inverter" see link:- http://en.wikipedia....er_(electrical)
  20. I once met a girl 3 weeks before her 21st birthday. Money was short and I pondered whether to drop her immediately or use what money I had on a decent present. That was 53 years ago. If I had dropped her our two children, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren would never have been born.
  21. Mass and weight are not the same thing. For example, if two bodies of large mass collided in space and you were between them you would surely be squashed even though they are weightless.
  22. Fortunately I don't really feel like it, but at 74 people tell me I am in Old Age!
