  1. Which, for a large part of the time at least in my experience, is probably to lie! lol
  2. An important step in assessing a child's development is when they tell a lie which is to their advantage. A child that doesn't do that at around age 3 probably has development problems. It seems to me that someone who never lies but always tells the truth might find him/herself in difficulties at times. e.g. "Does my bum look big in this?". http://www.scholastic.com/resources/article/the-truth-about-lying
  3. Out of the mouths of babes. Just thought this was funny. One of my great granddaughters who is less than 3 years old was picking up some slang terms which my daughter (her grandma) didn't like. Grandma says "We don't say "aint it" and we don't say "eh?" do we?" Great granddaughter replied "Oh no Grandma and we don't say "piss off" do we?"

  4. 60 feet into the air? Realistic? About 10 times the high jump record? It is not always necessary to be absolutely realistic to use an extraordinary fictional character in a novel. For example "Spring-heeled Jack" as in the link:- http://en.wikipedia....ing-heeled_Jack
  5. I think progress within the human society has a lot to do with communication and recording what has been communicated. It allows speople to quickly benefit from the work of others and ensures that the death of a particular genius such as Einstein doesn't mean the loss of his knowledge. They say when an old man dies a library burns down. If that is so then what is of value in the man's brain should be recorded before his death.
  6. Thinking of symmetry caused me to have doubts about it. We have only 1 of certain organs and they are not always central. I knew someone who's whole internal structure was "back to front". For example his heart was more to the right than the left. It had no effect on his general health, but had to be well documented in case he needed an operation (it didn't help that he was in the armed forces). I think if something evolves and works it can exist even if it doesn't seem absolutely the most efficient "design". Two kidneys are supplied, but we can live with one, for example. If this is the case then why do we have two kidneys? Perhaps evolution hasn't got round to giving it a try?
  7. The actual material a transistor or microchip is made from costs almost nothing. However, development costs of a new device or chip is high. Once development costs have been recovered the chip can be sold for very little and still show a profit.
  8. And this amount spent went to two places. $25 to the hotel and $2 to the bell-boy.
  9. I know someone who has a book published as a Kindle e-book through Amazon. I believe, as long as Amazon will accept the book, it costs nothing. Try this link and the best of luck. https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/signin
  10. Sorry if I caused offence - I thought you were joking.

  13. What do you feel like doing by half past twelve on friday?

  14. It was probably hidden by the flying pink pig.
  15. I suppose the most available children are your own. However, I believe that sex with your own child is particularly abhorrent as it is contrary to the normal instinct of protecting your child from harm. Even with an adult child almost ready for marriage I think the normal instinct is to promote their development toward a happy independent relationship with someone who will make them feel fullfilled in life. I believe children generally do not view their parents as sexual beings. As one of my daughters said when somehow we touched on her feelings for her husband " Of course, I never thought about you that way, you were just Dad". As for me although she is nearly 50 years old she is still "my little girl".
  16. Not quite correct. If you lose the bootstrap you will not load the OS, but the OS doesn't need re-installing because it remains installed. It does need loading and to do that you need to repair the bootstrap.(IMO)
  17. There is something very wrong when you consider trials 3 and 4. The results suggest that under the same conditions concerning applied voltage you got two very different values of current. It's as if you took a reading, left the equipment connected, went back later and the current had changed significantly. Definitely not in accordance with Ohms law.
  18. Gosh - you seem to be asking big questions that probably nobody could answer (certainly not me). Why are we here? Are we evolving, and if so how shall we evolve? can we try or should we try to force things on another path through our own free will? I don't wish to sound dismissive but I believe most people accept we are here because we are here because we are here .............. I have often wondered myself just how much of what we do is instinctive and how much of what we do is free will. But I don't worry about it. If such worry is a problem to you perhaps you should talk it over with a doctor. NB, I have no medical knowledge - just my opinion.
  19. You seem to be worried about automatic reflexes that keep us "alive and ticking" and so be able to join in life without the need for such concerns. (IMO) It is both necessary and good that these reflexes take place. Things like breathing control that matches exertion: eating when hungry: drinking when thirsty: urinating when the bladder is full: excreting when the bowel is full: periodically thinking sex would be rather nice etc.. These things are common to everyone and because they are automatic I believe a healthy attitude should allow you to let the processes look after themselves whilst you concentrate on the very large part of life that you do have control over. If I simply found this impossible then I, personally, would seek medical advice.
  20. Some people are surprised when they hear that the moon and the sun appear, to a close approximation, the same size in the sky. Most people instinctively feel that the sun appears much larger. The fact that they appear the same size is what allows a full eclipse of the sun with the corona visible. The attachment is taken from the link:- http://en.wikipedia....ngular_diameter
  21. This one is better read aloud.(especially the last 7 words) The Lord of the Manor was soaking in his bath when he fancied a drink. He rang for his butler, called Wardle, and said " Fetch me a large scotch Wardle". Just as Wardle was mid way between the bath and the door the Lord of the Manor farted quite vigorously which erupted as a burst of bubbles coming to the surface of his bath water. Wardle hesitated for a moment before continuing on his errand. A few minutes later Wardle returned with a large scotch in one hand and a hot water bottle in the other. He offered these to the Lord who looked surprised and said "Why have you brought me a hot water bottle?" Wardle replied " My Lord, as I left I distinctly heard you say "And what about a water bottle Wardle?""
  22. Phi, perhaps I didn't make myself absolutely clear:- "I suppose at some level as human beings we are always learning," Also:- "You may not add a great deal to your store of knowledge, but what the heck!" Both of these statements should make clear that I feel everything in life is a learning process, but perhaps we shouldn't be over anxious about the learning. Enjoy life in as many forms as you can, don't worry too much about "the learning" in your everyday life - it will happen anyway! Obviously there are times, perhaps when following a course of study, when special efforts have to be made to learn. I'm reminded of the sentiment "We should work to live, not live to work".
  23. I'm sorry, but I find this rather sad. There is so much more to life than endlessly seeking knowledge. I'm a lot nearer my end than my beginning and I have no regrets about time "wasted" not seeking knowledge. Yes, even time playing "ping pong" as that time was shared with other people in sheer enjoyment of their company and the competition between us. I suppose at some level as human beings we are always learning, but that can come as secondary to what may be more a part of living at that time. Meet people, mix with them for the pleasure of their company. Find a sport that you can enjoy or travel - not to specifically add to your knowledge but for the enjoyment of new experiences, different food, other people. You may not add a great deal to your store of knowledge, but what the heck! When I die, as we all must, I'll be happy if my epitaph is simply "He certainly lived a life". I don't see it as important that I never learned that much.
  24. The self sustaining process without external help can be interpreted as meaning if the operator has to input anything, or has the choice to change anything, then you are no longer bootstrapping although what the operator is doing may commonly be called booting. (IMO) ??
